Darby Bible Translation
“Suppose two people take a dispute to court, and the judges declare that one is right and the other is wrong.
Laws of Fairness
If there be a controversy between men, and they resort to judgment, and they judge [their case]; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.
If there be a controversy between men, and they resort to judgment, and they judge [their case]; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.
If the person in the wrong is sentenced to be flogged, the judge must command him to lie down and be beaten in his presence with the number of lashes appropriate to the crime.
And it shall be if the wicked man have deserved to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and be beaten before his face, according to the measure of his wickedness with a certain number [of stripes].
But never give more than forty lashes; more than forty lashes would publicly humiliate your neighbor.
With forty [stripes] shall they beat him; they shall not exceed, lest, if they continue to beat him with many stripes above these, thy brother become despicable in thine eyes.
“You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain.
Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out [the corn].
“If two brothers are living together on the same property and one of them dies without a son, his widow may not be married to anyone from outside the family. Instead, her husband’s brother should marry her and have intercourse with her to fulfill the duties of a brother-in-law.
Widowhood and Marriage
If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no son, the wife of the dead shall not marry a stranger abroad: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him as wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother unto her.
If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no son, the wife of the dead shall not marry a stranger abroad: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him as wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother unto her.
The first son she bears to him will be considered the son of the dead brother, so that his name will not be forgotten in Israel.
And it shall be, that the firstborn that she beareth shall stand in the name of his brother who is dead, that his name be not blotted out from Israel.
“But if the man refuses to marry his brother’s widow, she must go to the town gate and say to the elders assembled there, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel — he refuses to fulfill the duties of a brother-in-law by marrying me.’
But if the man like not to take his brother's wife, his brother's wife shall go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband's brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel: he will not perform for me the duty of a husband's brother.
The elders of the town will then summon him and talk with him. If he still refuses and says, ‘I don’t want to marry her,’
Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak unto him; and if he stand to it and say, I like not to take her;
the widow must walk over to him in the presence of the elders, pull his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face. Then she must declare, ‘This is what happens to a man who refuses to provide his brother with children.’
then shall his brother's wife come near to him before the eyes of the elders, and draw his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto the man that will not build up his brother's house.
Ever afterward in Israel his family will be referred to as ‘the family of the man whose sandal was pulled off’!
And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe drawn off.
“If two Israelite men get into a fight and the wife of one tries to rescue her husband by grabbing the testicles of the other man,
When men fight together one with another, and the wife of the one come near to rescue her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and stretch out her hand, and seize him by his secret parts,
you must cut off her hand. Show her no pity.
thou shalt cut off her hand; thine eye shall not spare.
“You must use accurate scales when you weigh out merchandise,
Standard Weights and Measures
Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small.
Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small.
and you must use full and honest measures.
Thou shalt not have in thy house divers ephahs, a great and a small.
Yes, always use honest weights and measures, so that you may enjoy a long life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
A perfect and just weight shalt thou have; a perfect and just ephah shalt thou have; that thy days may be prolonged in the land that Jehovah thy God giveth thee.
All who cheat with dishonest weights and measures are detestable to the LORD your God.
For every one that doeth such things, every one that doeth unrighteousness, is an abomination to Jehovah thy God.
“Never forget what the Amalekites did to you as you came from Egypt.
Blot Out Amalek
Remember what Amalek did unto thee on the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt;
Remember what Amalek did unto thee on the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt;
They attacked you when you were exhausted and weary, and they struck down those who were straggling behind. They had no fear of God.
how he met thee on the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, all the feeble that lagged behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary, and he feared not God.
Therefore, when the LORD your God has given you rest from all your enemies in the land he is giving you as a special possession, you must destroy the Amalekites and erase their memory from under heaven. Never forget this!
And it shall be, when Jehovah thy God shall have given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land that Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens; thou shalt not forget it.
