Bread from Heaven
They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt.

І стала ре́мствувати вся громада Ізраїлевих синів на Мойсея та на Аарона в пустині.
And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness,
І говорили їм Ізраїлеві сини: „Коли б ми були повмирали від Господньої руки в єгипетськім кра́ї, як ми сиділи над горшком м'яса, як ми їли хліба до́сить! Бо ви вивели нас до цієї пустині, щоб поморити голодом увесь цей збір“.
and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
І промовив Господь до Мойсея: „Ось Я спускатиму вам дощем хліб із неба, а наро́д вихо́дитиме й щоденно збиратиме, скільки треба на день, щоб ви́пробувати його, чи буде він ходити в Моєму Зако́ні, чи ні.
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.
А настане шостий день, то приготують, що принесу́ть, і буде подвійне супроти того, що збирають день-у-день “.
On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.”
І сказали Мойсей та Аарон до всіх Ізраїлевих синів: „Настане вечір — і ви довідаєтеся, що Господь вивів вас із єгипетського кра́ю.
So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, “At evening you shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt,
А настане ра́нок, то побачите славу Господню, бо Він почув ваші ре́мствування на Господа. А ми що́, що ви ре́мствуєте на нас?“
and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against the Lord. For what are we, that you grumble against us?”
І сказав Мойсей: „Довідаєтесь, як увечорі Господь дасть вам м'яса на їжу, а рано хліба на наси́чення, бо почув Господь ре́мствування ваші, що ви ре́мствуєте на Нього. А ми́ що? Не на нас ре́мствування ваше, а на Господа!“
And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the Lord has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him — what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the Lord.”
І сказав Мойсей до Аарона: „Скажи всій громаді Ізраїлевих синів: Наблизьтеся перед лице Господа, бо Він почув ваші ре́мствування!“
Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, ‘Come near before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’”
І сталося, коли говорив Аарон до всієї громади Ізраїлевих синів, то обернулися вони до пустині, — аж ось слава Господня показалася в хмарі!
And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.
„Я почув ре́мствування Ізраїлевих синів. Промовляй до них, кажучи: Під вечір бу́дете їсти м'ясо, а рано наси́титесь хлібом, — і познаєте, що Я — Господь, Бог ваш!“
“I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”
І сталося ввечорі, і зняли́ся перепели́ці, і покрили та́бір. А рано була верства́ роси навколо табо́ру.
In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew lay around the camp.
І підняла́ся верства́ тієї роси, — аж ось на пове́рхні пустині щось дрі́бне, вузькувате, дрібне, немов па́морозь на землі.
And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground.
І побачили Ізраїлеві сини, та й казали один до одного: „Ман гу?“, бо не знали, що́ то. А Мойсей відказав їм: „Це той хліб, що дав вам Господь на їжу.
Це те, що про нього Господь наказав: Збирайте з нього кожен у міру їди́ своєї, го́мер на голову, за числом ваших душ: візьміть кожен для того, хто в наме́ті його.
I зробили так Ізраїлеві сини, і назбирали хто більше, а хто менше.
And the people of Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less.
І зміряли вони гомером, — і не мав зайвого той, хто зібрав більше, а хто зібрав менше, не мав нестачі, — зібрали кожен у міру своєї їди́!
But when they measured it with an omer, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat.
І сказав до них Мойсей: „Нехай ніхто не лишає з ньо́го до ра́нку!“
And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it over till the morning.”
Та не послухали вони Мойсея, і дехто позоставля́ли з нього до ранку, а воно зачерви́віло, і стало смердюче. І розгнівався на них Мойсей!
But they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them.
І збирали його щора́нку, кожен у міру своєї їди. А розгрівалося сонце — і воно розтавало.
Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.
І сталося шостого дня, — поназби́рували вони хліба подвійно, два гомери на одного. І посхо́дилися всі начальники громади, і розповіли Мойсеєві.
On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers each. And when all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses,
А він сказав до них: „Це те, що говорив Господь: Повний спокій, субота свята для Господа взавтра. Що бу́дете пекти — печіть, а що бу́дете варити — варіть, а все позостале покладіть собі на схо́вок до ра́нку“.
he said to them, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over lay aside to be kept till the morning.’”
І поклали його аж до ранку, як Мойсей наказав, і не засмерділось воно, і черви́ не було в нім.
So they laid it aside till the morning, as Moses commanded them, and it did not stink, and there were no worms in it.
І сказав Мойсей: „Їжте його сьогодні, бо сьогодні субота для Господа. Сьогодні не зна́йдете його на полі.
Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field.
Шість день будете збирати його, а дня сьомого — субота: не бу́де в ній того“.
Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, which is a Sabbath, there will be none.”
І сталося сьо́мого дня, повихо́дили були з наро́ду збирати, та не знайшли.
On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but they found none.
І сказав Господь до Мойсея: „Аж доки ви будете відмовлятися виконувати заповіді Мої та зако́ни Мої?
And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?
Побачте, — Господь дав вам суботу, тому Він дає вам шостого дня хліба двох днів. Сидіть кожен у себе, — нехай сьомого дня не виходить ніхто з свого місця!“
See! The Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day.”
І назвав Ізраїлів дім ім'я́ тому: ма́нна. Вона була́, як коріяндрове насі́ння, біла, а смак її, — як тісто в меду.
Now the house of Israel called its name manna. It was like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.
І сказав Мойсей: „Оце те, що наказав Господь: Напо́вни нею го́мер на схо́вок для ваших поколінь, щоб бачили той хліб, яким Я годував вас на пустині, коли Я виводив вас із єгипетського кра́ю“.
Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Let an omer of it be kept throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’”
І сказав Мойсей до Аарона: „Візьми одну посу́дину, і поклади туди повний го́мер ма́нни, і постав її перед Господнім лицем на схо́вок для ваших поколінь“.
And Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar, and put an omer of manna in it, and place it before the Lord to be kept throughout your generations.”
І як наказав Бог Мойсею, так поставив її Аарон перед ковчегом свідоцтва на сховок.
As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the testimony to be kept.
А Ізраїлеві сини їли ту манну сорок літ, аж до прибуття́ їх до краю заселеного, їли манну аж до прихо́ду їх до границі ханаанського кра́ю.
The people of Israel ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land. They ate the manna till they came to the border of the land of Canaan.
