    І кликнув опісля менї в уші грімким голосом: Наближуються каранники міста, кожен із знарядом у руцї до вбивання.

    The Wicked Are Slain

    Then He called out in my hearing with a loud voice, saying, “Let those who have charge over the city draw near, each with a [a]deadly weapon in his hand.”

    І се прийшло шестеро від нагірніх ворот, що на північ, а в кожного в руцї його знаряд до вбивання; між ними ж один, одягнений у лняну одежу, а при боцї в його писарський прибір; і прийшли та й постали коло мідяного жертівника.

    And suddenly six men came from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with his [b]battle-ax in his hand. One man among them was clothed with linen and had a writer’s inkhorn [c]at his side. They went in and stood beside the bronze altar.

    І зіступила слава Бога Ізрайлевого з того херувима, що на йому була, до порога дому. І прикликав він того, що був у лняному одязї, що при боцї в його був писарський прилад.

    Now the glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub, where it had been, to the threshold of the [d]temple. And He called to the man clothed with linen, who had the writer’s inkhorn at his side;

    І сказав йому Господь: Пройди серединою по містї, по Ерусалиму, та й поклади знак на чолах у людей, що зітхають і сумують задля всїх гидот, які дїються в городї.

    and the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within it.”

    А другим сказав — так, що я чув: Ійдїте позад його городом та й убивайте; нехай не милує око ваше й не щадить;

    To the others He said in my [e]hearing, “Go after him through the city and kill;[f] do not let your eye spare, nor have any pity.

    І старого й молодика, дївицю, дитину й жіноцтво вбивайте на смерть; із тих же, на кому положено знак, не займайте нїкого, а починайте од моєї сьвятинї. І почали вони від тих мужів, що були перед храмом.

    Utterly[g] slay old and young men, maidens and little children and women; but do not come near anyone on whom is the mark; and begin at My sanctuary.” So they began with the elders who were before the [h]temple.

    І сказав до них: Опоганьте храм, закидайте подвірря побитими, а потім вийдете. І вийшли вони та й почали вбивати по городу.

    Then He said to them, “Defile the [i]temple, and fill the courts with the slain. Go out!” And they went out and killed in the city.

    І як вони їх повбивали, а я зостався, впав я на лице й промовив: Ой Господи Боже! чи ти ж бо вигубиш оце ввесь останок Ізраїля, виливаючи гнїв твій на Ерусалим?

    So it was, that while they were killing them, I was left alone; and I fell on my face and cried out, and said, “Ah, Lord God! Will You destroy all the remnant of Israel in pouring out Your fury on Jerusalem?”

    І сказав він менї: Безбожність дому Ізрайлевого й Юдиного велика, аж надто велика; ся країна повна крівавих гріхів, город же переповнений несправедливостю, бо вони кажуть: Покинув Господь сю країну, не бачить Господь.

    Then He said to me, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great, and the land is full of bloodshed, and the city full of perversity; for they say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land, and the Lord does not see!’

    Оце ж і моє око не пощадить і я не помилую; оберну поступки їх на їх же голову.

    And as for Me also, My eye will neither spare, nor will I have pity, but I will recompense their deeds on their own head.”

    Аж ось той, що в лняній одежі, той, що при боцї в його писарські приряди, принїс звістку й сказав: Зробив я так, як ти менї приказав.

    Just then, the man clothed with linen, who had the inkhorn at his side, reported back and said, “I have done as You commanded me.”
