І сталося в місяці ніса́ні, двадцятого року царя Артаксе́ркса, було раз вино перед ним. І взяв я те вино й дав цареві. І я, здавалося, не був сумни́й перед ним.

Artaxerxes Sends Nehemiah to Jerusalem

In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before,

Та сказав мені цар: „Чому́ обличчя твоє сумне́, — чи ти не хворий? Це не інше що, як тільки сум серця“. І я ве́льми сильно злякався!

so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.”
I was very much afraid,

І сказав я до царя: „Нехай цар живе навіки! Чому́ не буде сумне́ обличчя моє, коли місто дому гробі́в батьків моїх поруйноване, а брами його попа́лені огнем!“

but I said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”

І сказав мені цар: „Чого ж ти просиш?“ І я помолився до Небесного Бога,

The king said to me, “What is it you want?”
Then I prayed to the God of heaven,

5

і сказав цареві: Якщо це цареві вгодне, і якщо раб твій уподо́баний перед обличчям твоїм, то пошли мене до Юдеї, до міста гробі́в батьків моїх, — і я відбуду́ю його“!

and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.”

І сказав мені цар (а цариця сиділа при ньо́му): „Скільки ча́су буде дорога твоя, і коли ти пове́рнешся?“ І сподо́балось це цареві, і він послав мене, а я призна́чив йому час.

Then the king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked me, “How long will your journey take, and when will you get back?” It pleased the king to send me; so I set a time.

І сказав я цареві: „Якщо це цареві вгодне, нехай дадуть мені листи́ до намісників Зарі́ччя, щоб прова́дили мене, аж поки не прийду́ до Юдеї,

I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may I have letters to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, so that they will provide me safe-conduct until I arrive in Judah?

і листа до Асафа, дозо́рця царевого лісу, щоб дав мені де́рева на бру́сся для замко́вих брам, що належать до Божого дому, і для місько́го муру, і для дому, що до нього ввійду́“. І дав мені цар в міру того, як добра була Божа рука надо мною.

And may I have a letter to Asaph, keeper of the royal park, so he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple and for the city wall and for the residence I will occupy?” And because the gracious hand of my God was on me, the king granted my requests.

І прибув я до намісників Заріччя, і дав їм цареві листи́. А цар послав зо мною зверхників ві́йська та верхівці́в.

So I went to the governors of Trans-Euphrates and gave them the king’s letters. The king had also sent army officers and cavalry with me.

І почув про це хоронянин Санваллат та раб аммоні́тянин Товія, і було їм прикро, дуже прикро, що прийшов чоловік клопота́тися про добро для Ізраїлевих синів.

When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard about this, they were very much disturbed that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites.

І прийшов я до Єрусалиму, і був там три дні.

Nehemiah Inspects Jerusalem’s Walls

I went to Jerusalem, and after staying there three days

І встав я вночі, я та трохи людей зо мною, і не розповів я ніко́му, що Бог мій дав до мого серця зробити для Єрусалиму. А худоби не було зо мною, окрім тієї худоби, що я нею їздив.

I set out during the night with a few others. I had not told anyone what my God had put in my heart to do for Jerusalem. There were no mounts with me except the one I was riding on.

13

І вийшов я Долинною брамою вночі, і пішов до джерела́ Таннін, і до брами Смітникової. І я докладно огля́нув мури Єрусалиму, що були́ поруйно́вані,а брами його були попа́лені огнем.

By night I went out through the Valley Gate toward the Jackala Well and the Dung Gate, examining the walls of Jerusalem, which had been broken down, and its gates, which had been destroyed by fire.

14

І перейшов я до Джерельної брами та до царсько́го ставу, та там не було місця для перехо́ду худоби, що була́ підо мною.

Then I moved on toward the Fountain Gate and the King’s Pool, but there was not enough room for my mount to get through;

15

І йшов я долиною вночі, і докладно оглядав мура. Потім я вернувся, і ввійшов Долинною брамою, і вернувся.

so I went up the valley by night, examining the wall. Finally, I turned back and reentered through the Valley Gate.

16

А заступники не знали, куди я пішов та що́ я роблю́, а юдеям, і священикам, і шляхті, і заступникам, і решті тих, що робили працю, я доти нічо́го не розповіда́в.

16

The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, because as yet I had said nothing to the Jews or the priests or nobles or officials or any others who would be doing the work.

17

I сказав я до них: „Ви бачите біду́, що ми в ній, що Єрусалим зруйно́ваний, а бра́ми його попа́лені огнем. Ідіть, і збудуйте мура Єрусалиму, і вже не бу́демо ми га́ньбою!“

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.”

18

І розповів я їм про руку Бога мого, що вона добра до мене, а також слова царя, які сказав він мені. І сказали вони: „Станемо й збудуємо!“ І зміцнили вони руки свої на добре ді́ло.

I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me.
They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.

19

І почув це хоронянин Санваллат та аммоні́тянин раб Товія, і араб Ґешем, і сміялися з нас, і пого́рджували нами й говорили: „Що це за річ, яку ви робите? Чи проти царя ви бунтуєтесь?“

But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official and Geshem the Arab heard about it, they mocked and ridiculed us. “What is this you are doing?” they asked. “Are you rebelling against the king?”

20

А я їм відповів і сказав до них: „Небесний Бог — Він дасть нам у́спіх, а ми, Його раби, станемо й збудуємо! А вам нема ані частки, ані права, ані пам'ятки в Єрусалимі!“

20

I answered them by saying, “The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it.”
