Слава Божа — щоб справу схова́ти, а слава царів — щоб розві́дати справу.
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; but the glory of kings is to search out a thing.
Небо висо́кістю, і земля глибино́ю, і серце царі́в — недосліди́мі.
The heavens for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.
Як відкинути жу́жель від срі́бла, то золотаре́ві виходить посу́дина, —
Take away the dross from the silver, and there cometh forth a vessel for the refiner:
коли віддалити безбожного з-перед обличчя царе́вого, то справедливістю міцно поста́виться трон його.
take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.
Перед царем не пиша́йся, а на місці великих не стій,
Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of the great;
бо ліпше, як скажуть тобі: „Ходи вище сюди!“ аніж тебе зни́зити перед шляхе́тним, що бачили очі твої.
for better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither, than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes see.
Не спіши́ся ставати до по́зову, бо що́ будеш робити в кінці його, як тебе засоро́мить твій ближній?
Go not forth hastily to strive, lest [thou know not] what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.
Судися за сварку свою з своїм ближнім, але не виявляй таємни́ці іншого,
Debate thy cause with thy neighbour, but reveal not the secret of another;
щоб тебе не обра́зив, хто слухати буде, і щоб не вернулась на тебе обмо́ва твоя́.
lest he that heareth [it] disgrace thee, and thine evil report turn not away.
Золоті яблука на срібнім таре́лі — це слово, прока́зане ча́су свого́.
[As] apples of gold in pictures of silver, is a word spoken in season.
Золотая сере́жка й оздоба зо щи́рого золота — це мудрий карта́ч для уважного уха.
An ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, is a wise reprover upon an attentive ear.
Немов снігова́ прохоло́да в день жнив — посол вірний для тих, хто його посилає, і він душу пана свого оживля́є.
As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, [so] is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.
Хмари та вітер, а немає дощу це люди́на, що чва́ниться да́ром, та його не дає.
Clouds and wind without rain, [so] is a man that boasteth himself of a false gift.
Воло́дар зм'я́кшується терпели́вістю, а м'яке́нький язик ломить кістку.
By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
Якщо мед ти знайшов, то спожий, скільки до́сить тобі, щоб ним не переси́титися та не звернути.
Hast thou found honey? Eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be surfeited therewith, and vomit it.
Здержуй но́гу свою від дому твого товариша, щоб тобою він не переси́тивсь, і не зненави́дів тебе.
Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbour's house; lest he be weary of thee and hate thee.
Молот, і меч, і гостра стріла́ — люди́на, що говорить на ближнього свого, як свідок брехливий.
A maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow, is a man that beareth false witness against his neighbour.
Гнилий зуб та кульга́ва нога — це наді́я на зрадли́вого радника в день твого у́тиску.
A broken tooth, and a tottering foot, is confidence in an unfaithful [man] in the day of trouble.
Що здіймати одежу холодного дня, що лити о́цет на со́ду, — це — співати пісні серцю засмученому.
[As] he that taketh off a garment in cold weather, [and as] vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to a sad heart.
Якщо голодує твій ворог — нагодуй його хлібом, а як спра́гнений він — водою напі́й ти його,
If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
бо цим пригорта́єш ти жар на його го́лову, і Господь надолу́жить тобі!
for thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and Jehovah shall reward thee.
Вітер північний народжує дощ, а таємний язик — сердите обличчя.
The north wind bringeth forth rain, and the angry countenance a backbiting tongue.
Ліпше жити в куті́ на даху́, ніж з сварливою жінкою в спільному домі.
It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a contentious woman, and a house in common.
Добра звістка з далекого кра́ю — це холодна водиця на спра́гнену душу.
[As] cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.
Джерело́ скаламу́чене чи зіпсутий поті́к — це праведний, що схиляється перед безбожним.
A troubled fountain, and a defiled well, is a righteous [man] that giveth way before the wicked.
Їсти меду багато — не добре, так досліджувати власну славу — неслава.
It is not good to eat much honey; and to search into weighty matters is [itself] a weight.
