Darby Bible Translation

  • Greetings from Paul

This letter is from Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, appointed by the command of God our Savior and Christ Jesus, who gives us hope.
  • Paul's Greeting to Timothy

Paul, apostle of Jesus Christ, according to [the] command of God our Saviour, and of Christ Jesus our hope,
  • I am writing to Timothy, my true son in the faith.
May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace.
  • to Timotheus, [my] true child in faith: grace, mercy, peace, from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

  • Warnings against False Teachings

When I left for Macedonia, I urged you to stay there in Ephesus and stop those whose teaching is contrary to the truth.
  • Warning against False Teaching

Even as I begged thee to remain in Ephesus, [when I was] going to Macedonia, that thou mightest enjoin some not to teach other doctrines,
  • Don’t let them waste their time in endless discussion of myths and spiritual pedigrees. These things only lead to meaningless speculations,a which don’t help people live a life of faith in God.b
  • nor to turn their minds to fables and interminable genealogies, which bring questionings rather than [further] God's dispensation, which [is] in faith.
  • The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.
  • But the end of what is enjoined is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and unfeigned faith;
  • But some people have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless discussions.
  • which [things] some having missed, have turned aside to vain discourse,
  • They want to be known as teachers of the law of Moses, but they don’t know what they are talking about, even though they speak so confidently.
  • desiring to be law-teachers, not understanding either what they say or concerning what they [so] strenuously affirm.
  • We know that the law is good when used correctly.
  • Now we know that the law [is] good if any one uses it lawfully,
  • For the law was not intended for people who do what is right. It is for people who are lawless and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful, who consider nothing sacred and defile what is holy, who kill their father or mother or commit other murders.
  • knowing this, that law has not its application to a righteous person, but to [the] lawless and insubordinate, to [the] impious and sinful, to [the] unholy and profane, to smiters of fathers and smiters of mothers; to murderers,
  • The law is for people who are sexually immoral, or who practice homosexuality, or are slave traders,c liars, promise breakers, or who do anything else that contradicts the wholesome teaching
  • fornicators, sodomites, kidnappers, liars, perjurers; and if any other thing is opposed to sound teaching,
  • that comes from the glorious Good News entrusted to me by our blessed God.
  • according to the glad tidings of the glory of the blessed God, with which *I* have been entrusted.

  • Paul’s Gratitude for God’s Mercy

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength to do his work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve him,
  • God's Grace to Paul

[And] I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me power, that he has counted me faithful, appointing to ministry him
  • even though I used to blaspheme the name of Christ. In my insolence, I persecuted his people. But God had mercy on me because I did it in ignorance and unbelief.
  • who before was a blasphemer and persecutor, and an insolent overbearing [man]: but mercy was shewn me because I did it ignorantly, in unbelief.
  • Oh, how generous and gracious our Lord was! He filled me with the faith and love that come from Christ Jesus.
  • But the grace of our Lord surpassingly over-abounded with faith and love, which [is] in Christ Jesus.
  • This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” — and I am the worst of them all.
  • Faithful [is] the word, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom *I* am [the] first.
  • But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.
  • But for this reason mercy was shewn me, that in me, [the] first, Jesus Christ might display the whole long-suffering, for a delineation of those about to believe on him to life eternal.
  • All honor and glory to God forever and ever! He is the eternal King, the unseen one who never dies; he alone is God. Amen.
  • Now to the King of the ages, [the] incorruptible, invisible, only God, honour and glory to the ages of ages. Amen.

  • Timothy’s Responsibility

Timothy, my son, here are my instructions for you, based on the prophetic words spoken about you earlier. May they help you fight well in the Lord’s battles.
  • This charge, [my] child Timotheus, I commit to thee, according to the prophecies as to thee preceding, in order that thou mightest war by them the good warfare,
  • Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.
  • maintaining faith and a good conscience; which [last] some, having put away, have made shipwreck as to faith;
  • Hymenaeus and Alexander are two examples. I threw them out and handed them over to Satan so they might learn not to blaspheme God.
  • of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered to Satan, that they may be taught by discipline not to blaspheme.
