Между домом Саула и домом Давида шла продолжительная война. Давид становился все сильнее и сильнее, а дом Саула все слабее и слабее.

Joab Kills Abner

Now there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David. But David grew stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.

В Хевроне у Давида родились сыновья. Его первенцем был Амнон, сын изреельтянки Ахиноамь;

Sons of David

Sons were born to David in Hebron: His firstborn was Amnon by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

вторым был Килеаб, сын Авигайль, вдовы Навала из Кармила;
третьим — Авессалом, сын Маахи, дочери гешурского царя Талмая;

his second, [a]Chileab, by Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite; the third, Absalom the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur;

четвертым — Адония, сын Аггифы;
пятым — Шефатия, сын Авиталы;

the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

шестым — Итреам, сын жены Давида Эглы.
Они родились у Давида в Хевроне.

and the sixth, Ithream, by David’s wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.

Abner Joins Forces with David

Now it was so, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner was strengthening his hold on the house of Saul.

У Саула была наложница по имени Рицпа, дочь Айя. Иш-Бошет сказал Авнеру:
— Почему ты спишь с наложницей моего отца?

And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. So Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why have you gone in to my father’s concubine?”

Авнер очень разгневался на слова Иш-Бошета и ответил:
— Разве я — собачья голова, служащая на стороне Иудеи? Сегодня я верен дому твоего отца Саула и его семье и друзьям. Я не предал тебя Давиду. А ты сейчас обвиняешь меня в преступлении из-за этой женщины!

Then Abner became very angry at the words of Ishbosheth, and said, “Am I a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show loyalty to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman?

Так пусть же Бог сурово накажет8 Авнера, если я не сделаю для Давида того, о чем клялся ему Господь,

May God do so to Abner, and more also, if I do not do for David as the Lord has sworn to him —

10

— не заберу царство у дома Саула и не поставлю престол Давида над Израилем и Иудеей от Дана до Вирсавии.

to transfer the kingdom from the [b]house of Saul, and set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan to Beersheba.”

Иш-Бошет не осмеливался далее говорить с Авнером, потому что испугался его.

And he could not answer Abner another word, because he feared him.

12

Авнер отправил послов от своего лица сказать Давиду: «Чья эта земля? Заключи со мной союз, и я помогу тебе перетянуть на свою сторону весь Израиль».

Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to David, saying, “Whose is the land?” saying also, “Make your covenant with me, and indeed my hand shall be with you to bring all Israel to you.”

13

Давид ответил:
— Хорошо, я заключу с тобой союз. Но я требую от тебя одного: не приходи ко мне, если не приведешь с собой Михаль, дочь Саула, когда придешь увидеться со мной.

And David said, “Good, I will make a covenant with you. But one thing I require of you: you shall not see my face unless you first bring Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.”

14

Затем Давид послал вестников к сыну Саула Иш-Бошету с требованием: «Дай мне мою жену Михаль, которую я взял себе за сто филистимских краеобрезаний».

So David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”

Иш-Бошет отдал приказ, и ее забрали от ее мужа Фалтиила, сына Лаиша.

And Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband, from [c]Paltiel the son of Laish.

16

Но ее муж пошел вслед и плакал, идя за ней, всю дорогу до Бахурима. Авнер сказал ему:
— Ступай домой!
И тот возвратился.

Then her husband went along with her to Bahurim, [d]weeping behind her. So Abner said to him, “Go, return!” And he returned.

17

Авнер совещался со старейшинами Израиля и сказал:
— Некогда вы хотели поставить Давида своим царем.

Now Abner had communicated with the elders of Israel, saying, “In time past you were seeking for David to be king over you.

18

Теперь сделайте это! Ведь Господь обещал Давиду: «Через Моего слугу Давида Я избавлю Мой народ Израиль от руки филистимлян и от руки всех его врагов».

18

Now then, do it! For the Lord has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of My servant David, [e]I will save My people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and the hand of all their enemies.’ ”

Еще Авнер говорил лично с вениамитянами. После этого он пошел в Хеврон рассказать Давиду все, что готовы были сделать Израиль и весь дом Вениамина.

And Abner also spoke in the hearing of Benjamin. Then Abner also went to speak in the hearing of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel and the whole house of Benjamin.

20

Когда Авнер, с которым было двадцать человек, пришел к Давиду в Хеврон, Давид устроил пир для него и для его людей.

20

So Abner and twenty men with him came to David at Hebron. And David made a feast for Abner and the men who were with him.

21

Авнер сказал Давиду:
— Позволь мне немедленно отправиться и собрать весь Израиль к господину моему царю, чтобы они заключили с тобой союз, а ты стал править надо всем, чего желает твое сердце.
Давид отпустил Авнера, и он ушел с миром.

Then Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may reign over all that your heart desires.” So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.

22

В это время люди Давида и Иоав вернулись из набега и принесли с собой богатую добычу. Но Авнера у Давида в Хевроне уже не было, потому что Давид9 отпустил его, и он ушел с миром.

Joab Murders Abner

At that moment the servants of David and Joab came from a raid and brought much [f]spoil with them. But Abner was not with David in Hebron, for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace.

23

Когда пришли Иоав и с ним все воины, ему сказали, что Авнер, сын Нира, приходил к царю, царь отпустил его, и он ушел с миром.

When Joab and all the troops that were with him had come, they told Joab, saying, “Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he sent him away, and he has gone in peace.”

24

Иоав пришел к царю и сказал:
— Что ты сделал? Ведь к тебе приходил Авнер! Почему ты отпустил его? Теперь он ушел!

24

Then Joab came to the king and said, “What have you done? Look, Abner came to you; why is it that you sent him away, and he has already gone?

25

Ты же знаешь Авнера, сына Нира, — он приходил, чтобы обмануть тебя и выведать все, что ты делаешь и куда ты ходишь.

25

Surely you realize that Abner the son of Ner came to deceive you, to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you are doing.”

26

Иоав вышел от Давида, послал за Авнером вестников, и они вернули его от колодца Сира. Давид об этом не знал.

And when Joab had gone from David’s presence, he sent messengers after Abner, who brought him back from the well of Sirah. But David did not know it.

27

Когда Авнер вернулся в Хеврон, Иоав отвел его в сторону, в глубь ворот, словно для того, чтобы поговорить с ним наедине. И там, желая отомстить за кровь своего брата Асаила, Иоав поразил его в живот, и он умер.

Now when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him privately, and there [g]stabbed him in the stomach, so that he died for the blood of Asahel his brother.

28

После этого Давид, услышав о случившемся, сказал:
— Я и мое царство навеки неповинны перед Господом в крови Авнера, сына Нира.

Afterward, when David heard it, he said, “My kingdom and I are [h]guiltless before the Lord forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner.

29

Пусть его кровь падет на голову Иоава и на весь дом его отца! Пусть дом Иоава никогда не остается без больного с гноящейся язвой или прокаженного,10 или опирающегося на костыль, или падающего от меча, или нуждающегося в пище.

29

Let it rest on the head of Joab and on all his father’s house; and let there never fail to be in the [i]house of Joab one who has a discharge or is a leper, who leans on a staff or falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.”

30

(Иоав и его брат Авишай убили Авнера потому, что он убил их брата Асаила в битве при Гаваоне.)

So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

31

Затем Давид сказал Иоаву и всем людям, которые были с ним:
— Разорвите свои одежды, оденьтесь в рубище и плачьте над Авнером.
Царь Давид сам пошел за похоронными дрогами.

David’s Mourning for Abner

Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes, gird yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn for Abner.” And King David followed the coffin.

32

Они похоронили Авнера в Хевроне, и царь громко плакал у могилы Авнера. Весь народ тоже плакал.

So they buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner, and all the people wept.

33

Царь оплакивал Авнера этой песней:

«Разве должен был Авнер умереть подлой смертью?

33

And the king sang a lament over Abner and said:
“Should Abner die as a fool dies?

34

Руки твои не были связаны,
ноги твои не были скованы.
Ты пал, как падают перед разбойниками».

И весь народ заплакал над ним снова.

Your hands were not bound
Nor your feet put into fetters;
As a man falls before wicked men, so you fell.”
Then all the people wept over him again.

35

Затем все они пришли и убеждали Давида поесть, пока еще продолжался день, но Давид дал клятву, говоря:
— Пусть Бог сурово накажет меня, если я поем хлеба или чего-нибудь еще прежде, чем зайдет солнце!

And when all the people came to persuade David to eat food while it was still day, David took an oath, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else till the sun goes down!”

36

Весь народ заметил это и был этим доволен; да и все, что делал царь, нравилось всему народу.

36

Now all the people took note of it, and it pleased them, since whatever the king did pleased all the people.

37

Так в тот день весь народ и весь Израиль узнал, что царь не принимал никакого участия в убийстве Авнера, сына Нира.

For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it had not been the king’s intent to kill Abner the son of Ner.

38

И царь сказал своим людям:
— Разве вы не понимаете, что сегодня в Израиле пал вождь и великий человек?

38

Then the king said to his servants, “Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel?

39

И сегодня, хотя я и помазанный царь, я слаб, а эти сыновья Саруи для меня слишком сильны. Пусть Господь воздаст делающему злое по злобе его!

39

And I am weak today, though anointed king; and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too harsh for me. The Lord shall repay the evildoer according to his wickedness.”
