З очима моїми вчинив я вмову, щоб і не думати про дївицю.

1

Job Asserts His Integrity

“I have made a covenant with my eyes;
How then could I gaze at a virgin?

2

Бо й яка ж доля була б менї від Бога з висоти й яке наслїддє від Вседержителя з неба?

2

“And what is the portion of God from above
Or the heritage of the Almighty from on high?

3

Чи ж не погибель безбожному, й не допуст лиходїєві?

3

“Is it not calamity to the unjust
And disaster to those who work iniquity?

4

Та й чи ж не бачив він доріг моїх, — не лїчив всї ступнї мої?

4

“Does He not see my ways
And number all my steps?

5

Як я ходив у марнотї й неправдї, а нога моя квапила до омани, —

5

“If I have walked with falsehood,
And my foot has hastened after deceit,

6

То нехай зважать мене на вазї правди й Бог розпізнає мою безвинність.

6

Let Him weigh me with accurate scales,
And let God know my integrity.

7

Наколи ноги мої схибили з правої путї й серце моє ходило слїдом за очима моїми, та коли що небудь нечисте прилипло до рук моїх,

“If my step has turned from the way,
Or my heart followed my eyes,
Or if any spot has stuck to my hands,

8

Так нехай я сїю, а їсть хто иншій, і нехай пагонцї мої вирвані будуть із коріннєм.

8

Let me sow and another eat,
And let my crops be uprooted.

9

Як до чужої жони коли небудь серце моє загорілось, і я засїдавсь зрадливо під дверима в ближнього мого,

9

“If my heart has been enticed by a woman,
Or I have lurked at my neighbor’s doorway,

10

Так нехай жінка моя жорнить на другого, й нехай другі збиткуються над нею.

10

May my wife grind for another,
And let others kneel down over her.

11

Се ж бо й гріх і проступок, що під суд підпадає;

11

“For that would be a lustful crime;
Moreover, it would be an iniquity punishable by judges.

12

Се той огонь, що жере аж до загуби, й він усе майно моє викоренив би до щаду.

12

“For it would be fire that consumes to Abaddon,
And would uproot all my increase.

13

Як би я нехтував право раба чи рабинї моєї, коли б вони правувались зо мною,

13

“If I have despised the claim of my male or female slaves
When they filed a complaint against me,

14

То що б я робив, коли б Бог встав і поглянув на мене, й що б я міг відказати йому?

14

What then could I do when God arises?
And when He calls me to account, what will I answer Him?

15

Хиба ж бо не той, що мене збудував в утробі, збудував і його, й однако дав нам образ у матернім лонї?

15

“Did not He who made me in the womb make him,
And the same one fashion us in the womb?

16

Хиба ж я відказував злиденним у їх просьбі, або томив очі вдові (дожидаючій помочи)?

16

“If I have kept the poor from their desire,
Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

17

Чи сам же я з'їдав мій шматок хлїба, а не їв з його й сиротина?

17

Or have eaten my morsel alone,
And the orphan has not shared it

18

Та ж він ріс у мене, як у батька, і ще з малку малого мого піклувавсь я вдовою.

18

(But from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,
And from infancy I guided her),

19

Як я побачу було кого погибаючого, або без одежі злидаря, що не мав чим прикритись, —

19

If I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing,
Or that the needy had no covering,

20

Чи ж не благословляли мене стегна його (за одежу), чи ж не обогрівала його вовна з отари моєї?

20

If his loins have not thanked me,
And if he has not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep,

21

Як на безбатьченка зняв я руку, хоч я знав, що мати му оборону в воротях (на судї),

21

If I have lifted up my hand against the orphan,
Because I saw I had support in the gate,

22

То нехай рамено моє відпаде од плеча, а рука моя відломиться від ліктя,

22

Let my shoulder fall from the socket,
And my arm be broken off at the elbow.

23

Бо страшна менї була б кара від Бога: я б перед величчю його не устоявся.

23

“For calamity from God is a terror to me,
And because of His majesty I can do nothing.

24

Не вже ж покладав я в золотї опору мою, або промовляв до скарбу: ти надїя моя?

24

“If I have put my confidence in gold,
And called fine gold my trust,

25

Чи ж я тїшився моїм статком великим, та що рука моя придбала багато?

25

If I have gloated because my wealth was great,
And because my hand had secured so much;

26

Дивлячись на сонце, як воно сяє, як той місяць велично пливе,

26

If I have looked at the sun when it shone
Or the moon going in splendor,

27

Чи дав я увестись серцю мойму тайкома, та й чи ж цїлували уста мої (на їх шану) руку мою?

27

And my heart became secretly enticed,
And my hand threw a kiss from my mouth,

28

Та ж се був би проступок, підпадаючий під суд, бо тодї відрікся б я Бога Всевишнього.

28

That too would have been an iniquity calling for judgment,
For I would have denied God above.

29

Чи радїв я з погибелї ворога мого, або веселився, коли постигло його нещастє?

29

“Have I rejoiced at the extinction of my enemy,
Or exulted when evil befell him?

30

Нї! я нїколи не дав устам моїм волї, грішити, проклинаючи душу його.

30

“No, I have not allowed my mouth to sin
By asking for his life in a curse.

31

Чи не говорила ж челядь шатра мого: хто ж не наситився б мясом його?

31

“Have the men of my tent not said,
‘Who can find one who has not been satisfied with his meat’?

32

Приходень нїколи не ночував на улицї; двері мої отвирав я всякому, хто мимо проходив.

32

“The alien has not lodged outside,
For I have opened my doors to the traveler.

33

Коли б я робом людським таїв проступки мої, й скривав у грудях хиби мої,

33

“Have I covered my transgressions like Adam,
By hiding my iniquity in my bosom,

34

То менї страшно було б перед громадою, й погорда краян лякала б мене, й я мовчав би та й не виходив за двері.

34

Because I feared the great multitude,
And the contempt of families terrified me,
And kept silent and did not go out of doors?

35

О, коли б то хтось переслухав мене! Се моє бажаннє, щоб Вседержитель дав відповідь менї, а оборонник мій все те списав!

35

“Oh that I had one to hear me!
Behold, here is my signature;
Let the Almighty answer me!
And the indictment which my adversary has written,

36

Я носив би той запис на плечах моїх, і вкладав собі, як вінець;

36

Surely I would carry it on my shoulder,
I would bind it to myself like a crown.

37

Я б виявив йому кожний ступінь мій, а наближався б до його*, мов до князя.

37

“I would declare to Him the number of my steps;
Like a prince I would approach Him.

38

Коли поле моє проти мене кричало, і загони його на мене нарікали;

38

“If my land cries out against me,
And its furrows weep together;

39

Коли їв я вроджай його та й не віддячив за його, й томив життє робітників,

39

If I have eaten its fruit without money,
Or have caused its owners to lose their lives,

40

То нехай замість пшеницї росте в мене осетий, а замість ячменю — кукіль! І скінчились слова Йовові.

40

Let briars grow instead of wheat,
And stinkweed instead of barley.”
The words of Job are ended.
