    Не квапся язиком, і серце твоє нехай не посьпішає вимовляти слово перед Богом. Бог бо на небі, а ти на землї; тим нехай у тебе буде слів не багацько.

    Fear God, Keep Your Vows

    Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.

    Бо як сни снуються тодї, як багацько клопотів, так і мова дурного виявлює себе многостю слів.

    Do not be rash with your mouth,
    And let not your heart utter anything hastily before God.
    For God is in heaven, and you on earth;
    Therefore let your words be few.

    Як обречешся обітом перед Богом, то не гайсь його спевнити, не любить бо він дурних; спевни твою обітницю.

    For a dream comes through much activity,
    And a fool’s voice is known by his many words.

    Лучше не обітувати, нїж, обітувавши, не спевнити.

    When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it;
    For He has no pleasure in fools.
    Pay what you have vowed —

    Не давай устам твоїм уводити тебе в провину, й не кажи ангелам (Божим): Се була похибка. На що тобі того, щоб Бог прогнївався за твої слова та й в нїщо обернув дїло рук твоїх?

    Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.

    Бо, як у многих видивах сонних, так і в многих словах — багато марноти. Нї! ти бійся Бога.

    Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your [a]excuse and destroy the work of your hands?

    Як побачиш у якій країнї, що тїснять убогого та суд і правду насилують, то не дивуйся тому, бо над високим стоїть висший, а над ними ще висший;

    For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God.

    Перед же веде в цїлій країнї — царь, а сей дбає про всю країну.

    The Vanity of Gain and Honor

    If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent [b]perversion of justice and righteousness in a province, do not marvel at the matter; for high official watches over high official, and higher officials are over them.

    Хто любить гроші, не вдовольниться нїколи, хто ж любить багацтво, не похіснуєсь ним. А се — марнота.

    Moreover the profit of the land is for all; even the king is served from the field.

    Намножується статків, та бо намножується й тих, що їх спотребовують; і яке ж тому добро, чиї вони: хиба що дивиться на них своїми очима?

    He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver;
    Nor he who loves abundance, with increase.
    This also is vanity.

    Роботящий солодко спить, чи він ізїв мало, чи багацько; а пересит не дає багатому заснути в смак.

    When goods increase,
    They increase who eat them;
    So what profit have the owners
    Except to see them with their eyes?

    Є ще одна доскулююча неміч, яку я бачив під сонцем; багацтво, що береже багатий на шкоду собі.

    The sleep of a laboring man is sweet,
    Whether he eats little or much;
    But the abundance of the rich will not permit him to sleep.

    Гине се багацтво через нещасливі пригоди; в його родиться син, і йому нїчо не допадеться в руки.

    There is a severe evil which I have seen under the sun:
    Riches kept for their owner to his hurt.

    Як вийшов нагим із материної утроби, таким і відходить, яким прийшов, і з усього, що придбав працею, не візьме, щоб понести в руцї своїй.

    But those riches perish through [c]misfortune;
    When he begets a son, there is nothing in his hand.

    Се ж велике лихо: яким прийшов, таким і відходь! Яка ж йому тодї користь, що завдавав собі працї на вітер?

    As he came from his mother’s womb, naked shall he return,
    To go as he came;
    And he shall take nothing from his labor
    Which he may carry away in his hand.

    А він увесь вік свій їв у потемках, у великій журбі, в досадї та прикростях!
  • 16
    And this also is a severe evil —
    Just exactly as he came, so shall he go.
    And what profit has he who has labored for the wind?

    От же що здалось менї добрим: їсти й пити та солодко вживати добра з працї своєї під сонцем через увесь час життя свого, що Бог йому дав; бо ж се доля його.

    All his days he also eats in darkness,
    And he has much sorrow and sickness and anger.
  • 18
    І коли дав кому Бог багацтво й достаток, і дозволив ними користуватись та брати з них свій пай, так се — дар Божий.
  • 18
    Here is what I have seen: It is good and fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor in which he toils under the sun all the days of his life which God gives him; for it is his [d]heritage.

    Не довго буде він памятати днї життя свого, тим то Бог і надоложив йому радощами серця його.
  • 19
    As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his [e]heritage and rejoice in his labor — this is the gift of God.
