New Living Translation
І встав Лаван рано вранці, і поцілував онуків своїх, і дочок своїх, — і поблагословив їх. І пішов, та й вернувся Лаван до місця свого.
А Яків пішов на дорогу свою. І спіткали його Божі Анголи́.
І Яків сказав, коли їх побачив: „Це Божий табір!“ І він назвав ім'я́ тому місцю: Маханаїм.
Jacob Sends Gifts to Esau
Then Jacob sent messengers ahead to his brother, Esau, who was living in the region of Seir in the land of Edom.
І послав Яків послів перед собою до Ісава, брата свого, до землі Сеїр, до краю едомського.
He told them, “Give this message to my master Esau: ‘Humble greetings from your servant Jacob. Until now I have been living with Uncle Laban,
І наказав їм, говорячи: „Скажіть так моєму панові Ісавові: Так сказав раб твій Яків: Я мешкав з Лаваном, і заде́ржався аж дотепер.
and now I own cattle, donkeys, flocks of sheep and goats, and many servants, both men and women. I have sent these messengers to inform my lord of my coming, hoping that you will be friendly to me.’”
І маю я вола та осла, і отару, і раба, і невільницю. І я послав розказати панові моєму, щоб знайти милість в очах твоїх“.
After delivering the message, the messengers returned to Jacob and reported, “We met your brother, Esau, and he is already on his way to meet you — with an army of 400 men!”
І вернулися посли до Якова, та й сказали: „Ми прийшли були до брата твого до Ісава, а він також іде назустріч тобі, і чотири сотні людей з ним.“
Jacob was terrified at the news. He divided his household, along with the flocks and herds and camels, into two groups.
І Яків сильно злякався, і був затурбований. І він поділив наро́д, що був з ним, і дрібну та велику худобу, і верблюди на два табори.
He thought, “If Esau meets one group and attacks it, perhaps the other group can escape.”
І сказав: „Коли при́йде Ісав до табору одного, і розі́б'є його, то вціліє позосталий табір“.
Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my grandfather Abraham, and God of my father, Isaac — O LORD, you told me, ‘Return to your own land and to your relatives.’ And you promised me, ‘I will treat you kindly.’
І Яків промовив: „Боже батька мого Авраама, і Боже батька мого Ісака, Господи, що сказав Ти мені: „Вернися до Краю свого, і до місця свого народження, і Я зроблю́ тобі добре“.
I am not worthy of all the unfailing love and faithfulness you have shown to me, your servant. When I left home and crossed the Jordan River, I owned nothing except a walking stick. Now my household fills two large camps!
Я не вартий усіх отих милостей, і всієї вірности, яку Ти чинив був Своєму рабові, бо з самою своєю палицею перейшов я був цей Йорда́н, а тепер я стався на два табори.
O LORD, please rescue me from the hand of my brother, Esau. I am afraid that he is coming to attack me, along with my wives and children.
Збережи ж мене від руки мого брата, від руки Ісава, бо боюсь я його, щоб він не прийшов та не побив мене і матері з дітьми.
But you promised me, ‘I will surely treat you kindly, and I will multiply your descendants until they become as numerous as the sands along the seashore — too many to count.’”
А Ти ж був сказав: „Учинити добро — учиню я з тобою добро; а наща́дки твої́ покладу, як той мо́рський пісок, що його не злічити через безліч“.
Jacob stayed where he was for the night. Then he selected these gifts from his possessions to present to his brother, Esau:
І він переночував там тієї ночі, і взяв із того, що́ під руку прийшло, дар для Ісава, брата свого:
200 female goats, 20 male goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams,
кіз двісті, і козлів двадцятеро, овець двісті, і баранів двадцятеро,
30 female camels with their young, 40 cows, 10 bulls, 20 female donkeys, and 10 male donkeys.
верблюдиць дійних та їх жереб'ят тридцятеро, корів сорок, а биків десятеро, ослиць двадцятеро, а ослят десятеро.
He divided these animals into herds and assigned each to different servants. Then he told his servants, “Go ahead of me with the animals, but keep some distance between the herds.”
І дав до рук рабів своїх кожне стадо окремо. І сказав він до рабів своїх: „Ідіть передо мною, і позоставте відстань поміж стадом і стадом“.
He gave these instructions to the men leading the first group: “When my brother, Esau, meets you, he will ask, ‘Whose servants are you? Where are you going? Who owns these animals?’
І він наказав першому, кажучи: „Коли спіткає тебе Ісав, брат мій, і запитає тебе так: Чий ти, і куди ти йдеш, і чиє те, що перед тобою?
You must reply, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob, but they are a gift for his master Esau. Look, he is coming right behind us.’”
то скажеш: Раба твого Якова це подарунок, посланий панові моєму Ісавові. А ото й він сам за нами“.
Jacob gave the same instructions to the second and third herdsmen and to all who followed behind the herds: “You must say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.
І наказав він і другому, і третьому, також усім, що йшли за стадами, говорячи: „Таким словом будете говорити до Ісава, коли ви зна́йдете його,
And be sure to say, ‘Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.’”
Jacob thought, “I will try to appease him by sending gifts ahead of me. When I see him in person, perhaps he will be friendly to me.”

і скажете: Ось і раб твій Яків за нами, бо він сказав: Нехай я вблагаю його оцим дарунком, що йде передо мною, а потім побачу обличчя його, — може він піді́йме обличчя моє.“
So the gifts were sent on ahead, while Jacob himself spent that night in the camp.
І йшов подарунок перед ним, а він ночував тієї ночі в таборі.
Jacob Wrestles with God
During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two servant wives, and his eleven sons and crossed the Jabbok River with them.
І встав він тієї ночі, і взяв обидві жінки свої, і обидві невільниці свої та одинадцятеро дітей своїх, і перейшов брід Яббок.
After taking them to the other side, he sent over all his possessions.
І він узяв їх, і перепровадив через потік, і перепровадив те, що в нього було.
This left Jacob all alone in the camp, and a man came and wrestled with him until the dawn began to break.
І зостався Яків сам. І боровся з ним якийсь Муж, аж поки не зійшла досвітня зоря.
When the man saw that he would not win the match, he touched Jacob’s hip and wrenched it out of its socket.
І Він побачив, що не подужає його, і доторкнувся до сугло́бу стегна́ його. І звихнувся сугло́б стегна́ Якова, як він боровся з Ним.
Then the man said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking!”
But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

І промовив: „Пусти Мене, бо зійшла досвітня зоря“. А той відказав: „Не пущу́ Тебе, коли не поблагосло́виш мене“.
“What is your name?” the man asked.
He replied, “Jacob.”
He replied, “Jacob.”
І промовив до нього: „Як твоє ймення!“ Той відказав: „Яків“.
І сказав „Не Яків буде називатися вже ймення твоє, але Ізра́їль, бо ти боровся з Богом та з людьми, — і подужав“.
“Please tell me your name,” Jacob said.
“Why do you want to know my name?” the man replied. Then he blessed Jacob there.

І запитав Яків і сказав: „Скажи ж Ім'я Своє“. А Той відказав: „Пощо питаєш про Ймення Моє!“ І Він поблагословив його там.
Jacob named the place Peniel (which means “face of God”), for he said, “I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been spared.”
І назвав Яків ім'я́ того місця: Пенуїл, бо „бачив був Бога лицем у лице, та збереглася душа моя“.
