Seven Men Chosen to Serve

But as the believersa rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent. The Greek-speaking believers complained about the Hebrew-speaking believers, saying that their widows were being discriminated against in the daily distribution of food.

У тиї ж днї, як намножилось учеників, було наріканнє Єленян на Євреїв, що у щоденному служенню не дбають про вдовиць їх.

So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program.

Прикликавши ж дванайцять (апостоли) громаду учеників, рекли: Не личить нам, покинувши слово Боже, служити при столах.

And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility.

Вигледїть же, брати, сїм мужів із вас доброї слави, повних Духа сьвятого та мудрости, котрих поставимо на сю потріб.

Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word.”

Everyone liked this idea, and they chose the following: Stephen (a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit), Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas of Antioch (an earlier convert to the Jewish faith).

І вподобалось слово всїй громадї; і вибрали Стефана, чоловіка, повного віри і Духа сьвятого, та Филипа, та Прохора, та Никанора, та Тимона, та Пармена, та Миколая, нововірця з Антиохиї,

These seven were presented to the apostles, who prayed for them as they laid their hands on them.

котрих поставили перед апостолами, і помолившись положили вони руки на них.

So God’s message continued to spread. The number of believers greatly increased in Jerusalem, and many of the Jewish priests were converted, too.

І росло слово Боже, і намножувалось число учеників у Єрусалимі вельми, й велике множество сьвящеників покорилось вірі.

Stephen Is Arrested

Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed amazing miracles and signs among the people.

Стефан же, повний віри й сили, робив чудеса і ознаки великі між народом.

But one day some men from the Synagogue of Freed Slaves, as it was called, started to debate with him. They were Jews from Cyrene, Alexandria, Cilicia, and the province of Asia.

Устали ж деякі з школи, званої Либертинцїв, та Киринейцїв, та Александрийцїв і тих, що з Киликиї та Азиї, перепитуючись із Стефаном.

None of them could stand against the wisdom and the Spirit with which Stephen spoke.

І не здолїли встояти проти премудрости й духа, яким глаголав.

So they persuaded some men to lie about Stephen, saying, “We heard him blaspheme Moses, and even God.”

Тодї під'устили вони людей, щоб казали, що чули ми його, як він промовляв слова хульні на Мойсея і Бога.

This roused the people, the elders, and the teachers of religious law. So they arrested Stephen and brought him before the high council.b

І підбурили народ, і старшину, й письменників, і напавши схопили його, і привели в раду,

The lying witnesses said, “This man is always speaking against the holy Temple and against the law of Moses.

і поставили кривих сьвідків, що казали: Сей чоловік не перестає слова хульні говорити проти місця сього сьвятого і проти закону:

We have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazarethc will destroy the Temple and change the customs Moses handed down to us.”

чули бо ми, як він казав, що Ісус Назорей зруйнує місце се й перемінить, звичаї, котрі Мойсей передав нам.

At this point everyone in the high council stared at Stephen, because his face became as bright as an angel’s.

І дивлячись пильно на него всї, що сидїли в радї, видїли лице його як-би лице ангела.
