A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left.
Коли нерозумний і прямою дорогою йде, йому серця бракує, і всім він говорить, що він нерозумний.
Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.
Коли гнів володаря стане на тебе, не лишай свого місця, — бо лагі́дність доводить до про́щення навіть великих провин.
If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.
Є зло, що я бачив під сонцем, мов по́милка, що повстає від володаря:
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:
на великих висо́тах глупо́та буває поста́влена, а багаті сидять у низині́!
Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
Я бачив на ко́нях рабів, князі́ ж пішки ходили, немов ті раби.
I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
Хто яму копає, той в неї впаде́, а хто валить мура, того га́дина вкусить.
He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
Хто зно́сить камі́ння, пора́ниться ним; хто дро́ва рубає, загро́жений ними.
Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.
Як залізо ступіє, й хтось ле́за не ви́гострить, той мусить напру́жити свою силу, — та мудрість зара́дить йому!
If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.
Коли вкусить гадюка перед закля́ттям, тоді ворожби́т не потрібний.
Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
Слова́ з уст премудрого — милість, а губи безумного нищать його:
The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
поча́ток слів його уст — глупо́та, а кінець його уст — зле шале́нство.
The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.
Нерозумний говорить багато, та не знає люди́на, що́ буде; а що буде по ньому, хто скаже йому?
A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
Втомляє безумного праця його, бо не знає й дороги до міста.
The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
Горе, кра́ю, тобі, коли цар твій — хлопчи́на, а влади́ки твої спозара́нку їдять!
Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
Щасливий ти, кра́ю, коли син шляхе́тних у тебе царем, а влади́ки твої своєча́сно їдять, як ті му́жі, а не як п'яни́ці!
Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
Від лі́нощів ва́литься стеля, а з опу́щення рук тече дах.
By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
Гости́ну справляють для радощів, і вином весели́ться життя, а за срі́бло все це можна мати.
A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.
Навіть у ду́мці своїй не злосло́в на царя, і в спа́льні своїй не кляни багача́, — небесний бо птах віднесе́ твою мову, а крила́тий розкаже про слово твоє.
Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
