New Living Translation

New International Version

  • Events prior to the Lord’s Second Coming

Now, dear brothers and sisters,a let us clarify some things about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and how we will be gathered to meet him.
  • The Man of Lawlessness

Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters,
  • Don’t be so easily shaken or alarmed by those who say that the day of the Lord has already begun. Don’t believe them, even if they claim to have had a spiritual vision, a revelation, or a letter supposedly from us.
  • not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us — whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter — asserting that the day of the Lord has already come.
  • Don’t be fooled by what they say. For that day will not come until there is a great rebellion against God and the man of lawlessnessb is revealed — the one who brings destruction.c
  • Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessnessa is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.
  • He will exalt himself and defy everything that people call god and every object of worship. He will even sit in the temple of God, claiming that he himself is God.
  • He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
  • Don’t you remember that I told you about all this when I was with you?
  • Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things?
  • And you know what is holding him back, for he can be revealed only when his time comes.
  • And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time.
  • For this lawlessness is already at work secretly, and it will remain secret until the one who is holding it back steps out of the way.
  • For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.
  • Then the man of lawlessness will be revealed, but the Lord Jesus will slay him with the breath of his mouth and destroy him by the splendor of his coming.
  • And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming.
  • This man will come to do the work of Satan with counterfeit power and signs and miracles.
  • The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie,
  • He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them.
  • and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
  • So God will cause them to be greatly deceived, and they will believe these lies.
  • For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie
  • Then they will be condemned for enjoying evil rather than believing the truth.
  • and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

  • Believers Should Stand Firm

As for us, we can’t help but thank God for you, dear brothers and sisters loved by the Lord. We are always thankful that God chose you to be among the firstd to experience salvation — a salvation that came through the Spirit who makes you holy and through your belief in the truth.
  • Stand Firm

But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruitsb to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.
  • He called you to salvation when we told you the Good News; now you can share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • With all these things in mind, dear brothers and sisters, stand firm and keep a strong grip on the teaching we passed on to you both in person and by letter.
  • So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachingsc we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
  • Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope,
  • May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope,
  • comfort you and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say.
  • encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.
