Озвався Господь до Йова з бурі й промовив:
God Challenges Job
And Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,
And Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,
Хто сей, що затемнює задуми мої нерозумними словами?
Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
Зараз підпережи чересла твої*, як мужеві годиться: Я питати буду, ти ж відказуй менї:
Gird up now thy loins like a man; and I will demand of thee, and inform thou me.
Де тодї був ти, коли я закладав основи землї? Скажи, коли знаєш!
Where wast thou when I founded the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding.
Хто визначив міру її, чи знаєш? або хто протягав шнур по нїй?
Who set the measures thereof -- if thou knowest? or who stretched a line upon it?
На чім оперто підвалини її, або хто заложив угловий камінь її,
Whereupon were the foundations thereof sunken? or who laid its corner-stone,
Як тим часом всї ранні зорі веселилися, і всї сини Божі викликували з радощів?
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Хто запер, мов би ворітьми море, як воно ринуло, та, неначе з матернього лона, вийшло,
And who shut up the sea with doors, when it burst forth, issuing out of the womb?
Як я зробив йому хмари одежою, а мряку пеленами його,
When I made the cloud its garment, and thick darkness a swaddling band for it;
Та вказав йому гряницї, поставив засови й ворота,
When I cut out for it my boundary, and set bars and doors,
І сказав: ось покіль доходити будеш, а далїй не перейдеш, і тут межа надутим филям твоїм?
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come and no further, and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
Чи давав єси коли на віку твойму наказ ранкові, або вказав зорі місце, (де зачервонїти)
Hast thou since thy days commanded the morning? hast thou caused the dawn to know its place,
Та щоб обхопила краї землї, а земля стрясла з себе безбожників;
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the wicked might be shaken out of it?
Щоб земля перемінила вид свій, мов глина під печаткою, та стала, мов барвиста одежа,
It is changed like the signet-clay; and [all things] stand forth as in a garment:
А безбожникам щоб одняте було сьвітло, і сьмілива рука їх зломилась.
And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the uplifted arm is broken.
Чи то ти сходив у глибину морську та провірював безодню?
Hast thou entered as far as the springs of the sea? and hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep?
Чи ворота смертні тобі відчинялись, чи бачив ти двері темряви страшної?
Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee? and hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?
Чи обняв ти оком сьвіт увесь широкий? Говори, коли все знаєш?
Hath thine understanding compassed the breadths of the earth? Declare if thou knowest it all.
Куди дорога до пробутку сьвітла, й де місце темряви?
Where is the way to where light dwelleth? and the darkness, where is its place,
А вже ж ти доходив до гряниць її й знаєш стежки до дому її.
That thou shouldest take it to its bound, and that thou shouldest know the paths to its house?
Певно знаєш, бо ти був тодї вже народжений, й днїв життя твого дуже багато!
Thou knowest, for thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great!
А може доходив до складів снїгу, й бачив грядові комори,
Hast thou entered into the storehouses of the snow, and hast thou seen the treasuries of the hail,
Що я їх переховую на час смутку, на день побою та війни (проти ледачих)?
Which I have reserved for the time of distress, for the day of battle and war?
Якою дорогою розливаєсь сьвітло й шириться східний вітер по землї?
By what way is the light parted, [and] the east wind scattered upon the earth?
Хто дощу канали риє, й хто блискавицям путь указує та грому,
Who hath divided a channel for the rain-flood, and a way for the thunder's flash;
Щоб ійшов дощ на землю безлюдну, на пустиню, де нема й чоловіка,
To cause it to rain on the earth, where no one is; on the wilderness wherein there is not a man;
Щоб насичував пустиню й степ, і розбуджував до росту зароди травні?
To satisfy the desolate and waste [ground], and to cause the sprout of the grass to spring forth?
Чи в доща є батько? Хто роджає краплї роси?
Hath the rain a father? or who begetteth the drops of dew?
Із чиєго лоня виходить лід і иней в воздусї — хто його родить?
Out of whose womb cometh the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who bringeth it forth?
Води, мов камінь тверднуть, і поверхня безоднї замерзає.
When the waters lie hidden as in stone, and the face of the deep holdeth fast together.
Чи звязав би ти узол у Плеяди, чи розвязав би Орійона*?
Canst thou fasten the bands of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
Чи повиводив би ти громаду зірниць у свій час, Ас-зірницю із дїтьми її?
Dost thou bring forth the constellations each in its season? or dost thou guide the Bear with her sons?
Чи небесне знаєш право, чи можеш порядок його завести на землї?
Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? dost thou determine their rule over the earth?
Чи можеш підняти голос твій до хмар, щоб рясний дощ спустився на тебе?
Dost thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that floods of waters may cover thee?
Чи можеш ти розсилати блискавицї, та й чи прийдуть вони 'д тобі й скажуть: Ось ми!
Dost thou send forth lightnings that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
Хто вложив мудрість у серце, й хто дав мисль розумові?
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the mind?
Хто може перелїчити хмари своєю мудрістю й здержати сей посуд піднебесний,
Who numbereth the clouds with wisdom? or who poureth out the bottles of the heavens,
Коли пил обертаєсь в болото, й в грудки злипаєсь?
When the dust runneth as into a molten mass, and the clods cleave fast together?
Не вже ж то ти ловиш левицї здобич і левчуків годуєш,
Dost thou hunt the prey for the lioness, and dost thou satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
Як вони лежать в берлозї, або тихо в гущавинї засїдаються?
When they crouch in [their] dens, [and] abide in the thicket to lie in wait?
