But the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb which he had bought and nourished; and it grew up together with him and with his children. It ate of his own food and drank from his own cup and lay in his bosom; and it was like a daughter to him.
І прийшов до багатого чоловіка подоро́жній, та той жалував узяти з худоби своєї дрібно́ї чи з худоби своєї великої, щоб споряди́ти їжу для подоро́жнього, що до нього прийшов, — і він узяв овечку того вбогого чоловіка, і споряди́в її для чоловіка, що до нього прийшов“.
And a traveler came to the rich man, who refused to take from his own flock and from his own herd to prepare one for the wayfaring man who had come to him; but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”
І сильно запала́в Давидів гнів на того чоловіка, і він сказав до Ната́на: „Як живий Господь, — вартий смерти той чоловік, що чинить таке́.
А овечку він опла́тить чотирикро́тно, за те, що зробив таку річ, і за те, що не змилосе́рдився“.
And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, because he did this thing and because he had no pity.”
І сказав Ната́н до Давида: „Ти́ той чоловік! Так сказав Господь, Бог Ізраїлів: Я пома́зав тебе над Ізраїлем, і Я спас тебе з Сау́лової руки.
Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.
І дав тобі дім твого пана, та жіно́к пана твого на лоно твоє, і дав тобі дім Ізраїля та Юди, а якщо цього мало, то додам тобі ще цього та того.
I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your keeping, and gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if that had been too little, I also would have given you much more!
І чому ти знева́жив Господнє слово, і вчинив це зло в оча́х Його? Хіттеянина Урію вбив ти мече́м, а його дружи́ну взяв собі за жінку. А його вбив мечем Аммонових синів.
Why have you despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in His sight? You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword; you have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the people of Ammon.
А тепер не відсту́пить меч від твого дому аж навіки за те, що знева́жив ти Мене́, і взяв дружи́ну хіттеяника Урії, щоб була тобі за жінку.
Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’
Так сказав Господь: Ось Я наведу́ на тебе зло з твого дому, і заберу́ жінок твоїх на оча́х твоїх, і дам ближньому твоєму, а він покладе́ться з жінка́ми твоїми при світлі цього сонця.
Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will raise up adversity against you from your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.
Хоч ти вчинив потає́мно, а Я зроблю́ цю річ перед усім Ізраїлем та перед сонцем“.
For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, before the sun.’ ”
І сказав Давид до Ната́на: „Згрішив я перед Господом!“ А Ната́н сказав до Давида: „І Господь зняв твій гріх, — не помреш!
So David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”
And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die.

However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die.”
І пішов Ната́н до свого дому, а Господь ура́зив дитя, що Давидові породи́ла Урієва жінка, і воно захво́ріло.

А Давид молив Бога за дитинку, і по́стив Давид, і вхо́див до кімна́ти, і ночував, поклавшись на землю.
David therefore pleaded with God for the child, and David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground.
I прийшли старші́ його дому до нього, щоб підня́ти його з землі, та він не хотів, і не підкріпи́вся з ними хлібом.
So the elders of his house arose and went to him, to raise him up from the ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food with them.
І сталося сьо́мого дня, — і поме́рло те дитя, а Давидові слу́ги боялися доне́сти йому, що померло те дитя, бо казали: „Ось як була́ та дити́на живою, говорили ми до нього, та не слухав він нашого голосу; а як ми скажемо до нього: „Померло це дитя“, то ще вчинить щось лихе“.
Then on the seventh day it came to pass that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. For they said, “Indeed, while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not heed our voice. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He may do some harm!”
А Давид побачив, що слу́ги його шепо́чуться поміж собою, — і зрозумів Давид, що поме́рло те дитя. І сказав Давид до своїх слуг: „Чи не поме́рло те дитя?“ А ті відказали: „Поме́рло“.
When David saw that his servants were whispering, David perceived that the child was dead. Therefore David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?”
And they said, “He is dead.”
And they said, “He is dead.”
І звівся Давид із землі, і помився, і намасти́вся, і змінив свою оде́жу, і ввійшов до Господнього до́му та й поклони́вся. Потому ввійшов до свого до́му, і захотів їсти, — і поклали йому хліба, і він їв.
So David arose from the ground, washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then he went to his own house; and when he requested, they set food before him, and he ate.
І сказали йому слу́ги його: ,Що́ це за річ, яку ти вчинив? Коли те дитя жило́, ти по́стив та плакав; а як поме́рло те дитя, ти встав та й їв хліб?“
Then his servants said to him, “What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but when the child died, you arose and ate food.”
А він відказав: „Коли те дитя ще жило́, я по́стив та плакав, бо казав: Хто знає, може Господь учинить мені милість, і буде жити дитя те?
А тепер, — поме́рло воно. На́що то я б по́стив? Чи змо́жу ще повернути його? Я піду́ до нього, а воно не ве́рнеться до мене“.
But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.”
І потішив Давид жінку свою Вірсаві́ю, і прийшов до неї, і ліг із нею. І вона вроди́ла сина, а він назвав ім'я́ йому: Соломо́н. І Госпо́дь полюбив його,
і послав пророка Ната́на, і той назвав ім'я́ йому: Єдід'я, ради Господа.
А Йоа́в воював з Раббо́ю аммоні́тян, і здобув царське́ місто.

Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the people of Ammon, and took the royal city.

І послав Йоав послів до Давида, і сказав: „Воював я з Раббою, і здобув я місто води.
And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, “I have fought against Rabbah, and I have taken the city’s water supply.
А тепер збери́ решту наро́ду, і табору́й біля міста, та здобудь його, щоб не здобу́в те місто я, і щоб не було воно на́зване моїм ім'я́м“.
Now therefore, gather the rest of the people together and encamp against the city and take it, lest I take the city and it be called after my name.”
І зібрав Давид увесь наро́д, і пішов до Рабби, і воював із нею, та й здобув її.
So David gathered all the people together and went to Rabbah, fought against it, and took it.
І взяв він коро́ну з голови їхнього царя, а вага її — тала́нт золота, та дорогий ка́мінь, і Давид поклав її́ на свою го́лову. І він виніс дуже багато здо́бичі з того міста.
А наро́д, що був у ньому, він повиво́див, і поклав їх під пи́лку, і під залі́зні доло́та та під залізні сокири, і позаганя́в їх до цегельня́ної пе́чі. І так робив він усім аммонітським міста́м. І вернувся Давид та ввесь наро́д до Єрусалиму.
And he brought out the people who were in it, and put them to work with saws and iron picks and iron axes, and made them cross over to the brick works. So he did to all the cities of the people of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
