New Living Translation

New King James Version

  • The Lamb Breaks the First Six Seals

As I watched, the Lamb broke the first of the seven seals on the scroll.a Then I heard one of the four living beings say with a voice like thunder, “Come!”
  • First Seal: The Conqueror

Now I saw when the Lamb opened one of the [a]seals; and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, “Come and see.”
  • I looked up and saw a white horse standing there. Its rider carried a bow, and a crown was placed on his head. He rode out to win many battles and gain the victory.
  • And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.
  • When the Lamb broke the second seal, I heard the second living being say, “Come!”
  • Second Seal: Conflict on Earth

When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come [b]and see.”
  • Then another horse appeared, a red one. Its rider was given a mighty sword and the authority to take peace from the earth. And there was war and slaughter everywhere.
  • Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.
  • When the Lamb broke the third seal, I heard the third living being say, “Come!” I looked up and saw a black horse, and its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand.
  • Third Seal: Scarcity on Earth

When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales[c] in his hand.
  • And I heard a voice from among the four living beings say, “A loaf of wheat bread or three loaves of barley will cost a day’s pay.b And don’t wastec the olive oil and wine.”
  • And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A [d]quart of wheat for a [e]denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.”
  • When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the fourth living being say, “Come!”
  • Fourth Seal: Widespread Death on Earth

When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.”
  • I looked up and saw a horse whose color was pale green. Its rider was named Death, and his companion was the Grave.d These two were given authority over one-fourth of the earth, to kill with the sword and famine and diseasee and wild animals.
  • So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And [f]power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth.
  • When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of all who had been martyred for the word of God and for being faithful in their testimony.
  • Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs

When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held.
  • They shouted to the Lord and said, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you judge the people who belong to this world and avenge our blood for what they have done to us?”
  • And they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”
  • Then a white robe was given to each of them. And they were told to rest a little longer until the full number of their brothers and sistersf — their fellow servants of Jesus who were to be martyred — had joined them.
  • Then a white robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed.
  • I watched as the Lamb broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake. The sun became as dark as black cloth, and the moon became as red as blood.
  • Sixth Seal: Cosmic Disturbances

I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and [g]behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the [h]moon became like blood.
  • Then the stars of the sky fell to the earth like green figs falling from a tree shaken by a strong wind.
  • And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind.
  • The sky was rolled up like a scroll, and all of the mountains and islands were moved from their places.
  • Then the sky [i]receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.
  • Then everyone — the kings of the earth, the rulers, the generals, the wealthy, the powerful, and every slave and free person — all hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains.
  • And the kings of the earth, the great men, [j]the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains,
  • And they cried to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb.
  • and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!
  • For the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to survive?”
  • For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”
