Elijah and Obadiah
After a long time, in the third year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.”

While Jezebel was killing off the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.)
І сказав Ахав до Овдія: „Іди по кра́ю до всіх во́дних джере́л та до всіх потоків, — може зна́йдемо трави, і позоста́вимо при житті коня та мула, і не ви́губимо худоби“...
Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.”
І поділили вони собі Край, щоб перейти по ньому, — Ахав пішов однією дорогою сам, Овді́й пішов сам другою дорогою.
So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.
І був Овдій у дорозі, аж ось Ілля назу́стріч йому́. І пізнав він його, і впав на обличчя своє та й сказав: „Чи то ти, пане мій Іллє́?“
As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”
А той відказав йому: „Я. Іди, скажи панові своєму: Ось тут Ілля!“
“Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’ ”
А він сказав: „Чим я прогрішив, що ти віддаєш свого раба в Ахавову руку, щоб він убив мене?
“What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death?
Як живий Господь, Бог твій, — немає наро́ду та царства, що туди не посилав би пан мій шукати тебе. А коли говорили: Нема його, то він заприсяга́в те царство та той народ, що зна́йдуть тебе.
As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you.
А тепер ти говориш: Іди, скажи своє́му панові: Ось тут Ілля!
But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’
І станеться, я піду́ від тебе, а Дух Господній понесе тебе на те місце, якого не знаю. І прийду́ я, щоб доне́сти Ахаву, а коли він не зна́йде тебе, то вб'є мене. А раб твій боїться Господа від своєї мо́лодости.
I don’t know where the Spirit of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the Lord since my youth.
Чи ж не було сказано панові моєму те, що́ зробив я, коли Єзаве́ль побивала Господніх пророків, а я сховав був із Господніх пророків сотню чоловіка, по п'ятидесяти чоловіка в печері, і годував їх хлібом та водою?
Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water.
А тепер ти кажеш: Іди, скажи своєму панові: Ось тут Ілля, — і він мене вб'є!“
And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”
Та Ілля відказав: „Як живий Господь Савао́т, що я стою́ перед Його лицем, — сьогодні я покажу́ся йому!“
Elijah said, “As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.”
I пішов Овді́й назу́стріч Аха́ву, та й доніс йому те. І пішов Ахав навпро́ти Іллі.
Elijah on Mount Carmel
So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

І сталося, коли Ахав побачив Іллю, то Ахав сказав до нього: „Чи це ти, що непоко́їш Ізраїля?“
When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”
А той відказав: „Не я внещасли́вив Ізраїля, а тільки ти та дім твого батька через ваше недотри́мання Господніх за́повідей, та й ти пішов за Ваалами.
“I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals.
А тепер пошли, збери до мене на го́ру Карме́л усього Ізраїля та чотири сотні й п'ятдесят Ваалових пророків, та чотири сотні пророків Астарти, що їдять зо сто́лу Єзаве́лі“.
Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”
І послав Ахав по всіх Ізраїлевих синах, і зібрав пророків на го́ру Карме́л.
So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.
І підійшов Ілля до всьо́го наро́ду й сказав: „Чи довго ви бу́дете скака́ти на двох галу́зках? Якщо Господь — Бог, ідіть за Ним, а якщо Ваал — ідіть за ним!“ Та не відповів йому народ ані слова.
Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”
But the people said nothing.

І сказав Ілля до наро́ду: „Я сам позоста́вся Господній пророк, а пророків Ваалових — чотири сотні й п'ятдесят чоловіка.
Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.
І нехай дадуть нам двох бичкі́в, і нехай вони ви́беруть собі одно́го бичка́, і нехай заріжуть його, і нехай покладуть на дро́ва, а огню́ не покладу́ть. І я приготу́ю одного бичка́, і дам на дро́ва, а огню не покладу́.
Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it.
І ви покличете ім'я́ бога вашого, а я покли́чу Ім'я́ Господа. І станеться, той Вог, що відповість огнем, — Він Бог!“ І відповів той наро́д та й сказав: „Це добре слово!“
Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire — he is God.”

І сказав Ілля до Ваалових пророків: „Виберіть собі одно́го бичка́, і приготу́йте перші, бо ви численні́ші, і покличте ім'я́ свого́ бога, а огню́ не покладете“.
Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.”
І взяли́ вони того бичка, що він дав їм, і вони приготува́ли й кли́кали Ваалове ім'я́ від ра́нку й аж до полу́дня, говорячи: „Ваа́ле, почу́й нас!“ Та не було ані голосу, ані ві́дповіді. І скакали вони біля же́ртівника, що зроби́ли.
So they took the bull given them and prepared it.
Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

І сталося опі́вдні, і сміявся з них Ілля й говорив: „Кличте голосом сильні́шим, бо він бог! Може він розду́мує, або відлучи́вся, або в дорозі! Може він спить, то проки́неться!“
At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”
І стали вони кликати голосом сильні́шим, і коло́лися, за своїм зви́чаєм, меча́ми та ра́тищами, аж лила́ся з них кров.
So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.
І сталося, як минувся пі́вдень, то вони пророкували аж до часу прине́сення хлібної жертви, — та не було́ ані голосу, ані відповіді, ані слуху...
Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.
І сказав Ілля до всього наро́ду: „Підійдіть до ме́не!“ І підійшов увесь наро́д до нього, а він поправив розбитого Господнього же́ртівника.
Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.
І взяв Ілля дванадцятеро каміння, за числом племе́н синів Якова, до якого було слово Господнє, говорячи: „Ізра́їль буде їм'я́ твоє!“
Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”
і збудува́в із того камі́ння же́ртівника в Ім'я́ Господнє, і зробив рова, площею на дві са́ті насіння, навколо же́ртівника.
І наклав дров, і зарізав бичка та й поклав на дро́вах.
He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”
І він сказав: „Напо́вніть чотири відрі́ води, і нехай виллють на цілопа́лення та на дро́ва“. І сказав: „Повторіть!“ І повтори́ли. І сказав: „Зробіть утре́тє!“ І зробили втре́тє.
“Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.
“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time.
“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time.
І потекла вода навколо же́ртівника, а також рів напо́внився водою.
The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
І сталося в час прине́сення хлі́бної жертви, що підійшов пророк Ілля та й сказав: „Господи, Боже Авраамів, Ісаків та Ізраїлів! Сьогодні пізна́ють, що Ти Ізраїлів Бог, а я Твій раб, і що все оце я зробив Твоїм словом.
At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.
Вислухай мене, Господи, вислухай мене, і нехай пізна́є цей наро́д, що Ти — Господь, Бог, і Ти обе́рнеш їхнє серце наза́д!“
Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
І спав Господній огонь, та й поже́р цілопа́лення, і дро́ва, і камі́ння, і по́рох, і ви́лизав воду, що в рові.
Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
І побачили це всі люди, та й попа́дали на обличчя свої й говорили: „Господь, — Він Бог, Господь, — Він Бог!“
When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The Lord — he is God! The Lord — he is God!”
І сказав до них Ілля: „Схопі́ть Ваалових пророків! Нехай ніхто не втече́ з них!“ І похапа́ли їх, а Ілля звів їх до потоку Кішо́н, та й порізав їх...
Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.
І сказав Ілля до Ахава: „Увійди, їж і пий, бо ось чути шум дощу́“.
And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.”
І пішов Ахав, щоб їсти та нити, а Ілля зійшов на верхі́в'я Карме́лу, і нахили́вся до землі, і поклав обличчя своє між свої колі́на.
So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.
І сказав він до свого хло́пця: „Вийди, подивися в на́прямі моря!“ І той вийшов і подивився та й сказав: „Нема нічо́го“. Та він відказав: „Вернися сім раз!“
“Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked.
“There is nothing there,” he said.
Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
“There is nothing there,” he said.
Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
І сталося сьомого разу, і він сказав: „Ось мала хмара, немов долоня лю́дська, підійма́ється з моря“. А він сказав: „Піди, скажи Ахавові: Запрягай і зійди, і не затримає тебе дощ“.
The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”
So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’ ”
So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’ ”
І сталося по недовгому ча́сі, і поте́мніло небо від хмар, і зірвався вітер, — і пішов великий дощ. А Ахав сів на воза, та й відправився в Їзреел.
Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.
