Exodus 17

І рушила вся громада Ізраїлевих синів із пустині Сін на похо́ди свої з нака́зу Господнього, і ота́борилася в Рефідімі. І не було води пити наро́дові.

Water from the Rock

Then all the congregation of the children of Israel set out on their journey from the Wilderness of Sin, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to drink.

І сварився наро́д із Мойсеєм, і казали вони: „Дайте нам води, і ми бу́демо пити!“ А Мойсей їм сказав: „Чого ви сваритеся зо мною? Нащо випробо́вуєте Господа?“

Therefore the people contended with Moses, and said, “Give us water, that we may drink.”
So Moses said to them, “Why do you contend with me? Why do you tempt the Lord?”

І наро́д був там спраглий води. І ре́мствував наро́д на Мойсея й говорив: „На́що це ти ви́провадив нас із Єгипту? Щоб повбивати спраглого мене та синів моїх, та ота́ри мої?“

And the people thirsted there for water, and the people complained against Moses, and said, “Why is it you have brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”

І кли́кав Мойсей до Господа, кажучи: „Що я вчиню́ цьому наро́дові? Ще трохи, — і вони вкамену́ють мене!“

So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone[a] me!”

І сказав Господь до Мойсея: „Перейдися перед наро́дом, і візьми з собою декого з старши́х Ізраїлевих, а па́лицю, що нею ти вдарив був Річку, візьми в свою руку, та й іди!

And the Lord said to Moses, “Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go.

Ось Я стану перед лицем твоїм там, на скелі в Хориві, а ти вдариш у скелю, — і вийде із неї вода, і буде пити наро́д!“ І зробив Мойсей так на оча́х старши́х Ізраїлевих.

Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.”
And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

І назвав він ім'я́ того місця: Масса́ та Мери́ва через колотнечу Ізраїлевих синів і через ви́пробування ними Господа, коли казали: „Чи є Господь серед нас, чи нема?“

So he called the name of the place Massah[b] and [c]Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they [d]tempted the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

І прибув Амали́к, і воював з Ізра́їлем у Рефідімі.

Victory over the Amalekites

Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

І сказав Мойсей до Ісуса: „Вибери нам людей, і вийди, воюй з Амали́ком. Узавтра я стану на верхі́в'ї гори, а Божа па́лиця буде в моїй руці“.

And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.”

І зробив Ісус, як сказав йому́ Мойсей, щоб воювати з Амали́ком. А Мойсей, Аарон та Хур вийшли на верхі́в'я гори.

So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

І сталося, коли Мойсей підіймав свої руки, то перемага́в Ізра́їль, а коли руки його опускались, то перемагав Амали́к.

And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

А ру́ки Мойсеєві стали тяжкі. І взяли́ вони ка́меня, і поклали під ним. І сів він на ньому, а Аарон та Хур підтримували ру́ки йому, один із цього боку, а один із того. І були його руки ста́лі аж до за́ходу сонця.

But Moses’ hands became [e]heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

І переміг Ісус Амали́ка й народ його ві́стрям меча́.

So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

І сказав Господь до Мойсея: „Напиши це на пам'ятку в книзі, і поклади до вух Ісусових, що докра́ю зітру Я па́м'ять Амали́кову з-під неба.“

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.”

І збудував Мойсей же́ртівника, і назвав ім'я́ йому: Єгова-Ніссі.

And Moses built an altar and called its name, [f]The-Lord-Is-My-Banner;

І проказав він: „Бо рука на Господньому пра́порі: Господе́ві війна з Амали́ком із роду в рід!“

for he said, “Because [g]the Lord has sworn: the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
