Так! срібло має початкову жилу, й золото своє місце, де його плавлють.
The Earth's Treasures
Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold which they refine;
Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold which they refine;
Залїзо добувають із землї, а мідь витоплюють із каміння.
Iron is taken out of the dust, and copper is molten out of the stone.
(Чоловік) робить кінець тьмі й пильно шукає за (таким) каменем у мороцї й найглухійшій темнотї.
[Man] putteth an end to the darkness, and exploreth to the utmost limit, the stones of darkness and of the shadow of death.
Пробивають закоп у місцях, де не постала нога; спускаючись, висять і сумують далеко від людей.
He openeth a shaft far from the inhabitants [of the earth]: forgotten of the foot, they hang suspended; away below men they hover.
Земля, де хлїб росте, у нутрі розрита, неначе огнем.
As for the earth, out of it cometh bread, and underneath it is turned up as by fire;
Камінь її — то сафир із золотими крупцями.
The stones of it are the place of sapphires, and it hath dust of gold.
Стежки туди не знає хижа птиця, й не зазирнуло туди око яструба;
It is a path no bird of prey knoweth, and the vulture's eye hath not seen it;
Не топтали її левчуки, й не ходив по нїй шакаль.
The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed over it.
На граніт накладає він (чоловік) руку свою, з коренем перевертає гори.
[Man] putteth forth his hand upon the flinty rock, he overturneth the mountains by the root.
В скелях прорубує канали, й все дорогоцїнне вбачає око його.
He cutteth out channels in the rocks, and his eye seeth every precious thing.
Зупиняє протоки бурчаків і, що заховано в тьмі, все те на сьвітло виносить.
He bindeth the streams that they drip not, and what is hidden he bringeth forth to light.
А де ж мудрість знайти? і де є місце розуму?
Wisdom an Excellent Gift of God
But wisdom, where shall it be found? and where is the place of understanding?

Чоловік не знає цїни її, й не знаходиться вона на землї живих.
Man knoweth not the value thereof; and it is not found in the land of the living.
Безодня говорить: Не в менї вона; та й море каже: Не в мене!
The deep saith, It is not in me; and the sea saith, It is not with me.
Не продається вона за золото та й не вимінюєсь її за срібло ваговите;
Choice gold cannot be given for it, nor silver be weighed for its price.
Не в цїнї вона з золотом Офирським, нї з дорогоцїнним ониксом, нї з сафіром.
It is not set in the balance with gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, and the sapphire.
Не рівняєсь із нею золото й кришталь, та й не виміняєш її за посуди щирозолоті.
Gold and glass cannot be compared to it, nor vessels of fine gold be its exchange.
А про коралї та перли й згадувати нїщо; здобути премудрість — цїннїйш над рубини.
Corals and crystal are no more remembered; yea, the acquisition of wisdom is above rubies.
Ба й топаз Етиопський їй не рівня; щирим золотом не цїнуєсь вона.
The topaz of Ethiopia shall not be compared to it, neither shall it be set in the balance with pure gold.
Звідки ж береся премудрість? і де є місце розуму?
Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
Від усього, що живе, скрита вона, ба не догледить її й птаство піднебесне.
For it is hidden from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the fowl of the heavens.
Правда, безодня та смерть говорять: до ушей наших доходила чутка про неї;
Destruction and death say, We have heard its report with our ears.
Але тільки Бог знає тропу до неї та знає й місце її.
God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth its place:
Він бо прозирає всї концї сьвіту, й що під небом, він вбачає.
For he looketh to the ends of the earth, he seeth under the whole heaven.
Як він визначив вітрові вагу й водї давав міру,
In making a weight for the wind, and meting out the waters by measure,
Коли вказував дощам закон, а блискавицям дорогу, —
In appointing a statute for the rain, and a way for the thunder's flash:
Тодї він бачив її й явив її, й приспособив її, та навчив ще й слїдити її,
Then did he see it, and declare it; he established it, yea, and searched it out;
