Из всех диких зверей, которых создал Господь Бог, самым хитрым был змей. Он спросил женщину:
— Правда ли Бог сказал: «Не ешьте ни с какого дерева в саду»?

The Temptation and Fall of Man

Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

Женщина ответила змею:
— Мы можем есть плоды с деревьев сада,

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;

3

но Бог сказал: «Не ешьте плодов с дерева, которое посередине сада, и не трогайте их, иначе вы умрете».

but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”

— Нет, вы не умрете, — сказал змей женщине.

Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

5

— Просто Бог знает, что когда вы съедите их, ваши глаза откроются, и вы станете как Бог,17 познав добро и зло.18

For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Тогда женщина увидела, что плод дерева был хорош в пищу и приятен на вид, и что дерево было желанно, как источник мудрости; и она взяла один из плодов и съела. Она дала плод и мужу, который был с ней, и он ел его.

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was [a]pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

Их глаза открылись, и они поняли, что наги; тогда они сшили себе повязки из листьев инжира.

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves [b]coverings.

Подул ветерок,19 и они услышали, как Господь Бог ходит20 по саду. Адам и его жена спрятались от Господа Бога среди деревьев сада,

And they heard the [c]sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the [d]cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

но Господь Бог воззвал к Адаму:
— Где ты?

Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

Адам ответил:
— Я услышал Тебя21 в саду и испугался, потому что я наг, вот я и спрятался.

So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

11

Он спросил:
— Кто сказал тебе, что ты наг? Ты ел плоды дерева, с которого Я запретил тебе есть?

And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

12

Адам ответил:
— Женщина, которую Ты дал мне, чтобы она была со мной, — это она дала мне плод с того дерева, и я съел его.

Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

13

Тогда Господь Бог сказал женщине:
— Что же ты сделала?
Женщина ответила:
— Змей обманул меня, вот я и ела.

And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14

Тогда Господь Бог сказал змею:

— За то, что ты сделал это,
проклят ты больше любого скота
и всех диких зверей!
Ты будешь ползать на брюхе,
ты будешь есть прах
во все дни твоей жизни.

So the Lord God said to the serpent:
“Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.

15

Я положу вражду
между тобой и женщиной
и между твоим потомком и ее потомком22:
он будет поражать тебя в голову,
а ты будешь жалить его в пяту.23

And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”

А женщине Он сказал:

— Я мучительной сделаю беременность твою:
в страдании ты будешь рожать детей.
Ты будешь желать мужа,
и он будет властвовать над тобою.

To the woman He said:
“I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
In pain you shall bring forth children;
Your desire shall be [e]for your husband,
And he shall rule over you.”

17

Адаму же Он сказал:

— Так как ты послушался жены и съел плод с дерева,
о котором Я велел тебе: «Не ешь от него»,
проклята из-за тебя земля:
в тяжком труде ты будешь питаться от нее
во все дни твоей жизни.

Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:
“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.

18

Она произрастит тебе колючки и сорняки,
ты будешь питаться полевыми злаками.

Both thorns and thistles it shall [f]bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.

19

В поте лица своего ты будешь есть свой хлеб,
пока не вернешься в землю,
из которой был взят;
потому что ты — прах,
и в прах ты вернешься.

In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.”

20

Адам назвал свою жену Ева,24 потому что она стала матерью всех живущих.

And Adam called his wife’s name Eve,[g] because she was the mother of all living.

Господь Бог сделал одежды из кожи и одел в них Адама и его жену.

Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.

22

Потом Господь Бог сказал:
— Познав добро и зло, человек стал теперь как один из Нас. Нельзя, чтобы он протянул руку, и, сорвав плод также и с дерева жизни, съел его и стал жить вечно.

Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever” —

И Господь Бог изгнал его из сада Эдем, чтобы он трудился на земле, из которой был взят.

therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.

24

Изгнав человека, Он поставил на востоке от сада25 Эдем херувимов26 и вращающийся пламенный меч, чтобы охранять путь к дереву жизни.

So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
