І була́ вся земля — одна мова та слова́ одні.
Universal Language, Babel, Confusion
Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words.
Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words.
І сталось, як руша́ли зо Сходу вони, то в Шинеарському краї рівнину знайшли, і оселилися там.
It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
І сказали вони один о́дному: „Ану, наробімо цегли, і добре її випалімо!“ І сталася цегла для них замість каменя, а смола земляна́ була їм за вапно.
They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.
І сказали вони: „Тож місто збудуймо собі, та башту, а вершина її аж до неба. І вчинімо для себе ймення, щоб ми не розпоро́шилися по поверхні всієї землі“.
They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
І зійшов Господь, щоб побачити місто та башту, що людські сини будували її.
The LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
І промовив Господь: „Один це наро́д, і мова одна для всіх них, а це ось початок їх праці. Не буде тепер нічого для них неможливого, що вони замишляли чинити.
The LORD said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.
Тож зійдімо, і змішаймо там їхні мови, щоб не розуміли вони мови один о́дного“.
“Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
І розпоро́шив їх звідти Господь по поверхні всієї землі, — і вони перестали будувати те місто.
So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.
І тому то на́звано ймення йому: Вавилон, бо там помішав Господь мову всієї землі. І розпорошив їх звідти Господь по поверхні всієї землі.
Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth.
Оце нащадки Симові: Сим був віку ста літ, та й породив Арпахшада, два роки по потопі.
Descendants of Shem
These are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old, and became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood;
І жив Сим по тому, як породив Арпахшада, п'ять сотень літ. І породив він синів і дочок.
and Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.
А Арпахшад жив тридцять і п'ять літ, та й породив він Шелаха.
Arpachshad lived thirty-five years, and became the father of Shelah;
І жив Арпахшад по тому, як породив він Шелаха, чотири сотні літ та три роки. І породив він синів та дочок.
and Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters.
Шелах же жив тридцять літ, та й породив він Евера.
Shelah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber;
І жив Шелах по тому, як породив він Евера, чотири сотні літ і три роки. І породив він синів та дочок.
and Shelah lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.
Евер же жив тридцять літ і чотири, та й породив він Пелеґа.
Eber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg;
І жив Евер по тому, як породив він Пелеґа, чотири сотні літ і тридцять літ. І породив він синів та дочок.
and Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters.
Пелеґ же жив тридцять літ, та й породив Реу.
Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu;
І жив Пелеґ по тому, як породив Реу, дві сотні літ і дев'ять літ. І породив він синів та дочок.
and Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after he became the father of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.
А Реу жив тридцять і два роки, та й породив Серуґа.
Reu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug;
І жив Реу по тому, як породив Серуґа, дві сотні літ і сім літ. І породив він синів та дочок.
and Reu lived two hundred and seven years after he became the father of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters.
А Серуґ жив тридцять літ, та й породив Нахора.
Serug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nahor;
І жив Серуґ по тому, як породив Нахора, дві сотні літ. І породив він синів та дочок.
and Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters.
А Нахор жив двадцять літ і дев'ять, та й породив він Тераха.
Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terah;
І жив Нахор по тому, як породив він Тераха, сотню літ і дев'ятнадцять літ. І породив він синів та дочок.
and Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after he became the father of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters.
Терах же жив сімдесят літ, та й породив Аврама, і Нахора, і Гарана.
Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.
А оце нащадки Терахові: Терах породив Аврама, і Нахора, і Гарана. А Гаран породив Лота.
Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran; and Haran became the father of Lot.
Гаран же помер за життя свого батька, у краї свого народження, в Урі халдейському.
Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
І побрали Аврам та Нахор для себе жінок. Ім'я Аврамовій жінці Сара, а ймення Нахоровій жінці Мілка, дочка Гарана, Мілчиного батька і батька Їски.
Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.
І взяв Терах Аврама, сина свого, і Лота, сина Таранового, сина свого сина, і Сару, невістку свою, жінку Аврама, свого сина, та й ви́йшов з ними з Уру халдейського, щоб піти до краю ханаанського. І прийшли вони аж до Харану, та й там оселилися.
Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there.
