    — Есть рудник для серебра
    и для золота есть горн плавильный.

    The Earth's Treasures

    Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold which they refine;

    Из земли добывают железо,
    и плавят медь из руды.

    Iron is taken out of the dust, and copper is molten out of the stone.

    Тьме рудокоп полагает предел.
    Ищет он в отдаленных пределах
    руду в непроглядной мгле.

    [Man] putteth an end to the darkness, and exploreth to the utmost limit, the stones of darkness and of the shadow of death.

    Далеко от жилья он роет колодец,
    в местах, что забыла стопа человека;
    висит он и зыблется вдали от людей.

    He openeth a shaft far from the inhabitants [of the earth]: forgotten of the foot, they hang suspended; away below men they hover.

    Земля, на которой вырастает пища,
    изнутри изрыта, будто огнем.

    As for the earth, out of it cometh bread, and underneath it is turned up as by fire;

    Сапфиров62 россыпь в ее камнях,
    и в ней — золотой песок.

    The stones of it are the place of sapphires, and it hath dust of gold.

    Пути к ним не знает хищная птица,
    соколиный глаз их не видел.

    It is a path no bird of prey knoweth, and the vulture's eye hath not seen it;

    Гордые звери их не топтали,
    и лев по ним не ходил.

    The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed over it.

    Человек на гранит простирает руку
    и с корнем вырывает горы.

    [Man] putteth forth his hand upon the flinty rock, he overturneth the mountains by the root.

    Он прорубает проходы в скалах,
    и глаза его видят все их сокровища.

    He cutteth out channels in the rocks, and his eye seeth every precious thing.

    Он останавливает63 истоки рек,
    и сокровенное выносит на свет.

    He bindeth the streams that they drip not, and what is hidden he bringeth forth to light.

    Но где можно найти мудрость?
    Где обитает разум?

    Wisdom an Excellent Gift of God

    But wisdom, where shall it be found? and where is the place of understanding?

    Не знает смертный ее дома64;
    на земле живых ее не найти.

    Man knoweth not the value thereof; and it is not found in the land of the living.

    Пучина скажет: «Во мне ее нет»;
    и молвит море: «Не у меня она».

    The deep saith, It is not in me; and the sea saith, It is not with me.

    Ее не купить за червонное золото,
    не отвесить цену ее серебром.

    Choice gold cannot be given for it, nor silver be weighed for its price.

    Не купить ее ни за золото Офира,
    ни за драгоценный оникс и сапфир.

    It is not set in the balance with gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, and the sapphire.

    Не сравнить ее с золотом и кристаллом,65
    на утварь из чистого золота не обменять.

    Gold and glass cannot be compared to it, nor vessels of fine gold be its exchange.

    Что говорить о кораллах и яшме;
    превыше рубинов стоимость мудрости.

    Corals and crystal are no more remembered; yea, the acquisition of wisdom is above rubies.

    Не сравнить с ней топазы из Куша66;
    не купить ее за отменное золото.

    The topaz of Ethiopia shall not be compared to it, neither shall it be set in the balance with pure gold.

    Откуда приходит мудрость?
    Где обитает разум?

    Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?

    Скрыта она от глаз всех живущих
    и от птиц небесных утаена.

    For it is hidden from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the fowl of the heavens.

    Погибель и Смерть говорят:
    «Мы слышали только слух о ней».

    Destruction and death say, We have heard its report with our ears.

    Только Богу ведом к ней путь,
    Он знает ее жилище,

    God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth its place:

    ведь Он озирает края земли
    и видит все, что под небесами.

    For he looketh to the ends of the earth, he seeth under the whole heaven.

    Когда Он давал ветру силу
    и водам ставил пределы,

    In making a weight for the wind, and meting out the waters by measure,

    когда Он дождю предписал устав
    и путь проложил для молний,

    In appointing a statute for the rain, and a way for the thunder's flash:

    Он увидел мудрость и восхвалил ее,
    утвердил ее, испытал

    Then did he see it, and declare it; he established it, yea, and searched it out;
  • 28

    и сказал человеку так:
    «Воистину, страх перед Владыкой — вот мудрость,
    сторониться зла — это разум».

    And unto man he said, Lo, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
