І сталося по ро́ку, у час ви́ходу царів на війну, то послав Давид Йоава й своїх слуг із ним, та всього Ізраїля, і вони ви́губили аммоні́тян й облягли Раббу́. А Давид сидів в Єрусалимі.

David, Bathsheba, and Uriah

It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.

І сталося надвечір, і встав Давид із ло́жа свого, і прохо́джувався на даху́ царсько́го дому. І побачив він із да́ху жінку, що купалася. А та жінка була дуже вродли́ва.

Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold.

І послав Давид, і запитався про ту жінку. А посланий сказав: „Таж то Вірсаві́я, Еліямова дочка, жінка хітте́янина Урі́ї!“

So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not [a]Bathsheba, the daughter of [b]Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”

I послав Давид посланців, і взяв її. І вона прийшла до нього, і він поклався з нею. А вона очистилася з нечи́стости своєї, і вернулася до свого дому.

Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house.

І завагітні́ла та жінка. І послала вона, і доне́сла Давидові й сказала: „Я завагітні́ла!“

And the woman conceived; so she sent and told David, and said, “I am with child.”

А Давид послав до Йоава: „Пошли мені хітте́янина Урі́ю“. І Йоав послав Урі́ю до Давида.

Then David sent to Joab, saying, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David.

7

І прийшов Урі́я до нього, а Давид запитався про стан Йоава, і про стан народу, і про стан війни́.

When Uriah had come to him, David asked how Joab was doing, and how the people were doing, and how the war prospered.

8

І сказав Давид до Урії: „Іди до свого дому та обмий свої но́ги“. І вийшов Урі́я з царсько́го дому, а за ним поне́сли гости́нця царсько́го.

And David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” So Uriah departed from the king’s house, and a gift of food from the king followed him.

Та Урія спав при вході до царсько́го дому з усіма слу́гами пана свого́, а до свого дому не пішов.

But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house.

І доне́сли Давидові, говорячи: „Урі́я не пішов до дому свого́“. І сказав Давид до Урії: „Чи ж не з дороги ти прихо́диш? Чому́ ти не пішов до свого дому?“

So when they told David, saying, “Uriah did not go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Did you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?”

І сказав Урія до Давида: „Ковчег і Ізраїль та Юда сидять у шатра́х, а пан мій Йоав та раби мого пана табору́ють на голому полі. А я піду́ до свого дому, щоб їсти й пити та лежати зо своєю жінкою? Клянуся життям твоїм та життям душі твоєї, що не зроблю я такої речі!“

And Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open fields. Shall I then go to my house to eat and drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.”

І сказав Давид до Урії: „Позоста́нься тут і сьогодні, а взавтра я відпущу́ тебе“. І позостава́вся Урія в Єрусалимі того дня та дня другого.

Then David said to Uriah, “Wait here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next.

I покликав його Давид, і той їв та пив перед ним, а він підпоїв його. І вийшов він увечорі, щоб покла́стися на ло́жі своїм ра́зом зо слу́гами пана свого, а до дому свого не пішов.

Now when David called him, he ate and drank before him; and he made him drunk. And at evening he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house.

14

І сталося ра́нком, і написав Давид листа до Йоава, і послав через Урі́ю.

In the morning it happened that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

15

А в листі тому́ він написав так: „Поставте Урію напе́реді найтяжчого бо́ю, і відступі́те від нього, щоб він був уда́рений, і помер“.

And he wrote in the letter, saying, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the [c]hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck down and die.”

16

І сталося, коли Йоав обло́жував місто, то поставив Урію на те місце, про яке знав, що там хоробрі мужі.

So it was, while Joab besieged the city, that he assigned Uriah to a place where he knew there were valiant men.

17

І вийшли люди того міста, і воювали з Йоавом, — і впали дехто з наро́ду, із Давидових слуг, і повмирали, також хітте́янин Урі́я.

Then the men of the city came out and fought with Joab. And some of the people of the servants of David fell; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

18

І послав Йоав, і доніс Давидові про всі справи того бо́ю.

Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war,

19

І наказав він послові, говорячи: „Як покінчи́ш ти оповіда́ти цареві про всі справи того бо́ю,

19

and charged the messenger, saying, “When you have finished telling the matters of the war to the king,

20

і буде, якщо ти розгніваєш царя, і він скаже тобі: „Чого ви так близько підійшли до міста воювати? Чи ви не знали, що бу́дуть кидати на вас з-над муру?

20

if it happens that the king’s wrath rises, and he says to you: ‘Why did you approach so near to the city when you fought? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall?

21

Хто забив був Авімелеха, Єруббешетового сина? Чи не жінка ки́нула на нього горі́шнього ка́меня від жо́рен з муру, і він помер у Тевеці? Чого ви близько підійшли до муру?“ То ти скажеш: Помер також хітте́янин Урі́я“.

Who struck Abimelech the son of [d]Jerubbesheth? Was it not a woman who cast a piece of a millstone on him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you go near the wall?’ — then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.’ ”

І пішов посол і прийшов, і доніс Давидові все, що послав був Йоав.

So the messenger went, and came and told David all that Joab had sent by him.

23

І сказав посол Давидові: „Вони стали сильніші за нас, і вийшли проти нас на поле, та ми були переможцями над ними аж до входу в бра́му.

23

And the messenger said to David, “Surely the men prevailed against us and came out to us in the field; then we drove them back as far as the entrance of the gate.

24

А стрільці́ стріляли на твоїх рабів з муру, і померли дехто з царе́вих рабів, а також помер твій раб хітте́янин Урі́я“.

24

The archers shot from the wall at your servants; and some of the king’s servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.”

25

І сказав Давид до посла́: „Так скажеш до Йоава: Нехай не буде злою в оча́х твоїх ця річ, бо меч пожирає то цьо́го, то то́го. Підсиль війну свою проти міста, та й розвали його! І підбадьо́р його, Йоава!“

Then David said to the messenger, “Thus you shall say to Joab: ‘Do not let this thing [e]displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Strengthen your attack against the city, and overthrow it.’ So encourage him.”

26

І прочула Урі́єва жінка, що помер її чоловік Урі́я, і голоси́ла за своїм чоловіком.

When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.

27

А як минула жало́ба, то Давид послав, і забрав її до свого дому, і вона стала йому за жінку, і породи́ла йому сина. Та в Господніх оча́х була злою та річ, що оце зробив був Давид.

27

And when her mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased[f] the Lord.
