Ecclesiastes 3

Для всього свій час, і година своя́ кожній справі під небом:

Everything Has Its Time

To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven:

час роди́тись і час помирати, час садити і час виривати поса́джене,

A time [a]to be born,
And a time to die;
A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted;

час вбивати і час лікувати, час руйнувати і час будувати,

A time to kill,
And a time to heal;
A time to break down,
And a time to build up;

час плакати й час регота́ти, час ридати і час танцювати,

A time to weep,
And a time to laugh;
A time to mourn,
And a time to dance;

час розкида́ти каміння і час каміння грома́дити, час обіймати і час ухилятись обі́ймів,

A time to cast away stones,
And a time to gather stones;
A time to embrace,
And a time to refrain from embracing;

час шукати і час розгубити, час збирати і час розкида́ти,

A time to gain,
And a time to lose;
A time to keep,
And a time to throw away;

час дерти і час зашивати, час мовчати і час говорити,

A time to tear,
And a time to sew;
A time to keep silence,
And a time to speak;

час кохати і час ненави́діти, час війні і час миру!

A time to love,
And a time to hate;
A time of war,
And a time of peace.

Яка ко́ристь трудя́щому в тім, над чим тру́диться він?

The God-Given Task

What profit has the worker from that in which he labors?

Я бачив роботу, що Бог був дав лю́дським синам, щоб труди́лись над нею,

I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied.

— усе Він прега́рним зробив свого ча́су, і вічність поклав їм у серце, хоч не розуміє люди́на тих діл, що Бог учинив, від поча́тку та аж до кінця́.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.

Я знаю, немає нічо́го в них кращого, як тільки радіти й робити добро́ у своєму житті.

I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives,

I отож, як котри́й чоловік їсть та п'є і в усім своїм тру́ді радіє добром, — це дар Божий!

and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor — it is the gift of God.

Я знаю, що все, що Бог робить, воно зостається навіки, — до того не можна нічого додати, — і з того не можна нічого відня́ти, і Бог так зробив, щоб боялись Його!

I know that whatever God does,
It shall be forever.
Nothing can be added to it,
And nothing taken from it.
God does it, that men should fear before Him.

Що є, то було́ вже воно, і що статися має — було вже, бо минуле відно́влює Бог!

That which is has already been,
And what is to be has already been;
And God [b]requires an account of [c]what is past.

І я бачив під сонцем іще: місце су́ду, — а в нім беззако́ння, і місце правди, — у ньому ж неправда.

Injustice Seems to Prevail

Moreover I saw under the sun:
In the place of [d]judgment,
Wickedness was there;
And in the place of righteousness,
[e]Iniquity was there.

Я сказав був у серці своє́му: Судитиме Бог справедливого й несправедливого, бо для кожної справи є час, і на всяке там ді́ло.

I said in my heart,
“God shall judge the righteous and the wicked,
For there is a time there for every [f]purpose and for every work.”

Я сказав був у серці своє́му: Це для лю́дських синів, щоб Бог випробо́вував їх, і щоб бачити їм, що вони як ті зві́рі,

I said in my heart, “Concerning the condition of the sons of men, God tests them, that they may see that they themselves are like animals.”

бо доля для лю́дських синів і доля звіри́ни — однакова доля для них: як оці помирають, так само вмирають і ті, і для всіх один по́дих, і нема над твариною ви́щости людям, — марно́та бо все!

For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals; one thing befalls them: as one dies, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over animals, for all is vanity.

Все до місця одно́го йде: все постало із по́роху, і ве́рнеться все знов до пороху.

All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to dust.

Хто те знає, чи дух лю́дських синів підійма́ється вго́ру, і чи спуска́ється вділ до землі дух скотини?

Who[g] knows the spirit of the sons of men, which goes upward, and the spirit of the animal, which goes down to the earth?

І я бачив, — нема чоловікові кращого, як діла́ми своїми радіти, бо це доля його́! Бо хто поведе́ його гля́нути, що́ буде по ньому?

So I perceived that nothing is better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for that is his [h]heritage. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?
