Darby Bible Translation

  • Judah and Simeon Conquer the Land

After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, “Which tribe should go first to attack the Canaanites?”
  • War against Remaining Canaanites

And it came to pass after the death of Joshua that the children of Israel asked Jehovah, saying, Which of us shall go up against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
  • The LORD answered, “Judah, for I have given them victory over the land.”
  • And Jehovah said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
  • The men of Judah said to their relatives from the tribe of Simeon, “Join with us to fight against the Canaanites living in the territory allotted to us. Then we will help you conquer your territory.” So the men of Simeon went with Judah.
  • And Judah said to Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, and let us fight against the Canaanites, and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot; and Simeon went with him.
  • When the men of Judah attacked, the LORD gave them victory over the Canaanites and Perizzites, and they killed 10,000 enemy warriors at the town of Bezek.
  • And Judah went up; and Jehovah delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they smote them in Bezek, ten thousand men.
  • While at Bezek they encountered King Adoni-bezek and fought against him, and the Canaanites and Perizzites were defeated.
  • And they found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
  • Adoni-bezek escaped, but the Israelites soon captured him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
  • And Adoni-Bezek fled, and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
  • Adoni-bezek said, “I once had seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off, eating scraps from under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them.” They took him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
  • And Adoni-Bezek said, Seventy kings, with their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gleaned under my table: as I have done, so God has requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
  • The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem and captured it, killing all its people and setting the city on fire.
  • Jerusalem and Hebron Captured

And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
  • Then they went down to fight the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev, and the western foothills.a
  • And afterwards the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the hill-country, and in the south, and in the lowland.
  • Judah marched against the Canaanites in Hebron (formerly called Kiriath-arba), defeating the forces of Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
  • And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron -- the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-Arba; and they slew Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.
  • From there they went to fight against the people living in the town of Debir (formerly called Kiriath-sepher).
  • Additional Cities Captured

And from there he went against the inhabitants of Debir; now the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher.
  • Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage to the one who attacks and captures Kiriath-sepher.”
  • And Caleb said, He that smites Kirjath-sepher and takes it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife.
  • Othniel, the son of Caleb’s younger brother, Kenaz, was the one who conquered it, so Acsah became Othniel’s wife.
  • And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.
  • When Acsah married Othniel, she urged himb to ask her father for a field. As she got down off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What’s the matter?”
  • And it came to pass as she came, that she urged him to ask of her father the field; and she sprang down from the ass. And Caleb said to her, What wouldest thou?
  • She said, “Let me have another gift. You have already given me land in the Negev; now please give me springs of water, too.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.
  • And she said to him, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a southern land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
  • When the tribe of Judah left Jericho — the city of palms — the Kenites, who were descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, traveled with them into the wilderness of Judah. They settled among the people there, near the town of Arad in the Negev.
  • And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, had gone up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.
  • Then Judah joined with Simeon to fight against the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they completely destroyedc the town. So the town was named Hormah.d
  • And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it; and they called the name of the city Hormah.
  • In addition, Judah captured the towns of Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ekron, along with their surrounding territories.
  • And Judah took Gazah and its border, and Ashkelon and its border, and Ekron and its border.

  • Israel Fails to Conquer the Land

The LORD was with the people of Judah, and they took possession of the hill country. But they failed to drive out the people living in the plains, who had iron chariots.
  • And Jehovah was with Judah; and he took possession of the hill-country, for he did not dispossess the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
  • The town of Hebron was given to Caleb as Moses had promised. And Caleb drove out the people living there, who were descendants of the three sons of Anak.
  • And they gave to Caleb Hebron, as Moses had said; and he dispossessed from thence the three sons of Anak.
  • The tribe of Benjamin, however, failed to drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem. So to this day the Jebusites live in Jerusalem among the people of Benjamin.
  • And the children of Benjamin did not dispossess the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.
  • The descendants of Joseph attacked the town of Bethel, and the LORD was with them.
  • And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel; and Jehovah was with them.
  • They sent men to scout out Bethel (formerly known as Luz).
  • And the house of Joseph sent to search out Bethel; now the name of the city before was Luz.
  • They confronted a man coming out of the town and said to him, “Show us a way into the town, and we will have mercy on you.”
  • And the guards saw a man come forth out of the city, and said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, how [we] may enter into the city, and we will shew thee kindness.
  • So he showed them a way in, and they killed everyone in the town except that man and his family.
  • And he shewed them how to enter into the city. And they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
  • Later the man moved to the land of the Hittites, where he built a town. He named it Luz, which is its name to this day.
  • And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.
  • The tribe of Manasseh failed to drive out the people living in Beth-shan,e Taanach, Dor, Ibleam, Megiddo, and all their surrounding settlements, because the Canaanites were determined to stay in that region.
  • Places Not Conquered

And Manasseh did not dispossess Beth-shean and its dependent villages, nor Taanach and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its dependent villages; and the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
  • When the Israelites grew stronger, they forced the Canaanites to work as slaves, but they never did drive them completely out of the land.
  • And it came to pass when Israel became strong, that they made the Canaanites tributary; but they did not utterly dispossess them.
  • The tribe of Ephraim failed to drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, so the Canaanites continued to live there among them.
  • And Ephraim did not dispossess the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt among them in Gezer.
  • The tribe of Zebulun failed to drive out the residents of Kitron and Nahalol, so the Canaanites continued to live among them. But the Canaanites were forced to work as slaves for the people of Zebulun.
  • Zebulun did not dispossess the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.
  • The tribe of Asher failed to drive out the residents of Acco, Sidon, Ahlab, Aczib, Helbah, Aphik, and Rehob.
  • Asher did not dispossess the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor Ahlab, nor Achzib, nor Helbah, nor Aphik, nor Rehob;
  • Instead, the people of Asher moved in among the Canaanites, who controlled the land, for they failed to drive them out.
  • and the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not dispossess them.
  • Likewise, the tribe of Naphtali failed to drive out the residents of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath. Instead, they moved in among the Canaanites, who controlled the land. Nevertheless, the people of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath were forced to work as slaves for the people of Naphtali.
  • Naphtali did not dispossess the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; and he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, but the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries to them.
  • As for the tribe of Dan, the Amorites forced them back into the hill country and would not let them come down into the plains.
  • And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill-country, for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley.
  • The Amorites were determined to stay in Mount Heres, Aijalon, and Shaalbim, but when the descendants of Joseph became stronger, they forced the Amorites to work as slaves.
  • And the Amorites would dwell on mount Heres, in Ajalon and in Shaalbim; but the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, and they became tributaries.
  • The boundary of the Amorites ran from Scorpion Passf to Sela and continued upward from there.
  • And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upwards.
