Оце о́повість про Якова. Йо́сип, віку сімнадцяти літ, пас, як юнак, отару з братами своїми, з синами Білги та з синами Зілпи, жінок батька свого. І Йо́сип доносив недобрі звістки про них до їхнього батька.
This is the history of Jacob.
Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought a bad report of them to his father.

А Ізра́їль любив Йо́сипа над усіх синів своїх, бо він був у нього сином старости. І він справив йому квітчасте вбрання́.
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors.
І бачили його браття, що їх батько полюбив його над усіх братів його, — і знена́виділи його, і не могли говорити з ним спокійно.
But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.
І снився був Йо́сипові сон, і він розпові́в своїм браттям, а вони ще збільшили нена́висть до нього.
Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more.
І сказав він до них: „Послухайте но про той сон, що снився мені.
So he said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:
А ото ми в'яжемо снопи серед поля, і ось мій сніп зачав уставати, та й став. І ось оточують ваші снопи, — та й вклоняються снопові моєму“.
There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.”
І сказали йому його браття: „Чи справді ти будеш царювати над нами, чи теж справді ти будеш панувати над нами?“ І вони збільшили ненависть до нього через сни його та через слова його.
And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.
І снився йому ще сон інший, і він оповів його братам своїм, та й сказав: „Оце снився мені ще сон, — і ось сонце та місяць та одинадцять зір вклоняються мені“.
Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.”
І він розповів це батькові своєму та браттям своїм. І докорив йому ба́тько його, та й промовив до нього: „Що́ то за сон, що снився тобі? Чи справді при́йдемо ми, я та мати твоя та брати твої, щоб уклонитися тобі до землі?“
So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?”
І заздрили йому брати його, а батько його запам'ята́в ці слова.
And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind.
І пішли брати його пасти отару свого батька в Сихем.
Joseph Sold by His Brothers
Then his brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem.

And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.”
So he said to him, “Here I am.”
So he said to him, “Here I am.”
І сказав він до нього: „Піди но, побач стан братів твоїх і стан отари, та й дай мені відповідь“. І він послав його з долини Хеврону, і той прибув до Сихему.
Then he said to him, “Please go and see if it is well with your brothers and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me.” So he sent him out of the Valley of Hebron, and he went to Shechem.
І знайшов його один чоловік, — а він ось блукає по полю. І запитав його той чоловік, кажучи: „Чого ти шукаєш?“
Now a certain man found him, and there he was, wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, “What are you seeking?”
А той відказав: „Я шукаю братів своїх. Скажи ж мені, де вони випасають?“
So he said, “I am seeking my brothers. Please tell me where they are feeding their flocks.”
І сказав той чоловік: „Вони пішли звідси, бо я чув, як казали вони: Ходімо до Дотаїну“. І пішов Йо́сип за своїми братами, і знайшов їх у Дотаїні.
And the man said, “They have departed from here, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.
А вони побачили його зда́лека, і поки він набли́зився до них, то змовлялися на нього, щоб убити його.
Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him.
І сказали вони один о́дному: „Ось іде той сновидець!
А тепер давайте вбиймо його, і вкиньмо його до однієї з ям, та й скажемо: Дикий звір з'їв його! І побачимо, що буде з його снами“.
Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!”
І почув це Руви́м, і визволив його з руки їхньої, і сказав: „Не губімо душі його!“
But Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands, and said, “Let us not kill him.”
І сказав до них Рувим: „Не проливайте крови, — киньте його до ями тієї, що в пустині, а руки́ не кладіть на нього", щоб визволити його з їхньої руки, щоб вернути його до батька його.
And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him” — that he might deliver him out of their hands, and bring him back to his father.
І сталося, коли прийшов Йо́сип до братів своїх, то вони стягнули з Йосипа вбрання його, вбрання квітчасте, що на ньому було.
So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him.
І взяли його, та й кинули його до ями, а яма та порожня була, — не було в ній води.
Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it.
І сіли вони попоїсти хліба. І звели вони очі свої та й побачили, — ось караван ізмаїлітів іде з Ґілеаду, а верблюди їхні несуть пахощі, і бальзам, і ладан, — іде він спровадити це до Єгипту.
And they sat down to eat a meal. Then they lifted their eyes and looked, and there was a company of Ishmaelites, coming from Gilead with their camels, bearing spices, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry them down to Egypt.
І сказав Юда до своїх братів: „Яка ко́ристь, що вб'ємо нашого брата, і затаїмо́ його кров?
So Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is there if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?
Давайте продамо його Ізма́їльтянам, — і рука наша нехай не буде на ньому, бо він брат нам, він наше тіло“. І послухалися брати його.
Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother and our flesh.” And his brothers listened.
І коли прохо́дили мідіяніти, купці, то витягли й підняли Йо́сипа з ями. І продали Йосипа ізмаїльтянам за двадцять срібняків, а ті повели Йосипа до Єгипту.
Then Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.
А Рувим вернувся до ями, — аж нема Йосипа в ямі! І розірвав він одежу свою...
Then Reuben returned to the pit, and indeed Joseph was not in the pit; and he tore his clothes.
І вернувся він до братів своїх, та й сказав: „Немає хло́пця! А я, —— куди я піду́?“
And he returned to his brothers and said, “The lad is no more; and I, where shall I go?”
А вони взяли Йо́сипове вбрання́, і зарізали козла, і вмочили вбрання в кров.
So they took Joseph’s tunic, killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood.
І послали вони квітчасте вбрання, і принесли до свого батька, та й сказали: „Оце ми знайшли. Пізнай но, чи це вбрання — твого сина воно, чи ні?“
Then they sent the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father and said, “We have found this. Do you know whether it is your son’s tunic or not?”
А він пізнав його та й сказав: „Вбрання мого сина... Дикий звір його з'їв... Справді розшарпаний Йо́сип!“
And he recognized it and said, “It is my son’s tunic. A wild beast has devoured him. Without doubt Joseph is torn to pieces.”
І роздер Яків одіж свою, і зодягнув вере́тище на сте́гна свої, і багато днів справляв жалобу по синові своє́му...
Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days.
І зачали всі сини його та всі дочки його потіша́ти його. Але він не міг утішитися, та й сказав: „У жало́бі зійду я до сина мого до шеолу“. І плакав за ним його ба́тько.
And all his sons and all his daughters arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, “For I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning.” Thus his father wept for him.
