Наймарні́ша марно́та, сказав Пропові́дник, наймарні́ша марно́та, — марно́та усе!
Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
Яка ко́ристь люди́ні в усім її тру́ді, який вона робить під сонцем?
What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
Поколі́ння відхо́дить, й поколі́ння приходить, а земля вікові́чно стоїть!
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
І со́нечко схо́дить, і сонце заходить, і поспішає до місця свого́, де схо́дить воно.
The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
Віє вітер на пі́вдень, і на північ верта́ється, кру́титься, крутиться він та й іде, і на круг свій верта́ється вітер.
The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
Всі пото́ки до моря пливуть, але море — воно не напо́внюється: до місця, ізві́дки пливуть, ті потоки вони поверта́ються, щоб зно́ву плисти́!
All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
Повні тру́ду всі ре́чі, — люди́на сказати всього́ не потра́пить! Не наси́титься ба́ченням око, і не напо́вниться слу́ханням ухо.
All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
Що було́, воно й бу́де, і що робилося, бу́де робитись воно, — і немає нічо́го ново́го під сонцем!
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
Буває таке, що про нього говорять: „Дивись, — це нове́!“ Та воно вже було́ від вікі́в, що були́ перед нами!
Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
Нема згадки про перше, а тако́ж про насту́пне, що бу́де, — про них згадки не бу́де між тими, що бу́дуть пото́му.
There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.
Я, Проповідник, був царем над Ізраїлем в Єрусалимі.
With Wisdom Comes Sorrow

І поклав я на серце своє, щоб шукати й дослі́джувати мудрістю все, що робилось під небом. Це праця тяжка́, яку дав Бог для лю́дських синів, щоб мозо́литись нею.
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
Я бачив усі справи, що чини́лись під сонцем: й ось усе це — марно́та та ло́влення вітру!
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
Покри́вленого не напра́виш, а неісну́ючого не полі́чиш!
That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
Говорив я був з серцем своїм та казав: Ось я велику премудрість набув, Найбільшу за всіх, що до ме́не над Єрусалимом були́. І бачило серце моє всяку мудрість і знання.
I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
І поклав я на серце своє, щоб пізнати премудрість, і пізнати безу́мство й глупо́ту, — і збагну́в я, що й це все — то ло́влення вітру!
And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
