Rahab Protects the Spies
Then Joshua secretly sent out two spies from the Israelite camp at Acacia Grove.a He instructed them, “Scout out the land on the other side of the Jordan River, especially around Jericho.” So the two men set out and came to the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there that night.

І послав Ісус, син Нави́нів, із Ситті́му двох таємних виві́дувачів, говорячи: „Ідіть, розгляньте цей край та Єрихо́н“. І вони пішли, і ввійшли до дому однієї блудни́ці, а ім'я́ їй Раха́в. І переночува́ли вони там.
But someone told the king of Jericho, “Some Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.”
І було донесено єрихо́нському царе́ві, говорячи: „Ось цієї но́чі прийшли сюди якісь люди з Ізраїлевих синів, щоб ви́відати цей край“.
So the king of Jericho sent orders to Rahab: “Bring out the men who have come into your house, for they have come here to spy out the whole land.”
І послав єрихо́нський цар до Раха́ви, говорячи: „Виведи тих людей, що до тебе прийшли, що ввійшли до твого дому, бо вони прийшли, щоб ви́відати ввесь цей край“.
Rahab had hidden the two men, but she replied, “Yes, the men were here earlier, but I didn’t know where they were from.
А та жінка взяла́ двох тих людей, та й сховала їх. І сказала: „Так, прихо́дили були до мене ті люди, та я не знала, звідки вони.
They left the town at dusk, as the gates were about to close. I don’t know where they went. If you hurry, you can probably catch up with them.”
А коли замика́лася брама зо сме́рком, то ті люди вийшли. Не знаю, куди ті люди пішли. Швидко женіться за ними, то ви дожене́те їх“.
(Actually, she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them beneath bundles of flax she had laid out.)
А вона відвела́ їх на дах, та й сховала їх у жмута́х льо́ну, що були зложені в неї на даху́.
So the king’s men went looking for the spies along the road leading to the shallow crossings of the Jordan River. And as soon as the king’s men had left, the gate of Jericho was shut.
А ті люди погналися за ними йорда́нською дорогою аж до бро́дів; а браму замкнули, як тільки вийшла погоня за ними.
Before the spies went to sleep that night, Rahab went up on the roof to talk with them.
І поки вони лягли спати, то вона ввійшла до них на дах,
“I know the LORD has given you this land,” she told them. “We are all afraid of you. Everyone in the land is living in terror.
і сказала до тих людей: „Я знаю, що Господь дав вам цей край, і що жах перед вами напав на нас, і що всі ме́шканці цього кра́ю умлівають зо страху перед вами.
Бо ми чули те, що Господь висушив воду Червоного моря перед вами, коли ви вихо́дили з Єгипту, і що́ зробили ви обом аморейським царям, що по той бік Йорда́ну, Сигонові та Оґові, яких ви вчинили закля́ттям.
No wonder our hearts have melted in fear! No one has the courage to fight after hearing such things. For the LORD your God is the supreme God of the heavens above and the earth below.
І чули ми це, і зомліло наше серце, і не стало вже духу в люди́ни зо стра́ху перед вами, бо Господь, Бог ваш, — Він Бог на небеса́х угорі́ й на землі долі!
“Now swear to me by the LORD that you will be kind to me and my family since I have helped you. Give me some guarantee that
А тепер присягніть мені Го́сподом, що як я вчинила з вами ми́лість, так зробите й ви ми́лість з домом батька мого, і дасте мені правдивого знака.
when Jericho is conquered, you will let me live, along with my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all their families.”
І зоставите при житті ба́тька мого, і матір мою, і братів моїх, і сесте́р моїх, і все, що їхнє, і врятуєте наше життя від смерти“.
“We offer our own lives as a guarantee for your safety,” the men agreed. “If you don’t betray us, we will keep our promise and be kind to you when the LORD gives us the land.”
І сказали їй ті люди: „Душа наша за вас нехай віддана буде на смерть, якщо ви не відкриєте цієї нашої справи. І буде, коли Господь передава́тиме нам оцей край, то ми вчинимо тобі милість та правду“.
Then, since Rahab’s house was built into the town wall, she let them down by a rope through the window.
І вона спустила їх шну́ром через вікно, бо дім її був у стіні́ місько́го му́ру, і в мурі вона жила́.
“Escape to the hill country,” she told them. “Hide there for three days from the men searching for you. Then, when they have returned, you can go on your way.”
І сказала вона їм: „Ідіть на го́ру, щоб не спіткала вас погоня. І ховайтеся там три дні, аж поки не ве́рнеться пого́ня, а пото́му пі́дете своєю дорогою“.
Before they left, the men told her, “We will be bound by the oath we have taken only if you follow these instructions.
І сказали до неї ті люди: „Ми будемо чисті від цієї прися́ги тобі, що ти заприсягла́ нас, якщо ти не вчиниш так.
When we come into the land, you must leave this scarlet rope hanging from the window through which you let us down. And all your family members — your father, mother, brothers, and all your relatives — must be here inside the house.
Оце, як ми будемо вхо́дити до краю, то ти прив'яжеш шнурка́ з цієї нитки че́рвені в вікні, що ти ним нас спустила. А батька свого, і матір свою, і братів своїх, і ввесь дім свого батька збереш до себе до до́му.
If they go out into the street and are killed, it will not be our fault. But if anyone lays a hand on people inside this house, we will accept the responsibility for their death.
І буде, — усі, хто вийде а дверей твого дому назо́вні, кров його на голові його, а ми чисті. А всі, хто буде в домі з тобою, кров його на голові нашій, якщо наша рука буде на ньому.
If you betray us, however, we are not bound by this oath in any way.”
А коли ти відкриєш цю нашу справу, то ми будемо чисті від прися́ги тобі, якою ти заприсягла нас“.
“I accept your terms,” she replied. And she sent them on their way, leaving the scarlet rope hanging from the window.
А вона сказала: „Як ви сказали, нехай буде воно так“. І відпустила їх, а вони пішли. І вона прив'язала в вікні червоного су́каного шнурка́.
The spies went up into the hill country and stayed there three days. The men who were chasing them searched everywhere along the road, but they finally returned without success.
І вони пішли, і вийшли на го́ру, та й сиділи там три дні, аж поки вернулася пого́ня. І шукала погоня по всій дорозі, та не знайшла їх.
Then the two spies came down from the hill country, crossed the Jordan River, and reported to Joshua all that had happened to them.
І повернулися ті два му́жі, і зійшли з гори, і перейшли Йорда́н, і прийшли до Ісуса, сина Нави́нового, та й розповіли́ йому все, що їх спітка́ло.
