А Йо́сип був відведений до Єгипту. І купив його Потіфа́р, царедворець фараонів, начальник царсько́ї сторожі, муж єги́птянин, з руки ізмаїльтян, що звели його туди.
Joseph’s Success in Egypt
Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.

І був Госпо́дь з Йо́сипом, а він став чоловіком, що мав щастя. І пробува́в він у домі свого пана єги́птянина.
The LORD was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.
І побачив його пан, що Господь з ним, і що в усьому, що він робить, Госпо́дь щастить у руці його.
Now his master saw that the LORD was with him and how the LORD caused all that he did to prosper in his hand.
І Йо́сип знайшов милість в очах його, і служив йому. А той призна́чив його над домом своїм, і все, що мав, віддав в його руку.
So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he owned he put in his charge.
І сталося, — відко́ли він призна́чив його в домі своїм, і над усім, що він мав, то поблагословив Господь дім єгиптянина через Йосипа. І було благослове́ння Господнє в усьому, що він мав, — у домі й на полі.
It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Joseph; thus the LORD’S blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field.
І він позоставив усе, що мав, у руці Йо́сиповій. І не знав він при ньому нічого, окрім хліба, що їв. А Йо́сип був гарного стану та вродливого вигляду.
So he left everything he owned in Joseph’s charge; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate.
Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.

І сталося по тих пригодах, і звела́ свої очі на Йосипа жінка пана його. І сказала вона: „Ляж зо мною!“
It came about after these events that his master’s wife looked with desire at Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.”
А він відмовився, і сказав до жінки пана свого: „Тож пан мій не знає при мені нічого у домі, а все, що його, він дав у мою руку.
But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put all that he owns in my charge.
Нема більшого в цім домі від мене, і він не стримав від мене нічого, хібащо тебе, — бо ти жінка його. Як же я вчиню це велике зло, і згрішу перед Богом?“
“There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?”
І сталося, що вона день-у-день говорила Йо́сипові, а він не слухав її, щоб лягти при ній і бути з нею.
As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her.
І сталося одного дня, і прийшов він додому робити діло своє, а там у домі не було́ нікого з людей дому.
Now it happened one day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the household was there inside.
І схопи́ла вона його за одежу його, кажучи: „Лягай же зо мною!“ А він позоставив свою одежу в її руці, та й утік, і вибіг надвір.
She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” And he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside.
І сталося, як побачила вона, що він позоставив свою одежу в її руці та й утік надвір,
When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside,
то покликала людей свого дому, та й сказала їм, говорячи: „Дивіться, — він припровадив нам якогось єврея, щоб той забавлявся нами! Він прийшов був до мене, щоб покластись зо мною, та я закричала сильним голосом.
she called to the men of her household and said to them, “See, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to make sport of us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I screamed.
І сталося, як почув він, що я підняла свій голос і закричала, то позоставив одежу свою в мене, та й утік, і вибіг надвір.
“When he heard that I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled and went outside.”
І я поклала його одежу при собі аж до прихо́ду пана його до свого дому“.
So she left his garment beside her until his master came home.
І вона переказала йому цими словами, говорячи: „До мене прийшов був оцей раб єврей, що ти його привів до нас, щоб забавлятися мною.
Then she spoke to him with these words, “The Hebrew slave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to make sport of me;
І сталося, як підняла я свій голос і закричала, то він позоставив свою одежу при мені, та й утік надвір“.
and as I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside.”
І сталося, як почув пан його слова своєї жінки, що оповідала йому, кажучи: „Отакі то речі вчинив мені твій раб“, то запалився гнів його.
Joseph Imprisoned
Now when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “This is what your slave did to me,” his anger burned.
І взяв його Йо́сипів пан, та й віддав його до дому в'язни́чного, до місця, де були ув'я́знені царські́ в'язні. І пробува́в він там у тім домі в'язничнім.
So Joseph’s master took him and put him into the jail, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined; and he was there in the jail.
А Господь був із Йосипом, і прихилив до нього милосердя, та дав йому милість в очах начальника в'язничного дому.
But the LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer.
І начальник в'язничного дому дав у руку Йосипа всіх в'язнів, що були в домі в'язничнім, і все, що́ там робили, робив він.
The chief jailer committed to Joseph’s charge all the prisoners who were in the jail; so that whatever was done there, he was responsible for it.
