New Living Translation

Darby Bible Translation

  • All slaves should show full respect for their masters so they will not bring shame on the name of God and his teaching.
  • Instructions to Servants

    Let as many bondmen as are under yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and the teaching be not blasphemed.
  • If the masters are believers, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. Those slaves should work all the harder because their efforts are helping other believersa who are well loved.
    False Teaching and True Riches

    Teach these things, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them.
  • And they that have believing masters, let them not despise [them] because they are brethren; but let them the rather serve them with subjection, because they are faithful and beloved, who profit by the good and ready service [rendered]. These things teach and exhort.
  • Some people may contradict our teaching, but these are the wholesome teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. These teachings promote a godly life.
  • Reject False Doctrines

    If any one teach differently, and do not accede to sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the teaching which [is] according to piety,
  • Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions.
  • he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but sick about questions and disputes of words, out of which arise envy, strife, injurious words, evil suspicions,
  • These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy.
  • constant quarrellings of men corrupted in mind and destitute of the truth, holding gain to be [the end of] piety.
  • Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.
  • Contentment in Godliness

    But piety with contentment *is* great gain.
  • After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.
  • For we have brought nothing into the world: [it is] [manifest] that neither can we carry anything out.
  • So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content.
  • But having sustenance and covering, we will be content with these.
  • But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction.
  • But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and many unwise and hurtful lusts, which plunge men into destruction and ruin.
  • For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
  • For the love of money is [the] root of every evil; which some having aspired after, have wandered from the faith, and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

  • Paul’s Final Instructions

    But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.
  • Fight the Good Fight

    But *thou*, O man of God, flee these things, and pursue righteousness, piety, faith, love, endurance, meekness of spirit.
  • Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have declared so well before many witnesses.
  • Strive earnestly [in] the good conflict of faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which thou hast been called, and hast confessed the good confession before many witnesses.
  • And I charge you before God, who gives life to all, and before Christ Jesus, who gave a good testimony before Pontius Pilate,
  • I enjoin thee before God who preserves all things in life, and Christ Jesus who witnessed before Pontius Pilate the good confession,
  • that you obey this command without wavering. Then no one can find fault with you from now until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.
  • that thou keep the commandment spotless, irreproachable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ;
  • For,
    At just the right time Christ will be revealed from heaven by the blessed and only almighty God, the King of all kings and Lord of all lords.
  • which in its own time the blessed and only Ruler shall shew, the King of those that reign, and Lord of those that exercise lordship;
  • He alone can never die, and he lives in light so brilliant that no human can approach him. No human eye has ever seen him, nor ever will. All honor and power to him forever! Amen.
  • who only has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light; whom no man has seen, nor is able to see; to whom [be] honour and eternal might. Amen.
  • Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.
  • A Charge to the Rich

    Enjoin on those rich in the present age not to be high-minded, nor to trust on the uncertainty of riches; but in the God who affords us all things richly for [our] enjoyment;
  • Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others.
  • to do good, to be rich in good works, to be liberal in distributing, disposed to communicate [of their substance],
  • By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.
  • laying by for themselves a good foundation for the future, that they may lay hold of [what is] really life.
  • Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you. Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge.
  • Final Guidance

    O Timotheus, keep the entrusted deposit, avoiding profane, vain babblings, and oppositions of false-named knowledge,
  • Some people have wandered from the faith by following such foolishness.
    May God’s grace be with you all.
  • of which some having made profession, have missed the faith. Grace [be] with thee.
