New Living Translation
New King James Version
If its owner does not live nearby or you don’t know who the owner is, take it to your place and keep it until the owner comes looking for it. Then you must return it.
And if your brother is not near you, or if you do not know him, then you shall bring it to your own house, and it shall remain with you until your brother seeks it; then you shall restore it to him.
Do the same if you find your neighbor’s donkey, clothing, or anything else your neighbor loses. Don’t ignore your responsibility.
“If you see that your neighbor’s donkey or ox has collapsed on the road, do not look the other way. Go and help your neighbor get it back on its feet!
“You shall not see your brother’s donkey or his ox fall down along the road, and hide yourself from them; you shall surely help him lift them up again.
“A woman must not put on men’s clothing, and a man must not wear women’s clothing. Anyone who does this is detestable in the sight of the LORD your God.
“If you happen to find a bird’s nest in a tree or on the ground, and there are young ones or eggs in it with the mother sitting in the nest, do not take the mother with the young.
“If a bird’s nest happens to be before you along the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, with the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young;
You may take the young, but let the mother go, so that you may prosper and enjoy a long life.
you shall surely let the mother go, and take the young for yourself, that it may be well with you and that you may prolong your days.
“When you build a new house, you must build a railing around the edge of its flat roof. That way you will not be considered guilty of murder if someone falls from the roof.
“When you build a new house, then you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you may not bring guilt of bloodshed on your household if anyone falls from it.
“You must not plant any other crop between the rows of your vineyard. If you do, you are forbidden to use either the grapes from the vineyard or the other crop.
“You shall not sow your vineyard with different kinds of seed, lest the yield of the seed which you have sown and the fruit of your vineyard be defiled.
“You must not plow with an ox and a donkey harnessed together.
“You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together.
“You must not wear clothing made of wool and linen woven together.
“You shall not wear a garment of different sorts, such as wool and linen mixed together.
“You must put four tassels on the hem of the cloak with which you cover yourself — on the front, back, and sides.
“You shall make tassels on the four corners of the clothing with which you cover yourself.
Regulations for Sexual Purity
“Suppose a man marries a woman, but after sleeping with her, he turns against her
Laws of Sexual Morality
“If any man takes a wife, and goes in to her, and detests her,
“If any man takes a wife, and goes in to her, and detests her,
and publicly accuses her of shameful conduct, saying, ‘When I married this woman, I discovered she was not a virgin.’
and charges her with shameful conduct, and brings a bad name on her, and says, ‘I took this woman, and when I came to her I found she was not a virgin,’
Then the woman’s father and mother must bring the proof of her virginity to the elders as they hold court at the town gate.
then the father and mother of the young woman shall take and bring out the evidence of the young woman’s virginity to the elders of the city at the gate.
Her father must say to them, ‘I gave my daughter to this man to be his wife, and now he has turned against her.
And the young woman’s father shall say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man as wife, and he detests her.
He has accused her of shameful conduct, saying, “I discovered that your daughter was not a virgin.” But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.’ Then they must spread her bed sheet before the elders.
Now he has charged her with shameful conduct, saying, “I found your daughter was not a virgin,” and yet these are the evidences of my daughter’s virginity.’ And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city.
The elders must then take the man and punish him.
Then the elders of that city shall take that man and punish him;
and they shall fine him one hundred shekels of silver and give them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought a bad name on a virgin of Israel. And she shall be his wife; he cannot divorce her all his days.
“But suppose the man’s accusations are true, and he can show that she was not a virgin.
“But if the thing is true, and evidences of virginity are not found for the young woman,
The woman must be taken to the door of her father’s home, and there the men of the town must stone her to death, for she has committed a disgraceful crime in Israel by being promiscuous while living in her parents’ home. In this way, you will purge this evil from among you.
“If a man is discovered committing adultery, both he and the woman must die. In this way, you will purge Israel of such evil.
“If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then both of them shall die — the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so you shall put away the evil from Israel.
“Suppose a man meets a young woman, a virgin who is engaged to be married, and he has sexual intercourse with her. If this happens within a town,
“If a young woman who is a virgin is betrothed to a husband, and a man finds her in the city and lies with her,
you must take both of them to the gates of that town and stone them to death. The woman is guilty because she did not scream for help. The man must die because he violated another man’s wife. In this way, you will purge this evil from among you.
then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry out in the city, and the man because he humbled his neighbor’s wife; so you shall put away the evil from among you.
“But if the man meets the engaged woman out in the country, and he rapes her, then only the man must die.
“But if a man finds a betrothed young woman in the countryside, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die.
Do nothing to the young woman; she has committed no crime worthy of death. She is as innocent as a murder victim.
But you shall do nothing to the young woman; there is in the young woman no sin deserving of death, for just as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter.
Since the man raped her out in the country, it must be assumed that she screamed, but there was no one to rescue her.
For he found her in the countryside, and the betrothed young woman cried out, but there was no one to save her.
“Suppose a man has intercourse with a young woman who is a virgin but is not engaged to be married. If they are discovered,
“If a man finds a young woman who is a virgin, who is not betrothed, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are found out,
then the man who lay with her shall give to the young woman’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife because he has humbled her; he shall not be permitted to divorce her all his days.
