Darby Bible Translation

  • Blessings for Obedience

“If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully keep all his commands that I am giving you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the world.
  • The Blessings of Obedience

    And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of Jehovah thy God, to take heed to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that Jehovah thy God will set thee supreme above all nations of the earth;
  • You will experience all these blessings if you obey the LORD your God:
  • and all these blessings shall come on thee and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of Jehovah thy God.
  • Your towns and your fields
    will be blessed.
  • Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.
  • Your children and your crops
    will be blessed.
The offspring of your herds and flocks
    will be blessed.
  • Blessed shall be the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the offspring of thy kine, and the increase of thy sheep.
  • Your fruit baskets and breadboards
    will be blessed.
  • Blessed shall be thy basket and thy kneading-trough.
  • Wherever you go and whatever you do,
    you will be blessed.
  • Blessed shalt thou be in thy coming in, and blessed shalt thou be in thy going out.
  • “The LORD will conquer your enemies when they attack you. They will attack you from one direction, but they will scatter from you in seven!
  • Jehovah will give up, smitten before thee, thine enemies that rise up against thee; they shall come out against thee one way, and by seven ways shall they flee before thee.
  • “The LORD will guarantee a blessing on everything you do and will fill your storehouses with grain. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.
  • Jehovah will command blessing on thee in thy granaries, and in all the business of thy hand; and he will bless thee in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee.
  • “If you obey the commands of the LORD your God and walk in his ways, the LORD will establish you as his holy people as he swore he would do.
  • Jehovah will establish thee unto himself a holy people as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou keep the commandments of Jehovah thy God, and walk in his ways.
  • Then all the nations of the world will see that you are a people claimed by the LORD, and they will stand in awe of you.
  • And all peoples of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of Jehovah, and they shall be afraid of thee.
  • “The LORD will give you prosperity in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you, blessing you with many children, numerous livestock, and abundant crops.
  • And Jehovah will give thee abundance of good, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land that Jehovah swore unto thy fathers to give thee.
  • The LORD will send rain at the proper time from his rich treasury in the heavens and will bless all the work you do. You will lend to many nations, but you will never need to borrow from them.
  • Jehovah will open to thee his good treasure, the heavens, to give rain unto thy land in its season, and to bless all the work of thy hand; and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow.
  • If you listen to these commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today, and if you carefully obey them, the LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you will always be on top and never at the bottom.
  • And Jehovah will make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if thou hearken unto the commandments of Jehovah thy God, which I command thee this day, to keep and to do them,
  • You must not turn away from any of the commands I am giving you today, nor follow after other gods and worship them.
  • and if thou turn not aside from any of the words that I command thee this day, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

  • Curses for Disobedience

“But if you refuse to listen to the LORD your God and do not obey all the commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come and overwhelm you:
  • The Curses of Disobedience

But it shall come to pass if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of Jehovah thy God, to take heed to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day, that all these curses shall come upon thee and overtake thee.
  • Your towns and your fields
    will be cursed.
  • Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field.
  • Your fruit baskets and breadboards
    will be cursed.
  • Cursed shall be thy basket and thy kneading-trough.
  • Your children and your crops
    will be cursed.
The offspring of your herds and flocks
    will be cursed.
  • Cursed shall be the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy ground, the offspring of thy kine, and the increase of thy sheep.
  • Wherever you go and whatever you do,
    you will be cursed.
  • Cursed shalt thou be in thy coming in, and cursed shalt thou be in thy going out.
  • “The LORD himself will send on you curses, confusion, and frustration in everything you do, until at last you are completely destroyed for doing evil and abandoning me.
  • Jehovah will send upon thee cursing, confusion, and rebuke, in all the business of thy hand which thou doest, until thou be destroyed and until thou perish quickly, because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me.
  • The LORD will afflict you with diseases until none of you are left in the land you are about to enter and occupy.
  • Jehovah will make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until he have consumed thee from off the land whither thou goest to possess it.
  • The LORD will strike you with wasting diseases, fever, and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought, and with blight and mildew. These disasters will pursue you until you die.
  • Jehovah will smite thee with consumption, and with fever, and with inflammation, and with burning ague, and with drought, and with blight, and with mildew, and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.
  • The skies above will be as unyielding as bronze, and the earth beneath will be as hard as iron.
  • And thy heavens which are over thy head shall be brass, and the earth which is under thee, iron.
  • The LORD will change the rain that falls on your land into powder, and dust will pour down from the sky until you are destroyed.
  • Jehovah will give as the rain of thy land powder and dust; from the heavens shall it come down upon thee until thou be destroyed.
  • “The LORD will cause you to be defeated by your enemies. You will attack your enemies from one direction, but you will scatter from them in seven! You will be an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
  • Jehovah will give thee up smitten before thine enemies; thou shalt go out against them one way, and by seven ways shalt thou flee before them; and thou shalt be driven hither and thither into all the kingdoms of the earth.
  • Your corpses will be food for all the scavenging birds and wild animals, and no one will be there to chase them away.
  • And thy carcase shall be meat unto all the fowl of the air, and unto the beasts of the earth, and there shall be no man to scare them away.
  • “The LORD will afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors, scurvy, and the itch, from which you cannot be cured.
  • Jehovah will smite thee with the ulcers of Egypt, and with boils, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed.
  • The LORD will strike you with madness, blindness, and panic.
  • Jehovah will smite thee with madness, and with blindness, and with astonishment of heart;
  • You will grope around in broad daylight like a blind person groping in the darkness, but you will not find your way. You will be oppressed and robbed continually, and no one will come to save you.
  • and thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways; and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled continually, and there shall be none to save.
  • “You will be engaged to a woman, but another man will sleep with her. You will build a house, but someone else will live in it. You will plant a vineyard, but you will never enjoy its fruit.
  • Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her; thou shalt build a house, and thou shalt not dwell therein; thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not eat of it.
  • Your ox will be butchered before your eyes, but you will not eat a single bite of the meat. Your donkey will be taken from you, never to be returned. Your sheep and goats will be given to your enemies, and no one will be there to help you.
  • Thine ox shall be slaughtered before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof; thine ass shall be snatched away from before thy face, and shall not return to thee; thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to recover them.
  • You will watch as your sons and daughters are taken away as slaves. Your heart will break for them, but you won’t be able to help them.
  • Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and languish for them all the day long; and there shall be no power in thy hand [to help it].
  • A foreign nation you have never heard about will eat the crops you worked so hard to grow. You will suffer under constant oppression and harsh treatment.
  • The fruit of thy ground and all thy labour, shall a people that thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed continually.
  • You will go mad because of all the tragedy you see around you.
  • And thou shalt be mad through the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.
  • The LORD will cover your knees and legs with incurable boils. In fact, you will be covered from head to foot.
  • Jehovah will smite thee in the knees and in the legs with evil ulcers, whereof thou canst not be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy head.
  • “The LORD will exile you and your king to a nation unknown to you and your ancestors. There in exile you will worship gods of wood and stone!
  • Jehovah will bring thee, and thy king whom thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation that neither thou nor thy fathers have known, and there shalt thou serve other gods, wood and stone.
  • You will become an object of horror, ridicule, and mockery among all the nations to which the LORD sends you.
  • And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all the peoples whither Jehovah shall lead thee.
  • “You will plant much but harvest little, for locusts will eat your crops.
  • Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather little in; for the locust shall devour it.
  • You will plant vineyards and care for them, but you will not drink the wine or eat the grapes, for worms will destroy the vines.
  • Thou shalt plant and till vineyards, but shalt drink no wine, nor gather [the fruit]; for the worms shall eat it.
  • You will grow olive trees throughout your land, but you will never use the olive oil, for the fruit will drop before it ripens.
  • Olive-trees shalt thou have throughout all thy borders, but thou shalt not anoint thyself with oil; for thine olive-tree shall cast its fruit.
  • You will have sons and daughters, but you will lose them, for they will be led away into captivity.
  • Sons and daughters shalt thou beget, but thou shalt not have them [to be with thee]; for they shall go into captivity.
  • Swarms of insects will destroy your trees and crops.
  • All thy trees and the fruit of thy ground shall the locust possess.
  • “The foreigners living among you will become stronger and stronger, while you become weaker and weaker.
  • The sojourner that is in thy midst shall rise above thee higher and higher, and thou shalt sink down lower and lower.
  • They will lend money to you, but you will not lend to them. They will be the head, and you will be the tail!
  • He shall lend to thee, but thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail.
  • “If you refuse to listen to the LORD your God and to obey the commands and decrees he has given you, all these curses will pursue and overtake you until you are destroyed.
  • And all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, until thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of Jehovah thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee.
  • These horrors will serve as a sign and warning among you and your descendants forever.
  • And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever.
  • If you do not serve the LORD your God with joy and enthusiasm for the abundant benefits you have received,
  • Because thou servedst not Jehovah thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of everything,
  • you will serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you. You will be left hungry, thirsty, naked, and lacking in everything. The LORD will put an iron yoke on your neck, oppressing you harshly until he has destroyed you.
  • thou shalt serve thine enemies whom Jehovah will send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of everything; and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.
  • “The LORD will bring a distant nation against you from the end of the earth, and it will swoop down on you like a vulture. It is a nation whose language you do not understand,
  • Jehovah will bring a nation against thee from afar, from the end of the earth, like as the eagle flieth, a nation whose tongue thou understandest not;
  • a fierce and heartless nation that shows no respect for the old and no pity for the young.
  • a nation of fierce countenance, which regardeth not the person of the old, nor is kind to the young;
  • Its armies will devour your livestock and crops, and you will be destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine, olive oil, calves, or lambs, and you will starve to death.
  • and he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy ground, until thou be destroyed; for he shall not leave thee corn, new wine, or oil, offspring of thy kine, or increase of thy sheep, until he have destroyed thee.
  • They will attack your cities until all the fortified walls in your land — the walls you trusted to protect you — are knocked down. They will attack all the towns in the land the LORD your God has given you.
  • And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and strong walls wherein thou trustedst come down, throughout all thy land; and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates in all thy land, which Jehovah thy God hath given thee.
  • “The siege and terrible distress of the enemy’s attack will be so severe that you will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters, whom the LORD your God has given you.
  • And in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee, thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters whom Jehovah thy God hath given thee.
  • The most tenderhearted man among you will have no compassion for his own brother, his beloved wife, and his surviving children.
  • The eye of the man in thy midst that is tender and very luxurious shall be evil towards his brother, and the wife of his bosom, and the residue of his children which he hath left;
  • He will refuse to share with them the flesh he is devouring — the flesh of one of his own children — because he has nothing else to eat during the siege and terrible distress that your enemy will inflict on all your towns.
  • so that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children that he eateth, because he hath nothing left him in the siege and in the straitness wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates.
  • The most tender and delicate woman among you — so delicate she would not so much as touch the ground with her foot — will be selfish toward the husband she loves and toward her own son or daughter.
  • The eye of the tender and luxurious woman in thy midst who would not attempt to set the sole of her foot upon the ground from luxuriousness and from tenderness, shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom, and her son, and her daughter,
  • She will hide from them the afterbirth and the new baby she has borne, so that she herself can secretly eat them. She will have nothing else to eat during the siege and terrible distress that your enemy will inflict on all your towns.
  • because of her afterbirth which hath come out between her feet, and her children whom she shall bear; for she shall secretly eat them for want of everything in the siege and in the straitness wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.
  • “If you refuse to obey all the words of instruction that are written in this book, and if you do not fear the glorious and awesome name of the LORD your God,
  • If thou wilt not take heed to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, to fear this glorious and fearful name, JEHOVAH THY GOD;
  • then the LORD will overwhelm you and your children with indescribable plagues. These plagues will be intense and without relief, making you miserable and unbearably sick.
  • then Jehovah will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, great and persistent plagues and evil and persistent sicknesses;
  • He will afflict you with all the diseases of Egypt that you feared so much, and you will have no relief.
  • and he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt which thou art afraid of, and they shall cleave unto thee.
  • The LORD will afflict you with every sickness and plague there is, even those not mentioned in this Book of Instruction, until you are destroyed.
  • Also every sickness and every plague which is not written in the book of this law, them will Jehovah bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed.
  • Though you become as numerous as the stars in the sky, few of you will be left because you would not listen to the LORD your God.
  • And ye shall be left a small company, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou hast not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah thy God.
  • “Just as the LORD has found great pleasure in causing you to prosper and multiply, the LORD will find pleasure in destroying you. You will be torn from the land you are about to enter and occupy.
  • And it shall come to pass, that as Jehovah rejoiced over you to do you good and to multiply you, so Jehovah will rejoice over you to cause you to perish, and to destroy you; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whereunto thou goest to possess it.
  • For the LORD will scatter you among all the nations from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship foreign gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known, gods made of wood and stone!
  • And Jehovah will scatter thee among all peoples, from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; and thou shalt there serve other gods, whom thou hast not known, neither thou nor thy fathers, wood and stone.
  • There among those nations you will find no peace or place to rest. And the LORD will cause your heart to tremble, your eyesight to fail, and your soul to despair.
  • And among these nations shalt thou have no rest, neither shall the sole of thy foot have a resting-place, and Jehovah shall give thee there a trembling heart, languishing of the eyes, and pining of the soul.
  • Your life will constantly hang in the balance. You will live night and day in fear, unsure if you will survive.
  • And thy life shall hang in suspense before thee; and thou shalt be in terror day and night and shalt be afraid of thy life.
  • In the morning you will say, ‘If only it were night!’ And in the evening you will say, ‘If only it were morning!’ For you will be terrified by the awful horrors you see around you.
  • In the morning thou shalt say, Would that it were even! and in the evening thou shalt say, Would that it were morning! through the fright of thy heart wherewith thou shalt be in terror, and through the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.
  • Then the LORD will send you back to Egypt in ships, to a destination I promised you would never see again. There you will offer to sell yourselves to your enemies as slaves, but no one will buy you.”
  • And Jehovah will bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I said unto thee, Thou shalt see it again no more; and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and there shall be no man to buy [you].
