Then David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.”
So David sent by the hand of his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the people of Ammon.

А аммонітські князі сказали до пана свого Гануна: „Чи Давид шанує батька твого́ в оча́х твоїх тим, що послав тобі потіши́телів? Чи ж Давид послав до тебе своїх слуг не на те, щоб оглянули місто та щоб його ви́відати, а потім зни́щити його?“
And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Has David not rather sent his servants to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?”
І взяв Гану́н Давидових слуг, та й оголив половину їхньої бороди́, та обрізав їхню одежу на полови́ну, аж до сиді́ння їх, та й відпусти́в їх.
Therefore Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off half of their beards, cut off their garments in the middle, at their buttocks, and sent them away.
І доне́сли про це Давидові, а він послав назу́стріч їм, бо ті му́жі були дуже осоро́млені. І цар їм сказав: „Сидіть в Єрихоні, аж поки відросте́ вам борода́, потім пове́рнетесь“.
І побачили аммоні́тяни, що вони зненави́джені в Давида. І аммонітяни послали й найняли́ Арам-Бет-Рехову й Арам-Цови, двадцять тисяч піхоти́нців, та царя Маахи, тисячу чоловіка, і тов'ян дванадцять тисяч чоловіка.
When the people of Ammon saw that they had made themselves repulsive to David, the people of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth Rehob and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand foot soldiers; and from the king of Maacah one thousand men, and from Ish-Tob twelve thousand men.
А коли Давид прочу́в про це, то послав Йоава та все лица́рське військо.
Now when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men.
І повихо́дили аммоні́тяни, і встанови́лися до бо́ю при вході до брами. А Арам-Цова, і Рехов, і Тов'янин, і Мааха, — вони самі були на полі.
Then the people of Ammon came out and put themselves in battle array at the entrance of the gate. And the Syrians of Zoba, Beth Rehob, Ish-Tob, and Maacah were by themselves in the field.
І побачив Йоа́в, що бойови́й фронт звернений на нього спе́реду та поза́ду, то вибрав Ізраїлевих ви́браних, та й установи́в їх навпро́ти Ара́ма.
When Joab saw that the battle line was against him before and behind, he chose some of Israel’s best and put them in battle array against the Syrians.
А решту наро́ду дав під руку свого брата Авшая, і встановив навпроти аммонітян,
And the rest of the people he put under the command of Abishai his brother, that he might set them in battle array against the people of Ammon.
і сказав: „Якщо Ара́м бу́де сильніший від мене, то будеш мені на поміч, а якщо аммонітяни бу́дуть сильніші від те́бе, то я піду́ допомага́ти тобі.
Then he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you.
Будь му́жній, і станьмо міцно за наро́д наш та за міста нашого Бога, а Госпо́дь нехай зро́бить, що добре в оча́х Його!“
Be of good courage, and let us be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. And may the Lord do what is good in His sight.”
А коли Йоав та народ, що був із ним, підійшли́ на бій з Арамом, то ті повтіка́ли перед ним.
So Joab and the people who were with him drew near for the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him.
А аммонітяни побачили, що втік Арам, то й вони повтікали перед Авішаєм, і ввійшли до міста. І верну́вся Йоав від аммонітян і ввійшов до Єрусалиму.
When the people of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fleeing, they also fled before Abishai, and entered the city. So Joab returned from the people of Ammon and went to Jerusalem.
А коли побачив Арам, що він побитий Ізраїлем, то вони позбиралися ра́зом.
When the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered together.
І послав Гадад'езер, і вивів Арама, що з другого боку Річки, і ввійшли вони до Гела́му. А Шовах, провідни́к Гадад'езерового ві́йська, був перед ними.
І було́ доне́сено Давидові, і він зібрав усього Ізраїля, і перейшов Йордан, та прийшов до Геламу. А Арам установився навпроти Давида, і воював із ним.
When it was told David, he gathered all Israel, crossed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in battle array against David and fought with him.
І побіг Арам перед Ізраїлем, а Давид повбивав з Араму сім сотень колесни́ць та сорок тисяч верхівці́в. І вбив він Шоваха, зверхника ві́йська його, і той там помер.
Then the Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven hundred charioteers and forty thousand horsemen of the Syrians, and struck Shobach the commander of their army, who died there.
А коли всі царі, підле́глі Гадад'езера, побачили, що вони побиті Ізраїлем, то замири́лися з Ізраїлем, і служили йому. І Арам уже боявся допомагати аммоні́тянам.
