А Йоав, син Церуї, пізнав, що царе́ве серце прихили́лося до Авесалома.
Absalom's Return to Jerusalem
And Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart was toward Absalom.
And Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart was toward Absalom.
І послав Йоав до Теко́ї, і взяв звідти мудру жінку, та й сказав до неї: „Удавай жало́бу, і вберись у жало́бні шати, і не намащуйся оливою, і будеш, як та жінка, що багато днів у жало́бі за померлим.
And Joab sent to Tekoah, and fetched thence a wise woman, and said to her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on mourning garments, I pray, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that hath a long time mourned for the dead;
І при́йдеш ти до царя, та й скажеш до нього таке то слово“. І Йоав поклав ці слова в її уста.
and come to the king, and speak after this manner to him. And Joab put the words into her mouth.
І говорила та текоїтянка до царя, і впала на обличчя своє на землю, і вклонилася та й сказала: „Поможи, ца́рю!“
And the woman of Tekoah spoke to the king, and she fell on her face to the ground and did obeisance, and said, Save, O king!
І сказав до неї цар: „Що́ тобі?“ А та відказала: „Та я жінка вдова, а чоловік мій помер.
And the king said to her, What aileth thee? And she said, I am indeed a widow woman, and my husband is dead.
А в невільниці твоєї двоє синів. І посвари́лися вони оби́два в полі, а рятівника́ між ними не було, — і вдарив один одно́го, та й убив його.
And thy bondmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other and slew him.
А ось увесь рід устав на невільницю твою та й кажуть: Видай убійника свого брата, і ми вб'ємо його за душу його брата, якого він убив, і вигубимо також спадкоє́мця. І пога́сять вони останню і́скру мою, яка позоста́лася, щоб не лишити моє́му чоловікові ані йме́ння, ані наща́дків на поверхні землі“.
And behold, the whole family is risen against thy bondmaid, and they say, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may put him to death, for the life of his brother whom he killed; and we will destroy the heir also: so they will quench my coal which is left, and will not leave to my husband a name or remnant on the earth.
І сказав цар до тієї жінки: „Іди до свого дому, а я накажу́ про тебе“.
And the king said to the woman, Go to thy house, and I will give charge concerning thee.
І сказала та текоїтянка до царя: „На мене, пане мій ца́рю, той гріх, та на дім мого батька, а цар та трон його невинні“.
And the woman of Tekoah said to the king, Upon me, my lord, O king, be the iniquity, and upon my father's house; and the king and his throne be guiltless.
І сказав цар: „Того, хто буде говорити на тебе, приведе́ш його до мене, і він більш уже не за́йме тебе“.
And the king said, Whoever speaks to thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.
Та вона відказала: „Нехай згадає цар Господа, Бога свого, щоб не помно́жити на згубу ме́сника за кров та щоб вони не погубили мого сина“. А він відказав: „Як живий Господь, — не впаде́ на землю й волоси́на сина твого́!“
Then she said, I pray thee, let the king remember Jehovah thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they cut off my son. And he said, [As] Jehovah liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
І сказала та жінка: „Нехай но невільниця твоя скаже слово до свого пана царя!“ А він відказав: „Говори!“
And the woman said, Let thy bondmaid, I pray thee, speak a word to my lord the king. And he said, Speak.
І сказала та жінка: „А чому ти так думаєш проти Божого народу? Бо цар, коли сказав таке слово, сам себе обвинува́тив, бо цар не верта́є свого вигна́нця.
And the woman said, Why then hast thou thought such a thing against God's people? and the king in saying this thing, is as one guilty, in that the king does not bring back his banished one.
Бо ми конче помремо, і ми як та вода, вилита на землю, що її не зібрати. Та Бог не знищить душі, і Він заду́мав не відвернути від Се́бе віді́гнаного.
For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; and God has not taken away his life, but devises means that the banished one be not expelled from him.
І оце тепер прийшла я сказати панові моєму цареві оцю справу, бо той наро́д настра́шив мене. І сказала твоя невільниця: Нехай скажу́ я цареві, — може виконає цар слово своєї невільниці.
And now that I am come to speak of this thing to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid; and thy bondmaid said, I will now speak to the king; perhaps the king will perform the request of his handmaid.
Бо цар вислухає, щоб урятува́ти свою невільницю з руки того чоловіка, що хоче ви́губити мене та мого сина ра́зом із Божого спа́дку.
For the king will hear, to deliver his handmaid out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.
І сказала твоя невільниця: Нехай станеться слово мого пана царя на втіху мені, бо мій пан цар як Ангол Божий, і розуміє добре та зле. А Господь, Бог твій, буде з тобою!“
And thy bondmaid said, Let the word of my lord the king now be comfortable; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad; and Jehovah thy God will be with thee.
А цар відповів та й сказав до тієї жінки: „Не заховай передо мною нічого, про що́ я спитаю тебе“. І сказала та жінка: „Нехай же говорить пан мій цар!“
And the king answered and said to the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.
І цар сказав: „Чи не Йоавова рука з тобою в усьому цьому?“ І відповіла та жінка та й сказала: „Як жива душа моя, пане мій царю, — не можна відхилитися ані право́руч, ані ліво́руч від усього, що́ говорив мій пан цар, бо твій раб Йоа́в — він наказав мені це, і він уклав в уста твоєї невільниці всі ці слова́.
And the king said, Is the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, [As] thy soul liveth, my lord, O king, there is no turning to the right hand or to the left from aught that my lord the king has spoken; for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words into the mouth of thy bondmaid:
Щоб змінити вигляд тієї справи, раб твій Йоав зробив оцю річ. А пан мій мудрий, як мудрий Божий Ангол, щоб знати про все, що на землі“.
in order to turn the appearance of the thing has thy servant Joab done this thing; but my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all that is in the earth.
І сказав цар до Йоава: „Ось зробив ти цю річ, тож піди, поверни́ того юнака́, Авесало́ма!“
And the king said to Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: so go, bring back the young man Absalom.
І впав Йоав на обличчя своє на землю, і поклонився, та й поблагослови́в царя. І сказав Йоав: „Сьогодні раб твій пізнав, що знайшов ласку в оча́х твоїх, пане мій ца́рю, бо цар виконав проха́ння свого́ раба“.
And Joab fell to the ground on his face and bowed himself, and blessed the king; and Joab said, To-day thy servant knows that I have found favour in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king has fulfilled the request of his servant.
І встав Йоав і пішов до Ґешуру, і привів Авесало́ма до Єрусалиму.
And Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.
А цар сказав: „Нехай він ве́рнеться до свого дому, але́ обличчя мого не побачить“. І вернувся Авесалом до дому свого, та царсько́го обличчя не бачив.
And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face. And Absalom withdrew to his own house, and saw not the king's face.
А такого вродли́вого мужа, як Авесалом, не було в усьому Ізраїлі, щоб був так дуже хва́лений, — від стопи ноги його й аж до ве́рху голови́ його не було в ньо́му ва́ди.
But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.
А коли він голив свою голову, — а голив він щороку, бо тяжке́ було волосся на ньому, тому голив його — то ва́жив воло́сся голови своєї на двісті шеклів царсько́ї ваги.
And when he shaved his head (for it was at every year's end that he shaved it, because it was heavy on him, therefore he shaved it), he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels after the king's weight.
І народи́лися Авесаломові троє синів та одна дочка́, а ім'я́ їй Тама́ра. Вона була жінка вродли́ва з ви́гляду.
And to Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a beautiful countenance.
І сидів Авесало́м в Єрусалимі два роки ча́су, а царсько́го обличчя не бачив.
Absalom Reconciled to David
So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and did not see the king's face.

І послав Авесало́м до Йоа́ва, щоб послати його до царя, та він не хотів прийти до нього. І послав він іще другий раз, та той не хотів прийти.
Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king; but he would not come to him; and he sent again the second time, but he would not come.
І сказав він до своїх слуг: „Погляньте на Йоавову діля́нку поля, що поруч мого, а в нього там ячмінь, — ідіть і підпаліть його огнем“. І Авесаломові слу́ги підпалили ту діля́нку поля огнем.
Then he said to his servants, See, Joab's allotment is near mine and he has barley there: go and set it on fire. And Absalom's servants set the allotment on fire.
Тоді Йоав устав і прийшов до Авесалома до дому, та й сказав йому: „Нащо слу́ги твої підпалили огнем ту мою діля́нку поля?“
Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom to [his] house, and said to him, Why have thy servants set my allotment on fire?
І сказав Авесалом до Йоава: „Я ж посилав до тебе, говорячи: Прийди сюди, і нехай я пошлю́ тебе до царя сказати: Чого я прийшо́в із Ґешу́ру? Добре було б мені ще лишатися там. А тепер нехай я побачу царське́ обличчя, а якщо є на мені гріх, то нехай уб'є мене“.
And Absalom said to Joab, Behold, I sent to thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Why am I come from Geshur? it would have been better for me to be there still. And now let me see the king's face; and if there be iniquity in me, let him slay me.
І прийшов Йоав до царя, і розповів йому те. І покликав він Авесало́ма, а той прийшов до царя та й поклонився йому обличчям своїм до землі. А цар поцілував Авесалома...
And Joab came to the king, and told him. And he called Absalom, and he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king; and the king kissed Absalom.
