Darby Bible Translation

  • The Altar on Mount Ebal

Then Moses and the leaders of Israel gave this charge to the people: “Obey all these commands that I am giving you today.
  • The Altar on Mount Ebal

And Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, Keep all the commandment which I command you this day.
  • When you cross the Jordan River and enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, set up some large stones and coat them with plaster.
  • And it shall be on the day when ye pass over the Jordan unto the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee, that thou shalt set thee up great stones, and plaster them with plaster:
  • Write this whole body of instruction on them when you cross the river to enter the land the LORD your God is giving you — a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you.
  • and thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law, when thou goest over that thou mayest enter into the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, as Jehovah the God of thy fathers hath promised thee.
  • When you cross the Jordan, set up these stones at Mount Ebal and coat them with plaster, as I am commanding you today.
  • And it shall be when ye go over the Jordan, that ye shall set up these stones, as I command you this day, on mount Ebal, and thou shalt plaster them with plaster.
  • “Then build an altar there to the LORD your God, using natural, uncut stones. You must not shape the stones with an iron tool.
  • And there shalt thou build an altar to Jehovah thy God, an altar of stones; thou shalt not lift up an iron [tool] upon them;
  • Build the altar of uncut stones, and use it to offer burnt offerings to the LORD your God.
  • of whole stones shalt thou build the altar of Jehovah thy God; and thou shalt offer up burnt-offerings thereon to Jehovah thy God.
  • Also sacrifice peace offerings on it, and celebrate by feasting there before the LORD your God.
  • And thou shalt sacrifice peace-offerings, and shalt eat there, and rejoice before Jehovah thy God.
  • You must clearly write all these instructions on the stones coated with plaster.”
  • And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law very plainly.
  • Then Moses and the Levitical priests addressed all Israel as follows: “O Israel, be quiet and listen! Today you have become the people of the LORD your God.
  • And Moses and the priests, the Levites, spoke to all Israel, saying, Be silent and hearken, Israel! this day thou art become the people of Jehovah thy God.
  • So you must obey the LORD your God by keeping all these commands and decrees that I am giving you today.”
  • And thou shalt hearken unto the voice of Jehovah thy God, and do his commandments and his statutes, which I command thee this day.

  • Curses from Mount Ebal

That same day Moses also gave this charge to the people:
  • Curses Pronounced from Ebal

And Moses gave commandment to the people the same day, saying,
  • “When you cross the Jordan River, the tribes of Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin must stand on Mount Gerizim to proclaim a blessing over the people.
  • These shall stand to bless the people upon mount Gerizim, when ye have gone over the Jordan: Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Joseph, and Benjamin.
  • And the tribes of Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali must stand on Mount Ebal to proclaim a curse.
  • And these shall stand upon mount Ebal to curse: Reuben, Gad, and Asher, and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
  • “Then the Levites will shout to all the people of Israel:
  • And the Levites shall declare and say unto all the men of Israel with a loud voice:
