    скуден днями, но скорбью сыт.

    Job Acknowledges the Finality of Death

    Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

    Он, как цветок, прорастает и вянет.
    Ускользает, как тень, не задерживается.

    He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

    И на нем задержал Ты взгляд?
    И его34 Ты на суд ведешь?

    And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

    Кто выведет чистое из нечистого?
    Никто!

    Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

    Если дни его установлены,
    и число его месяцев Ты сосчитал,
    и поставил рубеж, который он не преступит,

    Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

    то отведи от него Свой взгляд,
    оставь его в покое,
    пусть он, как батрак,
    порадуется своим дням.

    Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

    Ведь и для дерева есть надежда:
    если срубят его, оно оживет
    и снова пустит побеги.

    For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

    Пусть корни его одряхлели в земле,
    и пень омертвел в пыли,

    Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

    чуть почует воду — расцветет,
    пустит ветви, как молодое растение.

    Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

    А человек умрет и исчезнет,
    испустит дух, и где он?

    But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

    Как исчезает вода из озера,
    как иссякает река и сохнет,

    As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

    так и смертный ляжет и не поднимется;
    пока не исчезнут небеса — не проснется
    и от сна своего не встанет.

    So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

    О если бы Ты укрыл меня в мире мертвых,
    спрятал меня, пока не пройдет Твой гнев!
    О если бы Ты установил мне срок,
    а потом вспомнил бы обо мне!

    O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

    Когда человек умрет, будет ли он жить вновь?
    Все дни моей службы я бы ждал,
    когда придет мое избавление.35

    If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

    Ты бы позвал, и я бы ответил;
    творение Твоих рук растрогало бы Тебя.

    Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

    Тогда Ты считал бы мои шаги,
    но греха моего не выискивал бы;

    For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

    накрепко запечатана была бы моя вина,
    Ты сокрыл бы мои проступки.

    My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

    Но как гора рушится и дробится,
    и как скала сходит со своего места,

    And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

    как вода подтачивает камни,
    и потоки смывают почву,
    так и Ты губишь надежды смертного.

    The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

    Ты теснишь его до конца, и он уходит;
    Ты искажаешь его лицо и отсылаешь его.

    Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

    В чести ли дети его, он не знает;
    обижают ли их, не видит.

    His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

    Он лишь чувствует: тело его болит
    и плачет лишь о себе.

    But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
