Бо ду́маю, що немудріший за кожного я, і не маю я лю́дського розуму,
Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man.
і не навчився я мудрости, і не знаю пізна́ння святих....
I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.
Хто на небо ввійшов — і зійшов? Хто у жме́ні Свої зібрав вітер? Хто воду в одежу зв'язав? Хто поставив усі кі́нці землі? Яке Йме́ння Його, і яке Йме́ння Сина Його, коли знаєш?
Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?
Кожне Боже слово очи́щене, щит Він для тих, хто в Нім пристановище має.
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
До слів Його не додавай, щоб тебе не скартав Він, і щоб неправдомо́вцем не став ти.
Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
Двох речей я від Тебе просив, — не відмов мені, поки помру́:
Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:
віддали́ Ти від мене марно́ту та слово брехли́ве, убо́зтва й багатства мені не давай! Годуй мене хлібом, для ме́не призна́ченим,
Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:
щоб я не переси́тився та й не відрікся, і не сказав: „Хто Госпо́дь?“ і щоб я не збіднів і не крав, і не знева́жив Ім'я́ мого Бога.
Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.
Раба не обмовля́й перед паном його, щоб тебе не прокляв він, і ти винуватим не став.
Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty.
Оце поколі́ння, що батька свого проклинає, і не́ньки своєї не благословляє,
There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.
покоління, що чисте в оча́х своїх, та від бруду свого не обмите,
There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.
покоління, — які го́рдісні очі його, а пові́ки його як підне́слися!
There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.
Покоління, що в нього мечі — його зуби, а гострі ножі — його ще́лепи, щоб поже́рти убогих із кра́ю й нужде́нних з землі!
There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.
Дві дочки́ в кровоже́рця: „Дай, дай!“ Оці три не наси́тяться, чотири не скажуть „до́сить":
The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:
шео́л та утро́ба неплідна, водою земля не наси́титься, і не скаже „до́сить“ огонь!
The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.
Око, що з батька сміється й пого́рджує по́слухом матері, — нехай ви́дзьобають його кру́ки пото́чні, і нехай орленя́та його пожеру́ть!
The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.
Три речі оці дивови́жні для мене, і чотири, яких я не знаю:
There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not:
дорога орли́на в повітрі, дорога змії́на на скелі, корабельна дорога в сере́дині моря, і дорога мужчи́ни при дівчині!..
The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.
Така ось дорога блудли́вої жінки: наїлась та витерла уста свої й повіла́: „Не вчинила я злого!“
Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.
Трясе́ться земля під трьома, і під чотирма́, яких зне́сти не може вона:
For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:
під рабом, коли він зацарю́є, і під нерозумним, як хліба наїсться,
For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with meat;
під розпу́стницею, коли взята за жінку, і неві́льницею, коли вижене пані свою́!..
For an odious woman when she is married; and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress.
Оці ось чотири малі на землі, та вони ве́льми мудрі:
There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:
мура́шки, — не сильний наро́д, та пожи́ву свою загото́влюють літом;
The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer;
борсуки́, — люд не сильний, та в скелі свій дім вони ставлять;
The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;
немає царя в сарани́, — але вся вона в стро́ї бойо́вім вихо́дить;
The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;
паву́к тільки ла́пками пнеться, та він і в пала́тах царськи́х!
The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces.
Добре ступають ці троє, і добре хо́дять чотири:
There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going:
лев, найсильніший поміж звірино́ю, який не вступа́ється ні перед ким,
A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any;
осі́дланий кінь, і козел, та той цар, що з ним ві́йсько!
A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.
Якщо ти допусти́вся глупо́ти пихою, й якщо заміря́єш лихе, — то руку на уста!
If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth.
