Я чоловік, що зазнав горя від палицї гнїву його;

Jeremiah Shares Israel’s Affliction

I am the man who has seen affliction
Because of the rod of His wrath.

2

Він повів мене й увів у пітьму, а не в сьвітло.

2

He has driven me and made me walk
In darkness and not in light.

3

Так, він обернувся проти мене, і день у день простягає на мене руку свою;

3

Surely against me He has turned His hand
Repeatedly all the day.

4

Поморщив тїло моє й кожу мою, та потер костї мої;

4

He has caused my flesh and my skin to waste away,
He has broken my bones.

5

Обгородив мене (нещастєм), обложив горем і нуждою;

5

He has besieged and encompassed me with bitterness and hardship.

6

Він посадив мене в темне місце, як тих, що давно померли;

6

In dark places He has made me dwell,
Like those who have long been dead.

7

Наче муром, обвів мене, щоб я не вийшов, закував у тяжкі кайдани;

7

He has walled me in so that I cannot go out;
He has made my chain heavy.

8

Як я прошу, як благаю, він одпихає молитву твою;

8

Even when I cry out and call for help,
He shuts out my prayer.

9

Дороги мої він каміннєм закидав, попсував стежки мої.

9

He has blocked my ways with hewn stone;
He has made my paths crooked.

10

Став проти мене, наче ведмедем у засїдцї, — левом у сховищу;

10

He is to me like a bear lying in wait,
Like a lion in secret places.

11

Поперевертав дороги мої, розірвав мене, й у нїщо обернув;

11

He has turned aside my ways and torn me to pieces;
He has made me desolate.

12

Напяв лука свого й поставив мене за мету стрілам своїм;

12

He bent His bow
And set me as a target for the arrow.

13

Послав у нирки мої стріли з сагайдака свого.

13

He made the arrows of His quiver
To enter into my inward parts.

14

Я стався сьміховищем усьому народові мому, повсякдневною присьпівкою їх.

14

I have become a laughingstock to all my people,
Their mocking song all the day.

15

До переситу нагодовав мене гіркотою, напоїв полином;

15

He has filled me with bitterness,
He has made me drunk with wormwood.

16

Покрушив каміннєм зуби мої, покрив мене попелом.

16

He has broken my teeth with gravel;
He has made me cower in the dust.

17

Покинув супокій душу мою; я вже й забув про днї добрі,

17

My soul has been rejected from peace;
I have forgotten happiness.

18

І сказав я собі: погасла сила моя й надїя моя на Господа.

18

So I say, “My strength has perished,
And so has my hope from the LORD.”

19

О, спогадай про мою муку й нужду, про полин і жовч!

19

Hope of Relief in God’s Mercy

Remember my affliction and my wandering, the wormwood and bitterness.

20

Глибоко вбилось усе те в память мою й душа моя в менї заниває.

20

Surely my soul remembers
And is bowed down within me.

21

Та я так відповідаю серцю мойму, та й тому вповаю:

21

This I recall to my mind,
Therefore I have hope.

22

Ізза милосердя Господнього ми не вигинули, бо милосердє його не вичерпується.

22

The LORD’S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail.

23

Що ранок воно одновляється, велика бо вірність твоя!

23

They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.

24

Господь пай мій, говорить собі душа моя, то ж і буду я вповати на него.

24

“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul,
“Therefore I have hope in Him.”

25

Благий Господь до тих, хто надїється на його, — до душі, що його шукає.

25

The LORD is good to those who wait for Him,
To the person who seeks Him.

26

Добре тому, хто без нарікання дожидає рятунку від Господа.

26

It is good that he waits silently
For the salvation of the LORD.

27

Благо людинї, що змалку несе ярмо (закону Господнього);

27

It is good for a man that he should bear
The yoke in his youth.

28

(що) Седить на самотї й мовчить, бо він (Бог) наложив се ярмо на його;

28

Let him sit alone and be silent
Since He has laid it on him.

29

А він нахиляє уста свої в порох, та й думає: може бути, ще є надїя;

29

Let him put his mouth in the dust,
Perhaps there is hope.

30

Хто надставляє бючому свою щоку й приймає, хоч би й до переситу зневагу;

30

Let him give his cheek to the smiter,
Let him be filled with reproach.

31

Бо не на віки Господь покидає;

31

For the Lord will not reject forever,

32

Та хоч і пішле злиднї, то й помилує по великій добротї своїй;

32

For if He causes grief,
Then He will have compassion
According to His abundant lovingkindness.

33

Не по свойму бо серцї карає він і посиляє смуток на дїтей людських,

33

For He does not afflict willingly
Or grieve the sons of men.

34

А тодї, як вони під ноги беруть безсильних на землї,

34

To crush under His feet
All the prisoners of the land,

35

Як несправедливо судять ближнього перед очима Всевишнього,

35

To deprive a man of justice
In the presence of the Most High,

36

Як притискають другого в його дїлах; бо хиба ж Господь сього не бачить?

36

To defraud a man in his lawsuit —
Of these things the Lord does not approve.

37

Хто ж бо сьміє сказати: І таке часом дїється, що Господь не повелїває!

37

Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass,
Unless the Lord has commanded it?

38

Хиба ж не з уст (не з приказу) Всевишнього виходить нужда й щастє?

38

Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
That both good and ill go forth?

39

Чом же нарікає живуща людина? Нехай би нарікала на свої гріхи.

39

Why should any living mortal, or any man,
Offer complaint in view of his sins?

40

Розпитуймо й розвідуймо наші дороги та й обернїмось до Господа;

40

Let us examine and probe our ways,
And let us return to the LORD.

41

Здіймімо серце й руки наші до Бога на небі (й говорімо):

41

We lift up our heart and hands
Toward God in heaven;

42

Ми одпали, ми непокірливі, тим то й не пощадив єси нас;

42

We have transgressed and rebelled,
You have not pardoned.

43

Ти оболїк себе гнївом і гнав та побивав нас без ощадку;

43

You have covered Yourself with anger
And pursued us;
You have slain and have not spared.

44

Ти закрив себе хмарою (гріхів наших), щоб не доходила до тебе молитва наша;

44

You have covered Yourself with a cloud
So that no prayer can pass through.

45

Соромом і гидотою зробив нас єси серед народів.

45

You have made us mere offscouring and refuse
In the midst of the peoples.

46

Отворили на нас роти свої всї вороги наші.

46

All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.

47

Страх і яма, опустошеннє й погибель — се наша доля.

47

Panic and pitfall have befallen us,
Devastation and destruction;

48

Потоки вод проливає око моє над погибелю дочки народу мого.

48

My eyes run down with streams of water
Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.

49

Без упину виливає сльози око моє, та нема пільги,

49

My eyes pour down unceasingly,
Without stopping,

50

Покіль із неба Господь не спогляне та не побачить.

50

Until the LORD looks down
And sees from heaven.

51

Око моє наповнює смутком душу мою, споглядаючи на всї дочки міста мого.

51

My eyes bring pain to my soul
Because of all the daughters of my city.

52

Всякими способами намагались зловити мене, мов ту пташину, вороги мої, без усякої причини;

52

My enemies without cause
Hunted me down like a bird;

53

Вкинули мене живцем у яму й прикидали каміннєм.

53

They have silenced me in the pit
And have placed a stone on me.

54

Води знялися аж до голови в мене, я сказав собі: Пропав я!

54

Waters flowed over my head;
I said, “I am cut off!”

55

І призивав я імя твоє, Господи, з ями глубокої:

55

I called on Your name, O LORD,
Out of the lowest pit.

56

Почуй голос мій; не затулюй уха твого від мого зітхання, від благання мого!

56

You have heard my voice,
“Do not hide Your ear from my prayer for relief,
From my cry for help.”

57

Так, ти зближувався, як я молився до тебе, й казав менї: Не бійся!

57

You drew near when I called on You;
You said, “Do not fear!”

58

Ти боронив, Господи, мою справу; вибавляв життє моє.

58

O Lord, You have pleaded my soul’s cause;
You have redeemed my life.

59

Ти, Господи, й тепер бачиш кривду мою; розсуди ж справу мою!

59

O LORD, You have seen my oppression;
Judge my case.

60

Ти бачиш ненависть і те, що вони проти мене замишляють.

60

You have seen all their vengeance,
All their schemes against me.

61

Ти чуєш, Господи, їх наругу, — всї їх підходи під мене,

61

You have heard their reproach, O LORD,
All their schemes against me.

62

(чуєш) Бесїди противників моїх і безнастанні хитрощі їх проти мене.

62

The lips of my assailants and their whispering
Are against me all day long.

63

Глянь, чи вони седять, чи встають, — про мене в них все — глумлива пісня.

63

Look on their sitting and their rising;
I am their mocking song.

64

О, ти певно відплатиш їм, Господи, по учинкам рук їх;

64

You will recompense them, O LORD,
According to the work of their hands.

65

Заслїпиш їх серця і проклін твій упаде на них;

65

You will give them hardness of heart,
Your curse will be on them.

66

Гонити меш їх, Господи, гнївом, і викорениш їх ізпід неба!

66

You will pursue them in anger and destroy them
From under the heavens of the LORD!
