Та й сила рук їхніх для чого бува́ла мені? Повня сил їх мину́лась!
Yea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me, in whom old age was perished?
Само́тні були в недоста́тку та голоді, ссали вони суху землю, зруйновану та опустілу!
For want and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.
рвали вони лободу́ на кущах, ялівце́ве ж коріння було їхнім хлібом.
Who cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their meat.
Вони були ви́гнані з-поміж людей, кричали на них, немов на злоді́їв,
They were driven forth from among men, (they cried after them as after a thief;)
так що вони пробува́ли в яру́гах долин, по я́мах підземних та скелях,
To dwell in the clifts of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.
ревіли вони між кущами, збирались під те́рням, —
Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were gathered together.
сини нерозумного й діти неславного, вони були ви́гнані з кра́ю!
They were children of fools, yea, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.
А тепер я став піснею їм, і зробився для них погово́ром.
And now am I their song, yea, I am their byword.
Вони обриди́ли мене, віддали́лись від мене, і від мойого обличчя не стримали сли́ни,
They abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.
бо Він розв'яза́в мого пояса й мучить мене, то й вони ось вузде́чку із себе відкинули перед обличчям моїм.
Because he hath loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.
По прави́ці встають жовтодзю́бі, но́ги мені підставляють, і то́пчуть на мене дороги нещастя свого.
Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.
Пори́ли вони мою сте́жку, хо́чуть мати ко́ристь із мойого життя, немає кому їх затримати, —
They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper.
немов через ви́лім широкий прихо́дять, валяються попід румо́вищем.
They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.
Оберну́лось страхіття на мене, моя слава проне́слась, як вітер, і, як хмара, мину́лося щастя моє.
Job's Prosperity Becomes Calamity
Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud.

А тепер розливається в мене душа моя, хапають мене дні нещастя!
And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.
Вночі мої кості від мене віддо́вбуються, а жи́ли мої не вспоко́юються.
My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.
З великої Божої сили зміни́лося тіло моє, і неду́га мене опері́зує, мов той хіто́н.
By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.
Він укинув мене до болота, і став я подібний до по́роху й по́пелу.
He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.
Я кли́чу до Тебе, та Ти мені відповіді не даєш, я перед Тобою стою́, Ти ж на мене лише придивля́єшся.
I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me not.
Ти зміни́вся мені на жорстокого, мене Ти женеш силою Своєї руки.
Thou art become cruel to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest thyself against me.
На вітер підняв Ти мене, на нього мене посадив, і робиш, щоб я розтопи́всь на спусто́шення!
Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon it, and dissolvest my substance.
Знаю я: Ти до смерти прова́диш мене, і до дому зібра́ння, яко́го призна́чив для всього живого.
For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.
Хіба не простяга́є руки́ потопе́льник, чи він у нещасті своїм не кричить?
Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.
Чи ж не плакав я за бідаре́м? Чи за вбогим душа моя не сумувала?
Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the poor?
Бо чекав я добра́, але лихо прийшло, сподівався я світла, та темно́та прийшла.
When I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.
Киплять мої ну́трощі й не замовка́ють, зустріли мене дні нещастя,
My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me.
ходжу́ почорнілий без сонця, на зборі встаю та кричу́.
I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.
Я став братом шака́лам, а струся́там — това́ришем,
I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.
моя шкіра зчорніла та й лу́питься з мене, від спеко́ти спали́лися кості мої.
My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.
