І почув Їтро́, жрець мідіянський, Мойсеїв тесть, усе, що́ зробив був Бог для Мойсея та для Свого наро́ду Ізра́їлевого, що вивів Господь Ізраїля з Єгипту.
Jethro Visits Moses
Now Jethro, the priest of Midian and father-in-law of Moses, heard of everything God had done for Moses and for his people Israel, and how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.

І взяв Їтро, Мойсеїв тесть, жінку Мойсеєву Ціппору, по відісла́нні її,
After Moses had sent away his wife Zipporah, his father-in-law Jethro received her
та обох синів її, що ймення одному Ґершом, бо сказав був: „Я став прихо́дьком у чужому краї“,
а ймення другому Еліезер, бо „Бог мого батька був мені по́міччю, і визволив мене від фараонового меча“.
І прибув Їтро, тесть Мойсеів, і сини його та жінка його до Мойсея в пустиню, де він ота́борився там біля Божої гори.
Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, together with Moses’ sons and wife, came to him in the wilderness, where he was camped near the mountain of God.
І сказав він до Мойсея: „Я, тесть твій Їтро, прихо́джу до тебе, і жінка твоя, і оби́два сини її з нею“.
Jethro had sent word to him, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons.”
І вийшов Мойсей навпроти свого тестя, та й уклонився до землі, і поцілував його. І питали вони один о́дного про мир, і ввійшли до намету.
So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent.
І оповів Мойсей своєму те́стеві про все, що́ зробив був Господь фараонові та Єгиптові через Ізраїля, про всі ті труднощі, які він спіткав був по дорозі, та Господь визволив їх.
Moses told his father-in-law about everything the Lord had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel’s sake and about all the hardships they had met along the way and how the Lord had saved them.
І тішився Їтро всім тим добром, що вчинив Господь для Ізраїля, що визволив його з єгипетської руки.
Jethro was delighted to hear about all the good things the Lord had done for Israel in rescuing them from the hand of the Egyptians.
І промовив Їтро: „Благослове́нний Господь, що ви́зволив вас з єгипетської руки та з руки фараонової, що визволив народ з-під руки єгипетської.
He said, “Praise be to the Lord, who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from the hand of the Egyptians.
Тепер я знаю, що Господь більший за всіх богів, бо зробив це за те, що єги́птяни вихваля́лись над ними“.
Now I know that the Lord is greater than all other gods, for he did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly.”
І взяв Їтро, Мойсеїв тесть, цілопа́лення та жертви для Бога. І прийшов Аарон та всі старші́ Ізраїлеві їсти хліб з Мойсеєвим тестем перед Божим обличчям.
Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Moses’ father-in-law in the presence of God.
I сталося назавтра, і сів Мойсей судити народ, а народ стояв навколо Мойсея від ра́нку аж до ве́чора.
The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening.
І побачив тесть Мойсеїв усе, що́ він робить наро́дові, та й сказав: „Що́ це за річ, що ти робиш народові? Для чо́го ти сидиш сам один, а ввесь народ стоїть навколо від ранку аж до вечора?“
When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, “What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?”
А Мойсей відказав своєму те́стеві: „Бо народ приходить до мене питатися су́ду Бога.
Moses answered him, “Because the people come to me to seek God’s will.
Бо як мають вони справу, то приходять до мене, і я суджу́ поміж тим і тим, та оголошую постанови Божі та зако́ни Його“.
Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God’s decrees and instructions.”
І сказав тесть Мойсеїв до нього: „Недобра ця річ, що ти чиниш.
Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good.
Справді сто́мишся і ти, і народ той, що з тобою, бо ця справа тяжча за тебе. Не потра́пиш ти чинити її сам один!
You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.
Тепер послухай мого слова, пораджу тобі, — і буде Бог із тобою! Стій за народ перед Богом, і принось справи до Бога.
Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him.
І ти остереже́ш їх за постанови та за зако́ни, і об'я́виш їм ту путь, якою вони підуть, і те діло, яке вони зроблять.
Teach them his decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave.
А ти на́здриш зо всього народу мужів здібних, богобоязли́вих, мужів справедливих, що нена́видять зиск, і настано́виш їх над ними тисяцькими, сотниками, п'ятдесятниками та десятниками.
But select capable men from all the people — men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain — and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
І будуть вони судити народ кожного ча́су. І станеться, — кожну велику справу вони принесуть до тебе, а кожну малу справу — розсудять самі. Полегши́ собі, і нехай вони несуть тягар із тобою.
Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you.
Коли ти зробиш цю річ, а Бог тобі накаже, то ти втримаєшся, а також увесь народ цей при́йде на своє місце в мирі“.
If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.”
І послухався Мойсей голосу тестя свого, і зробив усе, що́ той був сказав.
Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said.
І вибрав Мойсей здібних мужів зо всього Ізраїля, і настанови́в їх начальниками над народом, — тисяцькими, сотниками, п'ятдесятниками та десятниками.
He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
І судили вони народ кожного ча́су. Справу трудну приносили Мойсеєві, а кожну малу справу — судили самі.
They served as judges for the people at all times. The difficult cases they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves.
