    Того часу чутка про Ісуса дійшла до Ірода четверовласника,

    The Death of John the Baptist

    At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus,

    і він сказав до своїх слуг: “Це Йоан Христитель! Це він воскрес із мертвих і тому чудодійні сили діють у ньому!”

    and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”

    Бо Ірод був схопив Йоана, зв'язав його і вкинув у темницю — через Іродіяду, жінку брата свого Филипа;

    For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,a
  • 4
    Йоан бо говорив до нього: “Не можна тобі її мати.”
  • 4
    because John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
  • 5
    Він хотів його вбити, та боявся народу, бо його мали за пророка.
  • 5
    And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.
  • 6
    Коли настав день народження Ірода, дочка Іродіяди танцювала перед усіма й догодила Іродові;

    But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod,
  • 7
    отож, клянучись, обіцяв їй дати, чого тільки попросить.

    so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.
  • 8
    Та, під намовою матері своєї, сказала йому: “Дай мені тут на полумиску голову Йоана Христителя.”
  • 8
    Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.”
  • 9
    І засмутився цар, але задля клятви і тих, що разом за столом сиділи, звелів дати, —
  • 9
    And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given.
  • 10
    тож послав стяти голову Йоанові в темниці.
  • 10
    He sent and had John beheaded in the prison,
  • 11
    Принесли, отже, на полумиску його голову й дали дівчині, а та піднесла своїй матері.

    and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
  • 12
    І прийшли його учні, взяли тіло й поховали його; і пішли та сповістили про те Ісуса.
  • 12
    And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus.
  • 13
    Почувши це, Ісус відплив звідси човном у пустинне й самітне місце; народ же, довідавшись про це, пішов за ним з міст пішки.

    Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

    Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns.

    А вийшовши Ісус, побачив силу народу і змилосердився над ними та вигоїв їхніх недужих.

    When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
  • 15
    Якже настав вечір, підійшли до нього його учні й кажуть: “Пусте це місце та й час минув уже. Відпусти людей, нехай ідуть по селах та куплять собі поживи.”
  • 15
    Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”
  • 16
    А Ісус сказав їм: “Не треба їм відходити: дайте ви їм їсти.”
  • 16
    But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.”
  • 17
    Вони ж мовлять до нього: “Ми маємо тут тільки п'ять хлібів і дві рибі.”
  • 17
    They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.”
  • 18
    Тоді він каже: “Принесіть мені їх сюди.”
  • 18
    And he said, “Bring them here to me.”
  • 19
    І, звелівши народові посідати на траві, взяв п'ять хлібів і дві риби, підвів очі до неба, поблагословив і розламав ті хліби, і дав учням, а учні — людям.

    Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.

    Всі їли до наситу й назбирали куснів, що зосталися, дванадцять кошів повних.

    And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over.

    Тих же, що їли, було яких п'ять тисяч чоловіків, окрім жінок та дітей.
  • 21
    And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
  • 22
    І зараз же спонукав учнів увійти до човна й переплисти на той бік раніше від нього, тим часом як він відпускав народ.

    Jesus Walks on the Water

    Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

    І коли відпустив народ, пішов на гору помолитися насамоті. Як звечоріло, він був там сам один.

    And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,
  • 24
    Човен уже був посеред моря і його кидали хвилі, бо вітер був супротивний.
  • 24
    but the boat by this time was a long wayb from the land,c beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them.
  • 25
    О четвертій сторожі ночі (Ісус) прийшов до них, ступаючи морем.
  • 25
    And in the fourth watch of the nightd he came to them, walking on the sea.
  • 26
    Учні, побачивши, що він іде морем, жахнулись. “То привид!” — заговорили й закричали з переляку.
  • 26
    But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear.
  • 27
    Та Ісус тієї ж миті мовив до них: “Заспокойтесь, — це я, не страхайтеся!”
  • 27
    But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
  • 28
    Аж тут Петро озвавсь до нього й каже: “Господи, коли це ти, повели мені підійти водою до тебе!”
  • 28
    And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
  • 29
    “Підійди!” — сказав Ісус. І вийшов Петро з човна, почав іти по воді і підійшов до Ісуса;
  • 29
    He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.
  • 30
    але, побачивши, що вітер сильний, злякався, почав потопати й крикнув: “Господи, рятуй мене!”
  • 30
    But when he saw the wind,e he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”
  • 31
    Ісус же притьмом простягнув руку, вхопив його і мовив до нього: “Маловіре; чого засумнівався?”
  • 31
    Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
  • 32
    І як увійшли до човна, вітер ущух.
  • 32
    And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
  • 33
    А тоді ті, що були в човні, вклонилися йому до ніг, кажучи: “Ти істинно — Син Божий!”
  • 33
    And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
  • 34
    І перепливши, прибули в землю генезаретську.
  • 34
    Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret

    And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.

    Пізнали його люди цього місця і розголосили по всій тій околиці вістку про нього. І принесли до нього всіх недужих

    And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and brought to him all who were sick
  • 36
    та й просили його, аби тільки приторкнутись їм до краю його одягу. І скільки їх доторкалося, одужували.

    and implored him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.
