І трапився там негідний чоловік, а ім'я́ йому Ше́ва, син Біхрі́, веніяминівець. І засурми́в він у сурму́ та й сказав: „Немає нам ча́стки в Давиді, і нема нам спа́дщини у сина Єссе́євого! Ізраїлю, — усі до наме́тів своїх!“

Sheba’s Revolt

Now a worthless fellow happened to be there whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite; and he blew the trumpet and said,
“We have no portion in David,
Nor do we have inheritance in the son of Jesse;
Every man to his tents, O Israel!”

І пішов кожен ізра́їльтянин від Давида за Ше́вою, сином Біхрі, а юде́янин позостався при своє́му цареві від Йорда́ну й аж до Єрусалиму.

So all the men of Israel withdrew from following David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah remained steadfast to their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.

І прийшов Давид до свого дому в Єрусалим. І взяв цар десять жіно́к наложниць, яких настановив був пильнувати дім, та й віддав їх до до́му сторо́жі; і він їх годував, але до них не прихо́див. І були вони ув'я́знені аж до дня своєї смерти, — удівство за життя чоловіка.

Then David came to his house at Jerusalem, and the king took the ten women, the concubines whom he had left to keep the house, and placed them under guard and provided them with sustenance, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as widows.

І сказав цар до Амаси: „Склич мені юде́ян у три дні, а ти стань отут!“

Then the king said to Amasa, “Call out the men of Judah for me within three days, and be present here yourself.”

І пішов Амаса́, щоб скликати Юду, та спізни́вся від озна́ченого ча́су, про який він умовився.

So Amasa went to call out the men of Judah, but he delayed longer than the set time which he had appointed him.

І сказав Давид до Авішая: „Тепер Ше́ва, син Біхрі́, зробить нам зло більше від Авесалома. Візьми́ ти слуг свого пана, та й поженися за ним, щоб він не знайшов собі тверди́нних міст, і не щез із наших оче́й“.

And David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom; take your lord’s servants and pursue him, so that he does not find for himself fortified cities and escape from our sight.”

І вийшли за ним Йоавові люди, і керетянин, і пелетянин та всі ли́царі, і повихо́дили вони з Єрусалиму, щоб гнатися за Шевою, сином Біхрі.

So Joab’s men went out after him, along with the Cherethites and the Pelethites and all the mighty men; and they went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.

Вони були при великому камені, що в Ґів'оні, а Амаса вийшов проти них. А Йоав був зодя́гнений в ша́ту свою, а на ній пояс із мечем, прип'я́тим на стегні́ його в пі́хві, з якої ле́гко вихо́див і вхо́див.

When they were at the large stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was dressed in his military attire, and over it was a belt with a sword in its sheath fastened at his waist; and as he went forward, it fell out.

І сказав Йоав до Амаси: „Чи гаразд тобі, брате мій?“ І Йоав узяв правою рукою Амасу за бороду, щоб поцілувати його.

Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.

10

А Амаса́ не остерігся меча, що був у Йоавовій руці. І той ударив його ним у живіт, і ви́лив нутро́ його на землю, і не повторив йому, а той помер... І Йоав та брат його Авішай гналися за Шевою, сином Біхрі.

Amasa Murdered

But Amasa was not on guard against the sword which was in Joab’s hand so he struck him in the belly with it and poured out his inward parts on the ground, and did not strike him again, and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri.

А один з Йоавових слуг став над ним та й говорив: „Хто жадає Йоава, і хто за Давида, — за Йоавом!“

Now there stood by him one of Joab’s young men, and said, “Whoever favors Joab and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab.”

А Амасу валявся в крові́ на сере́дині битої дороги. І побачив той чоловік, що ввесь народ став, то стягнув Амасу́ з битої дороги на поле, і накинув на нього оде́жину, бо бачив, що кожен прихо́див до нього та ставав.

But Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the middle of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he removed Amasa from the highway into the field and threw a garment over him when he saw that everyone who came by him stood still.

Як був він стя́гнений з битої дороги, пішов кожен чоловік за Йоавом, щоб гнатися за Ше́вою, сином Біхрі́.

Revolt Put Down

As soon as he was removed from the highway, all the men passed on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.

14

А той перейшов серед усіх Ізраїлевих племе́н до Авелу та до Бет-Маахи, і серед усіх береян, — і були вони зі́брані, і теж пішли за ним.

Now he went through all the tribes of Israel to Abel, even Beth-maacah, and all the Berites; and they were gathered together and also went after him.

15

А Йоавові люди прийшли й облягли́ його в Авелі Бет-Маахи, і наси́пали при місті ва́ла, що стояв на передму́р'ї. А ввесь наро́д, що був з Йоавом, заходи́вся завали́ти му́ра.

They came and besieged him in Abel Beth-maacah, and they cast up a siege ramp against the city, and it stood by the rampart; and all the people who were with Joab were wreaking destruction in order to topple the wall.

16

І покликала мудра жінка з міста: „Слухайте, слухайте, — скажіть но Йоавові: Підійди сюди, й я бу́ду говорити до тебе!“

Then a wise woman called from the city, “Hear, hear! Please tell Joab, ‘Come here that I may speak with you.’”

17

І він підійшов до неї, а та жінка сказала: „Чи ти Йоав?“ А він відказав: „Я“. І вона сказала йому: „Послухай слів своєї невільниці!“ А він відказав: „Я слухаю“.

So he approached her, and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” And he answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your maidservant.” And he answered, “I am listening.”

18

І сказала вона, говорячи: „Коли́сь треба було перегово́рювати, а саме, — конче запитатися в Аве́лі, і так закінчи́ли б справу.

Then she spoke, saying, “Formerly they used to say, ‘They will surely ask advice at Abel,’ and thus they ended the dispute.

19

Я із спокійних та вірних міст Ізраїля, ти ж шукаєш погубити місто та матері́в серед Ізраїля. По́що ти нищиш спа́дщину Господню?“

“I am of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You are seeking to destroy a city, even a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up the inheritance of the LORD?”

20

А Йоав відповів та й сказав: „Борони Боже, борони мене, Боже! Присягаю, що не зни́щу й не ви́гублю!

Joab replied, “Far be it, far be it from me that I should swallow up or destroy!

21

Це не так, бо чоловік з Єфремових гір, Ше́ва, син Біхрі, ім'я́ йому, підніс свою руку на царя на Давида. Дайте його само́го, й я піду від міста“. І сказала та жінка до Йоава: „Ось го́лову його кинуть тобі через мур!“

“Such is not the case. But a man from the hill country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against King David. Only hand him over, and I will depart from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head will be thrown to you over the wall.”

22

І пішла та жінка до всього народу в своїй мудрості, — і відруба́ли голову Ше́ви, сина Біхрі, та й кинули до Йоава. А той засурми́в у сурму́, — і розійшлися від міста кожен до наметів своїх. А Йоа́в вернувся в Єрусалим до царя.

Then the woman wisely came to all the people. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they were dispersed from the city, each to his tent. Joab also returned to the king at Jerusalem.

23

І став Йоав над усім Ізраїлевим ві́йськом, а Бена́я, син Єгоядин, над керетянином та над пелетянином;

Now Joab was over the whole army of Israel, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites;

24

а Адорам — над даниною, а Йосафат, син Ахілудів, був канцлером;

24

and Adoram was over the forced labor, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder;

25

а Сева — писарем, а Садок та Евіятар — священиками.

25

and Sheva was scribe, and Zadok and Abiathar were priests;
