бо вони не стріли були Ізраїлевих синів хлібом та водою, і найняли́ були на нього Валаама прокля́сти його, та Бог наш обернув те прокляття на благослове́ння.
because they had not met the Israelites with food and water but had hired Balaam to call a curse down on them. (Our God, however, turned the curse into a blessing.)
І сталося, як почули вони Зако́н, то відділили від Ізраїля все чуже.
When the people heard this law, they excluded from Israel all who were of foreign descent.
А перед тим священик Ел'яшів, призна́чений до комори дому нашого Бога, близьки́й Товійїн,
Before this, Eliashib the priest had been put in charge of the storerooms of the house of our God. He was closely associated with Tobiah,
то зробив йому велику комору, а туди давали колись жертву хлі́бну, ла́дан, і по́суд, і десятину збіжжя, молоде вино та оливу, призначені за́повіддю для Левитів, і співаків, і придве́рних, і священичі прине́сення.
and he had provided him with a large room formerly used to store the grain offerings and incense and temple articles, and also the tithes of grain, new wine and olive oil prescribed for the Levites, musicians and gatekeepers, as well as the contributions for the priests.
А за ввесь цей час не був я в Єрусалимі, бо в тридцять другому році Артаксе́ркса, царя вавилонського, я прийшов був до царя, та по певному ча́сі ви́просився я від царя.
But while all this was going on, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Some time later I asked his permission
І прийшов я до Єрусалиму, і розглянувся в тому злі, що зробив Єл'яшів Товійї, ро́блячи йому комору на подві́р'ях Божого дому.
and came back to Jerusalem. Here I learned about the evil thing Eliashib had done in providing Tobiah a room in the courts of the house of God.
І було мені дуже зле, й я всі домашні Товійїні речі повикида́в геть із комори.
I was greatly displeased and threw all Tobiah’s household goods out of the room.
І я сказав, і очи́стили комори, а я вернув туди по́суд Божого дому, хлі́бну жертву та ла́дан.
I gave orders to purify the rooms, and then I put back into them the equipment of the house of God, with the grain offerings and the incense.
І дові́дався я, що левитські ча́стки не давалися, а вони повтікали кожен на поле своє, ті Левити та співаки́, що робили свою працю.
I also learned that the portions assigned to the Levites had not been given to them, and that all the Levites and musicians responsible for the service had gone back to their own fields.
І докоряв я заступникам та й сказав: „Чого опу́щений дім Божий?“ І зібрав я їх, і поставив їх на їхніх місця́х.
So I rebuked the officials and asked them, “Why is the house of God neglected?” Then I called them together and stationed them at their posts.
І вся Юдея прино́сила десятину збіжжя, і молодого вина, і оливи до скарбни́ць.
All Judah brought the tithes of grain, new wine and olive oil into the storerooms.
І настанови́в я над скарбни́цями священика Шелемію й книжника Садока та Педаю з Левитів, а на їхню руку — Ханана, сина Заккура, сина Маттаніїного, бо вони були уважа́ні за вірних. І на них покладено — діли́ти частки для їхніх братів.
I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and a Levite named Pedaiah in charge of the storerooms and made Hanan son of Zakkur, the son of Mattaniah, their assistant, because they were considered trustworthy. They were made responsible for distributing the supplies to their fellow Levites.
Пам'ятай же мене, Боже, за це, і не зітри́ моїх добродійств, які я зробив у Божому домі та в сторо́жах!
Remember me for this, my God, and do not blot out what I have so faithfully done for the house of my God and its services.
Тими днями бачив я в Юдеї таких, що топта́ли в суботу чави́ла, і носи́ли снопи́, і нав'ю́чували на ослів вино, виноград, і фіґі, і всілякий тяга́р, і ве́зли до Єрусалиму суботнього дня. І я при свідках остеріг їх того дня, коли вони продавали живність.
In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, together with wine, grapes, figs and all other kinds of loads. And they were bringing all this into Jerusalem on the Sabbath. Therefore I warned them against selling food on that day.
А тиряни ме́шкали в ньому, і постача́ли рибу й усе на про́даж, і продавали в суботу Юдиним синам та в Єрусалимі.
People from Tyre who lived in Jerusalem were bringing in fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them in Jerusalem on the Sabbath to the people of Judah.
I докоряв я Юдиним шляхе́тним та й сказав їм: „Що́ це за річ, яку ви робите, і безчестите суботній день?
I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this wicked thing you are doing — desecrating the Sabbath day?
Чи ж не так робили ваші батьки, а наш Бог спровадив усе це зло на нас та на це місто? А ви побі́льшуєте жар гніву на Ізраїля зневажа́нням суботи“.
Didn’t your ancestors do the same things, so that our God brought all this calamity on us and on this city? Now you are stirring up more wrath against Israel by desecrating the Sabbath.”
І бувало, як падала вечерова тінь на єрусалимські брами перед суботою, то я наказував, — і були зами́кувані брами. І звелів я, щоб не відчиняли їх, а тільки аж по суботі. А біля брам я поставив слуг своїх, — щоб тяга́р не входив суботнього дня!
When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered the doors to be shut and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day.
І ночували крамарі́ та продавці всього продажного раз і два поза Єрусалимом.
Once or twice the merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night outside Jerusalem.
І остеріг я їх при свідках та й сказав їм: „Чого ви ночуєте навпроти муру? Якщо ви повто́рите це, я простягну́ руку на вас!“ Від того ча́су вони не прихо́дили в суботу.
But I warned them and said, “Why do you spend the night by the wall? If you do this again, I will arrest you.” From that time on they no longer came on the Sabbath.
І сказав я Левитам, щоб вони очи́стилися й прихо́дили стерегти брами, щоб освятити суботній день. Також це запам'ятай мені, Боже мій, і змилуйся надо мною за великістю милости Твоєї!
Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and go and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy.

Тими днями бачив я також юдеїв, що брали собі за жіно́к ашдо́дянок, аммоні́тянок, моаві́тянок.
Moreover, in those days I saw men of Judah who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab.
А їхні сини говорили наполовину по-ашдо́дському, і не вміли говорити по-юдейському, а говорили мовою того чи того наро́ду.
Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples, and did not know how to speak the language of Judah.
І докоряв я їм, і проклинав їх, і бив декого з них, і рвав їм волосся, і заприсягав їх Богом, ка́жучи: „Не давайте ваших дочо́к їхнім синам, і не беріть їхніх дочо́к для ваших синів та для вас.
I rebuked them and called curses down on them. I beat some of the men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath in God’s name and said: “You are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons, nor are you to take their daughters in marriage for your sons or for yourselves.
Чи ж не цим згрішив був Соломон, Ізраїлів цар, — а між багатьма́ наро́дами не було такого царя, як він, і був уподо́баний Богові своєму, і Бог настанови́в його царем над усім Ізраїлем, — і його ввели́ в гріх ті чужі жінки́?
Was it not because of marriages like these that Solomon king of Israel sinned? Among the many nations there was no king like him. He was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel, but even he was led into sin by foreign women.
І тому́ чи ж чуте було́ таке, щоб чинити все це велике лихо на спроневі́рення проти нашого Бога, щоб брати чужих жіно́к?“
Must we hear now that you too are doing all this terrible wickedness and are being unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women?”
А один із синів Йояди, сина Ел'яшіва, великого священика, був зятем хоронянина Санваллата, — і я вигнав його від себе!
One of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite. And I drove him away from me.
Запам'ята́й же їм, Боже мій, за спля́млення свяще́нства та заповіту свяще́ничого та леви́тського!
Remember them, my God, because they defiled the priestly office and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.
І очистив я їх від усього чужого, і встановив че́рги для священиків та для Левитів, кожного в службі їх,
So I purified the priests and the Levites of everything foreign, and assigned them duties, each to his own task.
