  • Life in the Spirit

    So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.
  • No Condemnation in Christ

    [There is] then now no condemnation to those in Christ Jesus.
  • And because you belong to him, the powera of the life-giving Spirit has freed youb from the power of sin that leads to death.
  • For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and of death.
  • The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature.c So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.
  • For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, having sent his own Son, in likeness of flesh of sin, and for sin, has condemned sin in the flesh,
  • He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.
  • in order that the righteous requirement of the law should be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to flesh but according to Spirit.
  • Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.
  • For they that are according to flesh mind the things of the flesh; and they that are according to Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
  • So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.
  • For the mind of the flesh [is] death; but the mind of the Spirit life and peace.
  • For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.
  • Because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God; for neither indeed can it be:
  • That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.
  • and they that are in flesh cannot please God.
  • But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)
  • Control by the Spirit

    But *ye* are not in flesh but in Spirit, if indeed God's Spirit dwell in you; but if any one has not [the] Spirit of Christ *he* is not of him:
  • And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you lifed because you have been made right with God.
  • but if Christ be in you, the body is dead on account of sin, but the Spirit life on account of righteousness.
  • The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.
  • But if the Spirit of him that has raised up Jesus from among [the] dead dwell in you, he that has raised up Christ from among [the] dead shall quicken your mortal bodies also on account of his Spirit which dwells in you.
  • Therefore, dear brothers and sisters,e you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.
  • Heirs with Christ

    So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to flesh;
  • For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature,f you will live.
  • for if ye live according to flesh, ye are about to die; but if, by the Spirit, ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live:
  • For all who are led by the Spirit of God are childreng of God.
  • for as many as are led by [the] Spirit of God, *these* are sons of God.
  • So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children.h Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”i
  • For ye have not received a spirit of bondage again for fear, but ye have received a spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
  • For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.
  • The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are children of God.
  • And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.
  • And if children, heirs also: heirs of God, and Christ's joint heirs; if indeed we suffer with [him], that we may also be glorified with [him].

  • The Future Glory

    Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.
  • Future Glory

    For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy [to be compared] with the coming glory to be revealed to us.
  • For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are.
  • For the anxious looking out of the creature expects the revelation of the sons of God:
  • Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope,
  • for the creature has been made subject to vanity, not of its will, but by reason of him who has subjected [the same], in hope
  • the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay.
  • that the creature itself also shall be set free from the bondage of corruption into the liberty of the glory of the children of God.
  • For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.
  • For we know that the whole creation groans together and travails in pain together until now.
  • And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children,j including the new bodies he has promised us.
  • And not only [that], but even *we* ourselves, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, we also ourselves groan in ourselves, awaiting adoption, [that is] the redemption of our body.
  • We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don’t need to hopek for it.
  • For we have been saved in hope; but hope seen is not hope; for what any one sees, why does he also hope?
  • But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)
  • But if what we see not we hope, we expect in patience.
  • And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.
  • And in like manner the Spirit joins also its help to our weakness; for we do not know what we should pray for as is fitting, but the Spirit itself makes intercession with groanings which cannot be uttered.
  • And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believersl in harmony with God’s own will.
  • But he who searches the hearts knows what [is] the mind of the Spirit, because he intercedes for saints according to God.
  • And we know that God causes everything to work togetherm for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
  • God Works In All Things

    But we *do* know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to purpose.
  • For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstbornn among many brothers and sisters.
  • Because whom he has foreknown, he has also predestinated [to be] conformed to the image of his Son, so that he should be [the] firstborn among many brethren.
  • And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.
  • But whom he has predestinated, these also he has called; and whom he has called, these also he has justified; but whom he has justified, these also he has glorified.

  • Nothing Can Separate Us from God’s Love

    What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?
  • What shall we then say to these things? If God [be] for us, who against us?
  • Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?
  • He who, yea, has not spared his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also with him grant us all things?
  • Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one — for God himself has given us right standing with himself.
  • Who shall bring an accusation against God's elect? [It is] God who justifies:
  • Who then will condemn us? No one — for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
  • who is he that condemns? [It is] Christ who has died, but rather has been [also] raised up; who is also at the right hand of God; who also intercedes for us.
  • Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?
  • More than Conquerors

    Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? tribulation or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
  • (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”o)
  • According as it is written, For thy sake we are put to death all the day long; we have been reckoned as sheep for slaughter.
  • No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
  • But in all these things we more than conquer through him that has loved us.
  • And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,p neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow — not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.
  • For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,
  • No power in the sky above or in the earth below — indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  • nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which [is] in Christ Jesus our Lord.
