    Saul Tries to Kill David

    Saul now urged his servants and his son Jonathan to assassinate David. But Jonathan, because of his strong affection for David,

    І говорив Саул до свого сина Йоната́на та до всіх своїх рабів, щоб убити Давида. Та Йонатан, син Саулів, дуже кохав Давида.

    told him what his father was planning. “Tomorrow morning,” he warned him, “you must find a hiding place out in the fields.

    І розповів Йонатан Давидові, говорячи: „Батько мій Саул хоче вбити тебе. А тепер уранці стережися, — сиди в укритті́, і схова́йся.

    I’ll ask my father to go out there with me, and I’ll talk to him about you. Then I’ll tell you everything I can find out.”

    А я вийду, і стану при своєму ба́тькові на полі, де ти будеш, і я буду говорити про тебе до свого батька. І що́ побачу, те розповім тобі“.

    The next morning Jonathan spoke with his father about David, saying many good things about him. “The king must not sin against his servant David,” Jonathan said. “He’s never done anything to harm you. He has always helped you in any way he could.

    І говорив Йонатан своєму батькові Саулові добре про Давида, і сказав йому: „Нехай не згрішить цар проти раба свого, проти Давида, бо не згрішив він проти тебе, а вчинки його дуже добрі для тебе.

    Have you forgotten about the time he risked his life to kill the Philistine giant and how the LORD brought a great victory to all Israel as a result? You were certainly happy about it then. Why should you murder an innocent man like David? There is no reason for it at all!”

    І наражав він на небезпе́ку життя своє, і вбив филисти́млянина, — і Господь учинив велике спасі́ння для всього Ізраїля. Ти це бачив та радів. І для чого згрішиш ти проти невинної кро́ви, бажаючи вбити Давида безпричи́нно?“

    So Saul listened to Jonathan and vowed, “As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be killed.”

    І послу́хався Саул Йонатанового голосу. І Саул присягнув: „Як живий Господь, — не буде той убитий!“

    Afterward Jonathan called David and told him what had happened. Then he brought David to Saul, and David served in the court as before.

    І покликав Йонатан Давида, і переказав йому Йонатан усі ті слова́. І привів Йонатан Давида до Саула, і він був перед ним, як давніше.

    War broke out again after that, and David led his troops against the Philistines. He attacked them with such fury that they all ran away.

    А війна була далі. І вийшов Давид, і воював з филисти́млянами, та й завдав їм велику пора́зку, — і вони повтікали перед ним.

    But one day when Saul was sitting at home, with spear in hand, the tormenting spirita from the LORD suddenly came upon him again. As David played his harp,

    А злий дух від Господа був на Саулі, і він сидів у своїм домі, і спис його — в руці його, а Давид грав рукою.

    Saul hurled his spear at David. But David dodged out of the way, and leaving the spear stuck in the wall, he fled and escaped into the night.

    А Саул хотів ударити списом у Давида, прибити його до стіни, та відхили́вся той перед Саулом, і він увігнав списа в стіну́, а Давид утік, і був урято́ваний тієї ночі.

    Michal Saves David’s Life

    Then Saul sent troops to watch David’s house. They were told to kill David when he came out the next morning. But Michal, David’s wife, warned him, “If you don’t escape tonight, you will be dead by morning.”

    І послав Саул посланців до Давидового дому, щоб стерегли його й щоб убили його вранці. І розповіла́ Давидові його жінка Мелхола, говорячи: „Якщо ти не врятуєш свого життя цієї ночі, то взавтра ти будеш забитий“.

    So she helped him climb out through a window, and he fled and escaped.

    І Мелхола спустила Давида через вікно, і він пішов і втік, і врятувався.

    Then she took an idolb and put it in his bed, covered it with blankets, and put a cushion of goat’s hair at its head.

    І взяла Мелхола домашнього божка́, і поклала до ліжка, а поду́шку з ко́зячого во́лосу поклала в голова́х його, та й прикрила плаще́м.

    When the troops came to arrest David, she told them he was sick and couldn’t get out of bed.

    І послав Саул посланці́в, щоб узяти Давида, а вона сказала: „Він хворий!“

    But Saul sent the troops back to get David. He ordered, “Bring him to me in his bed so I can kill him!”
  • 15
    І послав Саул тих посланці́в побачити Давида, говорячи: „Принесіть його в лі́жку до мене, щоб забити його!“

    But when they came to carry David out, they discovered that it was only an idol in the bed with a cushion of goat’s hair at its head.

    І ввійшли ті посланці́, аж ось у ліжку домашній божо́к, а в голова́х його — поду́шка з ко́зячого во́лосу!

    “Why have you betrayed me like this and let my enemy escape?” Saul demanded of Michal.
    “I had to,” Michal replied. “He threatened to kill me if I didn’t help him.”

    І сказав Саул до Мелхоли: „На́що ти так обмани́ла мене, і відпустила мого ворога, і він урятувався?“ А Мелхола відказала Саулові: „Він сказав мені: Відпусти мене, бо інакше вб'ю тебе!“

    So David escaped and went to Ramah to see Samuel, and he told him all that Saul had done to him. Then Samuel took David with him to live at Naioth.

    А Давид утік і врятувався. І прийшов він до Самуїла до Рами́, і розповів йому все, що́ зробив йому Саул. І пішов він та Самуїл, та й осілися в Найоті.

    When the report reached Saul that David was at Naioth in Ramah,

    І розпові́джено Саулові, говорячи: „Ось Давид у Найоті в Рамі́“.

    he sent troops to capture him. But when they arrived and saw Samuel leading a group of prophets who were prophesying, the Spirit of God came upon Saul’s men, and they also began to prophesy.

    І послав Саул посланці́в, щоб узяли́ Давида. І вони побачили громаду пророків, що пророкувала, а Самуїл стояв над ними. І на Саулових посланців злинув Дух Божий, і пророкували й вони.

    When Saul heard what had happened, he sent other troops, but they, too, prophesied! The same thing happened a third time.

    I розповіли́ про це Саулові. І послав він інших посланці́в, та пророкували також і вони. А Саул послав посланці́в ще третіх, та пророкували й вони.

    Finally, Saul himself went to Ramah and arrived at the great well in Secu. “Where are Samuel and David?” he demanded.
    “They are at Naioth in Ramah,” someone told him.

    І пішов і він до Рами́, і прийшов аж до великої ями, що в Сеху, і запитав, і сказав: „Де Самуїл та Давид?“ А запитаний відказав: „Ось у Найоті в Рамі“.

    But on the way to Naioth in Ramah the Spirit of God came even upon Saul, and he, too, began to prophesy all the way to Naioth!

    І пішов він туди до Найоту в Рамі. І зли́нув Божий Дух також на нього, — і він усе пророкував, аж поки не прийшов у Найот у Рамі.

    He tore off his clothes and lay naked on the ground all day and all night, prophesying in the presence of Samuel. The people who were watching exclaimed, “What? Is even Saul a prophet?”

    І зняв і він одежу свою, і пророкував і він перед Самуїлом, і лежав наги́й ці́лий той день та ці́лу ніч. Тому то й говорять: „Чи й Саул між пророками?“
