New Living Translation

Darby Bible Translation

  • Introduction

We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning,a whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life.
  • The Word of Life

    That which was from [the] beginning, that which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes; that which we contemplated, and our hands handled, concerning the word of life;
  • This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us.
  • (and the life has been manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and report to you the eternal life, which was with the Father, and has been manifested to us:)
  • We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
  • that which we have seen and heard we report to you, that *ye* also may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship [is] indeed with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
  • We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.b
  • And these things write we to you that your joy may be full.

  • Living in the Light

This is the message we heard from Jesusc and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all.
  • Walking in the Light

And this is the message which we have heard from him, and declare to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
  • So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth.
  • If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not practise the truth.
  • But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
  • But if we walk in the light as *he* is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.
  • If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.
  • If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
  • But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
  • If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us [our] sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
  • If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.
  • If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
