New Living Translation

Darby Bible Translation

  • The Lamb Breaks the First Six Seals

    As I watched, the Lamb broke the first of the seven seals on the scroll.a Then I heard one of the four living beings say with a voice like thunder, “Come!”
  • The First Seal: Rider on a White Horse

    And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying, as a voice of thunder, Come [and see].
  • I looked up and saw a white horse standing there. Its rider carried a bow, and a crown was placed on his head. He rode out to win many battles and gain the victory.
  • And I saw: and behold, a white horse, and he that sat upon it having a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went forth conquering and that he might conquer.
  • When the Lamb broke the second seal, I heard the second living being say, “Come!”
  • The Second Seal: War

    And when it opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, Come [and see].
  • Then another horse appeared, a red one. Its rider was given a mighty sword and the authority to take peace from the earth. And there was war and slaughter everywhere.
  • And another, a red horse, went forth; and to him that sat upon it, to him it was given to take peace from the earth, and that they should slay one another; and there was given to him a great sword.
  • When the Lamb broke the third seal, I heard the third living being say, “Come!” I looked up and saw a black horse, and its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand.
  • The Third Seal: Famine

    And when it opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, Come [and see]. And I saw: and behold, a black horse, and he that sat upon it having a balance in his hand.
  • And I heard a voice from among the four living beings say, “A loaf of wheat bread or three loaves of barley will cost a day’s pay.b And don’t wastec the olive oil and wine.”
  • And I heard as a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, A choenix of wheat for a denarius, and three choenixes of barley for a denarius: and do not injure the oil and the wine.
  • When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the fourth living being say, “Come!”
  • The Fourth Seal: Death

    And when it opened the fourth seal, I heard [the voice of] the fourth living creature saying, Come [and see].
  • I looked up and saw a horse whose color was pale green. Its rider was named Death, and his companion was the Grave.d These two were given authority over one-fourth of the earth, to kill with the sword and famine and diseasee and wild animals.
  • And I saw: and behold, a pale horse, and he that sat upon it, his name [was] Death, and hades followed with him; and authority was given to him over the fourth of the earth to slay with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and by the beasts of the earth.
  • When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of all who had been martyred for the word of God and for being faithful in their testimony.
  • The Fifth Seal: Martyrs

    And when it opened the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of them that had been slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held;
  • They shouted to the Lord and said, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you judge the people who belong to this world and avenge our blood for what they have done to us?”
  • and they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O sovereign Ruler, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell upon the earth?
  • Then a white robe was given to each of them. And they were told to rest a little longer until the full number of their brothers and sistersf — their fellow servants of Jesus who were to be martyred — had joined them.
  • And there was given to them, to each one a white robe; and it was said to them that they should rest yet a little while, until both their fellow-bondmen and their brethren, who were about to be killed as they, should be fulfilled.
  • I watched as the Lamb broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake. The sun became as dark as black cloth, and the moon became as red as blood.
  • The Sixth Seal: Terror

    And I saw when it opened the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as hair sackcloth, and the whole moon became as blood,
  • Then the stars of the sky fell to the earth like green figs falling from a tree shaken by a strong wind.
  • and the stars of heaven fell upon the earth, as a fig tree, shaken by a great wind, casts its unseasonable figs.
  • The sky was rolled up like a scroll, and all of the mountains and islands were moved from their places.
  • And the heaven was removed as a book rolled up, and every mountain and island were removed out of their places.
  • Then everyone — the kings of the earth, the rulers, the generals, the wealthy, the powerful, and every slave and free person — all hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains.
  • And the kings of the earth, and the great, and the chiliarchs, and the rich, and the strong, and every bondman and freeman, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains;
  • And they cried to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb.
  • and they say to the mountains and to the rocks, Fall on us, and have us hidden from [the] face of him that sits upon the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb;
  • For the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to survive?”
  • because the great day of his wrath is come, and who is able to stand?
