Darby Bible Translation

  • Elimelech Moves His Family to Moab

In the days when the judges ruled in Israel, a severe famine came upon the land. So a man from Bethlehem in Judah left his home and went to live in the country of Moab, taking his wife and two sons with him.
  • Naomi Widowed

And it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man went from Bethlehem-Judah, to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
  • The man’s name was Elimelech, and his wife was Naomi. Their two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in the land of Judah. And when they reached Moab, they settled there.
  • And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem-Judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
  • Then Elimelech died, and Naomi was left with her two sons.
  • And Elimelech Naomi's husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.
  • The two sons married Moabite women. One married a woman named Orpah, and the other a woman named Ruth. But about ten years later,
  • And they took them Moabitish wives; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the second Ruth: and they abode there about ten years.
  • both Mahlon and Kilion died. This left Naomi alone, without her two sons or her husband.
  • And Mahlon and Chilion died also, both of them; and the woman was left of her two children and of her husband.

  • Naomi and Ruth Return

Then Naomi heard in Moab that the LORD had blessed his people in Judah by giving them good crops again. So Naomi and her daughters-in-law got ready to leave Moab to return to her homeland.
  • Ruth's Loyalty to Naomi

And she arose, she and her daughters-in-law, and returned from the fields of Moab; for she had heard in the fields of Moab how that Jehovah had visited his people to give them bread.
  • With her two daughters-in-law she set out from the place where she had been living, and they took the road that would lead them back to Judah.
  • Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she had been, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.
  • But on the way, Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back to your mothers’ homes. And may the LORD reward you for your kindness to your husbands and to me.
  • And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each to her mother's house. Jehovah deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead and with me.
  • May the LORD bless you with the security of another marriage.” Then she kissed them good-bye, and they all broke down and wept.
  • Jehovah grant you that ye may find rest, each in the house of her husband. And she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice and wept.
  • “No,” they said. “We want to go with you to your people.”
  • And they said to her, We will certainly return with thee to thy people.
  • But Naomi replied, “Why should you go on with me? Can I still give birth to other sons who could grow up to be your husbands?
  • And Naomi said, Return, my daughters: why will ye go with me? Are there yet sons in my womb, that they could be your husbands?
  • No, my daughters, return to your parents’ homes, for I am too old to marry again. And even if it were possible, and I were to get married tonight and bear sons, then what?
  • Return, my daughters, go; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, I have hope, should I even have a husband to-night, and should I also bear sons,
  • Would you wait for them to grow up and refuse to marry someone else? No, of course not, my daughters! Things are far more bitter for me than for you, because the LORD himself has raised his fist against me.”
  • would ye wait on that account till they were grown? Would ye stay on that account from having husbands? No, my daughters, for I am in much more bitterness than you; for the hand of Jehovah is gone out against me.
  • And again they wept together, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye. But Ruth clung tightly to Naomi.
  • And they lifted up their voice and wept again. And Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clave to her.
  • “Look,” Naomi said to her, “your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods. You should do the same.”
  • And she said, Behold, thy sister-in-law is gone back to her people and to her gods: return after thy sister-in-law.
  • But Ruth replied, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.
  • And Ruth said, Do not intreat me to leave thee, to return from [following] after thee; for whither thou goest I will go, and where thou lodgest I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God;
  • Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!”
  • where thou diest will I die, and there will I be buried. Jehovah do so to me, and more also, if aught but death part me and thee!
  • When Naomi saw that Ruth was determined to go with her, she said nothing more.
  • And when she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, she left off speaking to her.
  • So the two of them continued on their journey. When they came to Bethlehem, the entire town was excited by their arrival. “Is it really Naomi?” the women asked.
  • Naomi and Ruth Return to Bethlehem

And they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they came to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and the [women] said, Is this Naomi?
  • “Don’t call me Naomi,” she responded. “Instead, call me Mara,a for the Almighty has made life very bitter for me.
  • And she said to them, Call me not Naomi -- call me Mara; for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.
  • I went away full, but the LORD has brought me home empty. Why call me Naomi when the LORD has caused me to sufferb and the Almighty has sent such tragedy upon me?”
  • I went out full, and Jehovah has brought me home again empty. Why do ye call me Naomi, seeing Jehovah has brought me low, and the Almighty has afflicted me?
  • So Naomi returned from Moab, accompanied by her daughter-in-law Ruth, the young Moabite woman. They arrived in Bethlehem in late spring, at the beginning of the barley harvest.
  • So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the fields of Moab; and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of the barley-harvest.
