New Living Translation

New American Standard Bible

  • Ceremonially Clean and Unclean Animals

“Since you are the people of the LORD your God, never cut yourselves or shave the hair above your foreheads in mourning for the dead.
  • Clean and Unclean Animals

“You are the sons of the LORD your God; you shall not cut yourselves nor shave your forehead for the sake of the dead.
  • You have been set apart as holy to the LORD your God, and he has chosen you from all the nations of the earth to be his own special treasure.
  • “For you are a holy people to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.
  • “You must not eat any detestable animals that are ceremonially unclean.
  • “You shall not eat any detestable thing.
  • These are the animalsa you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,
  • “These are the animals which you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,
  • the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the addax, the antelope, and the mountain sheep.
  • the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep.
  • “You may eat any animal that has completely split hooves and chews the cud,
  • “Any animal that divides the hoof and has the hoof split in two and chews the cud, among the animals, that you may eat.
  • but if the animal doesn’t have both, it may not be eaten. So you may not eat the camel, the hare, or the hyrax.b They chew the cud but do not have split hooves, so they are ceremonially unclean for you.
  • “Nevertheless, you are not to eat of these among those which chew the cud, or among those that divide the hoof in two: the camel and the rabbit and the shaphan, for though they chew the cud, they do not divide the hoof; they are unclean for you.
  • And you may not eat the pig. It has split hooves but does not chew the cud, so it is ceremonially unclean for you. You may not eat the meat of these animals or even touch their carcasses.
  • “The pig, because it divides the hoof but does not chew the cud, it is unclean for you. You shall not eat any of their flesh nor touch their carcasses.
  • “Of all the marine animals, you may eat whatever has both fins and scales.
  • “These you may eat of all that are in water: anything that has fins and scales you may eat,
  • You may not, however, eat marine animals that do not have both fins and scales. They are ceremonially unclean for you.
  • but anything that does not have fins and scales you shall not eat; it is unclean for you.
  • “You may eat any bird that is ceremonially clean.
  • “You may eat any clean bird.
  • These are the birds you may not eat: the griffon vulture, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,
  • “But these are the ones which you shall not eat: the eagle and the vulture and the buzzard,
  • the kite, the falcon, buzzards of all kinds,
  • and the red kite, the falcon, and the kite in their kinds,
  • ravens of all kinds,
  • and every raven in its kind,
  • the eagle owl, the short-eared owl, the seagull, hawks of all kinds,
  • and the ostrich, the owl, the sea gull, and the hawk in their kinds,
  • the little owl, the great owl, the barn owl,
  • the little owl, the great owl, the white owl,
  • the desert owl, the Egyptian vulture, the cormorant,
  • the pelican, the carrion vulture, the cormorant,
  • the stork, herons of all kinds, the hoopoe, and the bat.
  • the stork, and the heron in their kinds, and the hoopoe and the bat.
  • “All winged insects that walk along the ground are ceremonially unclean for you and may not be eaten.
  • “And all the teeming life with wings are unclean to you; they shall not be eaten.
  • But you may eat any winged bird or insect that is ceremonially clean.
  • “You may eat any clean bird.
  • “You must not eat anything that has died a natural death. You may give it to a foreigner living in your town, or you may sell it to a stranger. But do not eat it yourselves, for you are set apart as holy to the LORD your God.
“You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.
  • “You shall not eat anything which dies of itself. You may give it to the alien who is in your town, so that he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner, for you are a holy people to the LORD your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.

  • The Giving of Tithes

“You must set aside a tithe of your crops — one-tenth of all the crops you harvest each year.
  • “You shall surely tithe all the produce from what you sow, which comes out of the field every year.
  • Bring this tithe to the designated place of worship — the place the LORD your God chooses for his name to be honored — and eat it there in his presence. This applies to your tithes of grain, new wine, olive oil, and the firstborn males of your flocks and herds. Doing this will teach you always to fear the LORD your God.
  • “You shall eat in the presence of the LORD your God, at the place where He chooses to establish His name, the tithe of your grain, your new wine, your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and your flock, so that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always.
  • “Now when the LORD your God blesses you with a good harvest, the place of worship he chooses for his name to be honored might be too far for you to bring the tithe.
  • “If the distance is so great for you that you are not able to bring the tithe, since the place where the LORD your God chooses to set His name is too far away from you when the LORD your God blesses you,
  • If so, you may sell the tithe portion of your crops and herds, put the money in a pouch, and go to the place the LORD your God has chosen.
  • then you shall exchange it for money, and bind the money in your hand and go to the place which the LORD your God chooses.
  • When you arrive, you may use the money to buy any kind of food you want — cattle, sheep, goats, wine, or other alcoholic drink. Then feast there in the presence of the LORD your God and celebrate with your household.
  • “You may spend the money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen, or sheep, or wine, or strong drink, or whatever your heart desires; and there you shall eat in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice, you and your household.
  • And do not neglect the Levites in your town, for they will receive no allotment of land among you.
  • “Also you shall not neglect the Levite who is in your town, for he has no portion or inheritance among you.
  • “At the end of every third year, bring the entire tithe of that year’s harvest and store it in the nearest town.
  • “At the end of every third year you shall bring out all the tithe of your produce in that year, and shall deposit it in your town.
  • Give it to the Levites, who will receive no allotment of land among you, as well as to the foreigners living among you, the orphans, and the widows in your towns, so they can eat and be satisfied. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all your work.
  • “The Levite, because he has no portion or inheritance among you, and the alien, the orphan and the widow who are in your town, shall come and eat and be satisfied, in order that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.
