Але змій був хитріший над усю польову звірину, яку Господь Бог учинив. І сказав він до жінки: „Чи Бог наказав: Не їжте з усякого дерева ра́ю?“

The Temptation and Fall of Man

Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

2

І відповіла жінка змієві: „З плодів дерева раю ми можемо їсти,

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;

3

але з плодів дерева, що в сере́дині ра́ю, — Бог сказав: „Не їжте із нього, і не доторкайтесь до нього, — щоб вам не померти“.

3

but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”

4

І сказав змій до жінки: „Умерти — не вмрете!

Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

5

Бо відає Бог, що дня того, коли будете з нього ви їсти, ваші очі розкриються, і станете ви, немов Боги, знаючи добро й зло“.

For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

6

І побачила жінка, що дерево добре на їжу, і принадне для очей, і пожадане дерево, щоб набути знання. І взяла з його плоду, та й з'їла, і разом дала теж чоловікові своєму, — і він з'їв.

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was [a]pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

І розкрилися очі в обох них, і пізнали, що на́гі вони. І зшили вони фіґові листя, і зробили опаски собі.

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves [b]coverings.

8

І почули вони голос Господа Бога, що по ра́ю ходив, як повіяв денний холодок. І сховався Адам і його жінка від Господа Бога серед дерев раю.

And they heard the [c]sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the [d]cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

І закликав Господь Бог до Адама, і до нього сказав: „Де ти?“

Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

10

А той відповів: „Почув я Твій голос у раю́ — і злякався, бо наги́й я, — і сховався“.

So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

11

І промовив Господь: „Хто сказав тобі, що ти нагий? Чи ти не їв з того дерева, що Я звелів був тобі, щоб ти з нього не їв?“

And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

12

А Адам відказав: „Жінка, що дав Ти її, щоб зо мною була, вона подала мені з того дерева, — і я їв“.

Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

13

Тоді Господь Бог промовив до жінки: „Що́ це ти наробила?“ А жінка сказала: „Змій спокусив мене, — і я їла“.

And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14

І до змія сказав Господь Бог: „3а те, що зробив ти оце, то ти проклятіший над усю худобу, і над усю звірину польову! На своїм череві будеш плазувати, і порох ти їстимеш у всі дні свойо́го життя.

So the Lord God said to the serpent:
“Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.

15

І Я покладу ворожнечу між тобою й між жінкою, між насінням твоїм і насінням її. Воно зітре тобі голову, а ти будеш жали́ти його в п'яту“.

And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”

16

До жінки промовив: „Помножуючи, помножу терпіння твої та болі вагітности твоєї. Ти в муках родитимеш діти, і до мужа твого пожада́ння твоє, — а він буде панувати над тобою“.

To the woman He said:
“I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
In pain you shall bring forth children;
Your desire shall be [e]for your husband,
And he shall rule over you.”

17

І до Адама сказав Він: „За те, що ти послу́хав голосу жінки своєї та їв з того дерева, що Я наказав був тобі, говорячи: „Від нього не їж“, — прокля́та через тебе земля! Ти в скорботі будеш їсти від неї всі дні свойо́го життя.

Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:
“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.

18

Тернину й осо́т вона буде родити тобі, і ти будеш їсти траву польову.

18

Both thorns and thistles it shall [f]bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.

19

У поті свойо́го лиця ти їстимеш хліб, аж поки не вернешся в землю, бо з неї ти взятий. Бо ти порох, — і до пороху вернешся“.

19

In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.”

20

І назвав Ада́м ім'я своїй жінці: Єва, бо вона була мати всього живого.

20

And Adam called his wife’s name Eve,[g] because she was the mother of all living.

21

І зробив Господь Бог Адамові та жінці його одежу шкуряну́ — і зодягнув їх.

21

Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.

22

І сказав Господь Бог: „Ось став чоловік, немов один із Нас, щоб знати добро й зло. А тепер коли б не простяг він своєї руки, і не взяв з дерева життя, і щоб він не з'їв, — і не жив повік віку“.

Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever” —

23

І вислав його Господь Бог із еденського раю, щоб порати землю, з якої узятий він був.

therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.

24

І вигнав Господь Бог Адама. А на схід від еденського раю поставив Херувима і меча полум'яного, який оберта́вся навколо, щоб стерегти дорогу до дерева життя.

24

So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
